Quoted from dudah:

Good to hear the standard flipper love. A couple years ago it was very biased for the lightning bats.
I asked Barry Oursler at Expo 2 years ago if BSD was supposed to have normal flippers and he said yes. It was a distributor that wanted lightning flippers for faster games so mgmt made the call.
The geometry is designed around standard flippers, so that’s what I use. Planetary has plenty of “blood red” bats that I imagine were made for BSD.

I had always heard that Fish Tales and Dracula get Lightning Flippers, but I looked in the manuals and I couldn‘t find where it actually says that. I looked in a few manuals for the part number, but it‘s not real helpful on this point - 20-9250-4 (BSD), 20-9250-5 (WH2O), 20-9250-6 (TAF and FT). I got my BSD with the lightning flippers in it. It had been nicely restored. My FT had normal size (although oddly one had the image of a lightning bolt on top) - I have since put in 2 new lightning flippers. I think the number at the end (4, 5 or 6) has to do with the color of the flipper and not the size.

my BSD has some incandescents and some LEDs, which is the way I got it and I always thought it looked pretty good so I never changed it. It has some weird bluish incandescents in the slings and lower GI which look really good, but I‘m not sure if I can replace them (I should probably look for some spares).

In general, though, I think LEDs are pretty awesome, especially in inserts and backboxes - especially for real backboxes for which I figure heat damage could be an issue. My experience has not been, however, that LEDs are more reliable than incandescents - I‘ve had a lot of LEDs which failed - which is irritating as they‘re not cheap. I‘ve found, though, that new incandescents are of poorer quality and not as bright as the old ones - which I would not have if I hadn‘t swapped them out for LEDs.

Quoted from PinRetail:

But the designers implemented a 'zero cross circuit'.

a-ha - thank you, I‘ve wondered about the purpose of the zero cross circuits.
If I could, I’d like to pick your brain about another zero cross circuit. The 5V DC supply circuit (with the LM323) also uses such a circuit (with the LM339). I‘m guessing this circuit has a somewhat different purpose since several of the inputs are DC or at least do not have the negative half of the sine wave (after the diodes D3 and D38). I‘m also guessing its purpose is to further stabilize the 5DC supply to protect the digital circuits, but I‘m not really clear how it does this. What‘s your take on this circuit?
