Quoted from Bradp56:

I am still having the issue with the ball falling off the castle lock ramp. I am going to continue to adjust it to get it right. Its better but still not perfect. Also sometimes the coffin lock ramp the ball will rattle at the top of the ramp and come back down. I am still adjusting that.

I bent a small amount of metal wire (kind of like the wire you'd use to make your own gate) and attached on end under the switch mounting screw near that bend and the other end nearby so it basically made a little barrier to keep the ball on the wireform. When I have a chance and I'm at home I will try and take a photo of it. You don't even notice it on the game and ever since I did that I have never had a single ball fall off again.

Here's a photo. It's a little bit of piano wire I looped between the screw on the switch of one ramp to the wireform on the adjacent one.

The game shipped and was designed to have white rubber. Red flipper bats (full sized) with black flipper rubbers.

I believe all they came with is a single pop cover.

This is true, just the one.

Protos had green targets. Those got replaced with yellow for production but the manuals were already printed at the time. I used to have both a proto and a production game and my proto had the green targets (it also had some insert differences).

Quoted from ModCity:

Ah, interesting to know. Yellow works for me, but would have considered green if they were readily available. This shop job is complicated enough as it is, I don't need the manual throwing curve balls at me too!
I'm assuming most would encourage me to remove the mylar around the pop bumpers. It's the only mylar on the machine and I understand you don't really need it with Diamondplate playfields. There is some bubbling by a few of the inserts leading into the Mystery Hole. I've never removed mylar before. Is it worth it?

You do still need it with diamondplate playfields. The force of that ring smashing the ball into the playfield will wear the clear coating and paint off it eventually. Leave the mylar on there unless it is really crappy then I'd remove it and replace with new mylar.

Quoted from aobrien5:

The castle opto's are the ones on the wireform where the Castle Lock balls sit. All three of them being out sounds like a wiring issue. Make sure they're plugged in. I'm not sure which is the opto TL popper, but that's most likely your rats hole or the return from the mystery hole.
If you don't see a wiring problem, point your cell phone camera at the opto led in the white housing for whatever you can access. If the transmitter is working, you'll be able to see the purple light in your camera.

I think it means TOP LEFT popper - the one on the left side below the left ramp. I forget if they call it the celler but it is where Renfield says "master you promised me eternal life" when the ball goes in there.

Bryan are you needing a set to use to create reproduction plastics from?

#1045 10 years ago

Mine are metal and I too have never seen wood ones for that game.

There was never a red display in BSD where the actual display was red. They used the exact same DMD they did in every other game. The red was achieved with coloring of the speaker panel in front of the DMD.

Quoted from achtungboyy:

My buddy opened a barcade and wants me to put my BSD in for October to do a Halloween thing. I love BSD but the lightning flippers mke it really frustrating and almost no fun at times. Do you guys think I should out standard flippers on it while on route so people will not get so frustrated and actually play it?

Throw those stupid lightning flippers in the trash and put regular flippers on there like the designer intended for the game. Everyone will like it better.

Quoted from SSrig:

just pulled glass out and was setting it on floor between pins like we have all done a ton of times. My floor is tile, I guess I will put down a towel from now on

This is exactly why you should NEVER NEVER EVER set tempered glass on a tile or concrete floor. I have a scrap piece of carpet I keep in my basement for setting the glass on. I learned this the hard way when I was working at WMS and blew up a piece of glass on one of our test games. That's when one of my co-workers told me never to set glass on the tile floors or concrete because that will happen.

You'll find glass in that game for years. I broke a glass on my BSD probably 15 years ago and ended up doing a PF swap because it got scratched up from the glass. It was amazing how little pieces were hiding everywhere above and below the playfield when I was stripping it down to do the swap.

Quoted from aobrien5:

MXV would be the one to answer about the programmer leaving, but there are issues that were never fixed. There is just the one release version of software - L1.

Pfutz left the company to go work for Capcom as soon as he finished working on the game (he actually stayed longer than the others so he could complete the game). Doubtful the "known issues" were known at the time and since the game wasn't a big hit for the company (thanks lightning flippers for making an already hard game even harder, thus completely killing the game for any casual/novice player), if the issues became known back then they likely wouldn't have cared unless the operators started bitching (and they didn't). The company had moved onto the next pair of games coming out and were also trying to sue everyone who quit to go to Capcom.

Quoted from Crash:

A lot of confusion over these lightning flippers. Many people say a French operator with heavy influence in the market suggested they be installed to improve revenue by shortening ball times. I agree the game must not have been designed with these in mind, as it's much more enjoyable and shots are more satisfying/more consistent. But nobody has concrete evidence to prove one theory over another that I know of.

I worked there and can and have verified this and told the story numerous times over the years. It was a French distributor/operator though, not just an operator. He put them on all the games over there. He talked sales/marketing here to do it for a while and the games that were victims of them mostly suffered for it (Dr. Who, BSD, Fish Tales, though Fish Tales still earned well and sold well).

Dracula was supposed to have full sized, blood red flippers and was designed around them. It was changed when the game hit the line to those stupid lightning flippers which made an already hard game even harder and it earned less, not more. The manual even has the blood red flippers listed in the parts list as they never changed the manuals since they were already printed at that point.

Quoted from barakandl:

Put the game on tournament mode. It makes the random awards static. I havent seen it award an extra ball from it on tournament mode, if it does, it doesnt do it until a large number of mysteries awards.

It actually doesn't work on this game. The random point awards will still always be random.
