How did the gears look? Especially on the motor. Any odd sounds while it is moving, and can you move the gears freely manually w/out the motor in there?
Just trying to determine whether the gearing is the issue or the motor.

You'll probably have to take out the entire assembly, face box and all, something is still gunked up and keeping it from moving without friction, probably residual black grease that fell in somewhere you just happened to miss unfortunately, It should move fairly easily by hand without the motor in place. I had the same issue with the one I shopped out.
