Mine is not the same but similar and better cast
New to the club as of yesterday, and I have a couple easy questions for the veterans.
Mine came with a coffin mod, seems to be called "crate" mod, when I search for it. The instructions I had were that it just sits in place, which doesn't seem right. Basically there's a 3 light board that's just sitting in place, not screwed down, and this thing sitting on top of that, not screwed to anything. That doesn't seem right. Is this mod missing bits?
Also, the Rat scoop. I hate that I can't see it to aim for it. Does any mod / rework exist for the castle bits that obscure that scoop? Would prefer to see the things I'm aiming for.
The light board comes out and the coffin mod sits on top. It’s not screwed down or anything. It’s not going anywhere.
You’ll get used to hitting the rat hole in time .

Ok thanks for the confirmation!

Correct! I miss worded my post. Just wanted to put the comparison out there. Can’t wait to get mine. Looks fantastic!

I received my Coffin Mod by RudeDogg1 today and installed it. First I wanted to say that the quality is fantastic. I’m really impressed with how great it looks.
Install was a bit of a pain, not because of the mod, but more just because of how the old screws were and getting to some of them. Past that, the new parts were easy to assemble.
Highly recommend this. It’s worth every penny.
Bonus, also replaced the old apron cards with new ones here from Upkick Pinball. Also, very nice quality.

Just joined the club... loving it so far. Can't believe how much more difficult this machine is compared to any other I've spent significant time on. The left ramp shot is remarkably difficult to hit consistently even though you'd never guess that by looking at it. I'm getting my ass kicked but I can't seem to stop playing, it's a bit of a problem haha.
Anybody have any tips for adjusting the rules to enhance the gameplay? I read the thokennedy rules tweak and was curious if anyone else had suggestions on top of his. I very much enjoy trying to make my games as balanced and fair as possible and not just sticking with the factory settings if there are improvements out there

I drooped my flippers down a bit. This makes it easier to hit the left and right shots and consistently making ramps.
We have lightning flippers on ours. Played one with regular flippers, and was surprised how much of a difference it seemed to make. Now I’m thinking of switching mine (at least for a while).
What is general opinion? Are the Lightning’s and quicker ball times part of what makes BSD great? Is it a mistake to make the game ‘easier’?
Quoted from curban:Are the Lightning’s and quicker ball times part of what makes BSD great? Is it a mistake to make the game ‘easier’?
Obviously, making a choice like this is completely subjective. Do whatever you want to your game that makes it more enjoyable to you. Personally, I like the game set up to be tough as nails. It's not a deep game by any measure, and I think If I'm able to consistently set up all 3 multiballs, its a lot less exciting in the long run. The lightning flippers do a good job at keeping me right at the precipice of doing well and poorly. Since I'm not paying money to play, and I can start as many (frustrating) games as I want, I like it set to brutal difficulty.

Ya I would also like to get others take on this, I know its subjective and matters on skills as well...but I find that the slingshots and outlanes are the main drains for me, but would like to hear how different flippers improved shot making and how that adjusted overall game play.
I'm having an issue with the mist multiball lock randomly releasing balls during gameplay (it only does this when the ball is behind the upper right gate) and give me a free extra ball in play. It will release the ball into play and then immediately plunge and lock another ball behind the mist gate. It doesn't happen during mist multiball it just happens randomly. Mist multiball plays fine too. I tested the magnet in the test menu and it didn't seem to have any errors. Has anyone dealt with a similar problem that they were able to resolve? I looked through the forums and couldn't find anything about this problem

Sounds like you have an intermittent problem with the optos, which is hard to detect in switch test. Replace the optos in both gates.

Off top of my head, I’m guessing we get to doubles MBs ~25% of games and triple MBs ~10% of games on ours with lightnings. The game we played on location: I got double MBs both games and saw my wife playing and getting some 30Ms (which seldomly happens for her on ours). Maybe the game was also otherwise setup easier.
Quoted from curban:What is general opinion? Are the Lightning’s and quicker ball times part of what makes BSD great? Is it a mistake to make the game ‘easier’?
I personally feel some games from the WPC era benefit from the slight added challenge of lightning flippers. BSD and Fish Tales are the two I prefer lightning flippers on. Dr. who also, when I had one. Nothing at all wrong with full size flippers on those pins. Totally your preference. I have only played with lightning flippers on BSD, so it’s all I know. I can string left and right ramp shots together pretty easily now, 3,4,5 in a row consistently. I get coffin and mist mb on most games, and I get all 3 probably almost half the time. It’s a blast getting those 30 million jackpots, and hitting coffin to stab Drac with a stake through the heart. Pinsound really ramps up the audio during mb too. Pretty intense!
Suddenly started to get "opto interference"; if I run the magnet test it's triggering on all the opto checks.
What is the likely cause? All my lamps are incandescent if that matters.
I replaced the inductor and caps on the 24 opto board last year when I rebuilt this BSD and it has been solid since. Just suddenly started occurring.

Optos can have intermittent failure. I would replace the optos in both gates.

Put regular flippers on and see what you think. Simple job to change back. Mine currently has full red flippers on it as the designer intended - definitely makes the game easier.

Mine is on default I believe. First round is a gimme. Second round requires attention. Third round is frantic. Fourth round is insane. Never tried further than that. What does the difficult setting change?

Speeds it up at least by a round. You need to be on your toes for round one. They come at you pretty fast. Try it, I had mine on standard for years. Really glad I found out about the harder setting.
I decided to redo my BSD with all blue posts and bumpers. I rebuilt the pops entirely with new translucent skirts, tops and bodies.

I had good luck removing my STTNG’s factory Mylar.. so I did it to my BSD…. Came out perfect!!! Zero damage, didn’t lose any art, didn’t pull up any ink.
It was a huge space… the cleanup is almost harder than the removal process… BUT! I soaked a paper towel in 90% alcohol… left it over the spot for about 10 mins.. and it wiped up extremely easy.. took maybe 25 minutes total time from removing Mylar to completion.

Yes! Exactly.

Replaced the receiver and it’s still occurring. Replaced the transmitter, seems fixed! Interesting, would have figured it was the receiver at fault.
Spoke too soon, opto 2 test still failing. I’ll try a new 24 opto board to see if that changes anything.
Finished for now

I'm sure people here can appreciate the pain of being f#%!ed by the magnet when trying to start Mist multiball. A very, very fine example happened yesterday during one of the final matches in the Norwegian Championships finals:

Ahhh, the ol’ transfer…. I’ve lost many multi balls due to that lol.
My fave is when the mist ball and the ball in play get stuck together and slowly the mist ball drags your ball across the playfield.
Quoted from GoodManners:My fave is when the mist ball and the ball in play get stuck together and slowly the mist ball drags your ball across the playfield.
This happens to me at least every third game.... maybe I need to check how magnetized the balls themselves are.
I had some transfers on mist ball and double balls where it drags the 2nd ball across the playfield. I replaced the balls with some oh so shiny balls and it hasn’t happened since.
The most insulting pinball moment is when you hit the mist multiball into the orbit and start the videomode, while the magnet grabs the other ball.

I need to do mine also. Iv had it over a yr now and it needs a good cleaning. It also has incandescent bulbs that need to go.
Quoted from RGarriott:I need to do mine also. Iv had it over a yr now and it needs a good cleaning. It also has incandescent bulbs that need to go.
The most important bulb to change your to an LED is the one that runs underneath the big Left ramp… If it’s on long enough.. Heat from the bulb will create a tiny bubble on your ramp making a little speed bump.. Mine had it when I got it 12 years ago… I’ve since then flattened it using a heat gun and a flat leveling tool.
Quoted from Luke_Nukem:I’ve since then flattened it using a heat gun and a flat leveling tool.
Good idea. This happens on Scared Stiff’s left ramp also. Get those hot bulbs away from the plastic. I hadn’t considered a heat gun to gently flatten it down. Instead I sold that Scared Stiff and bought another with a pristine ramp. This is much simpler.

Sorry these are no longer available for now.

Spoke too soon, opto 2 test still failing. I’ll try a new 24 opto board to see if that changes anything.
So several things. Close look at my 24 opto board shows signs of corrosion from leaked electrolyte. I was naive enough when I replaced the caps and inductor to not observe this -- bought a Homepin replacement board, as the corrosion is pretty pervasive.
Also, it does seem that the left-side receiver opto is getting interference from the bulb that sits about 2" below it. There are two of the black plastic housings stacked to protect the LED but they don't sit tightly together. I may just run some black electrical tape along the seam to try to more effectively block light leaking in (or just remove the bulb).
In the switch levels test, I can see the opto fluttering like crazy, if I block up the side of the housings with my hand or a piece of cardboard it stops (or remove that close bulb).

So I cut my own holes in the village building to allow light to pass through.. ran a 4 inch warm white led strip inside of the body.. wired in my own 555 lamp socket that I mounted using an existing screw and positioned it to where it bled through where the “windows” now were. The graveyard once removed off the big ramp.. and yes you have to actually remove the big ramp entirely to access the bottom of it.. it has an inch hole where I ran an 8 inch LED strip inside and tapped off a nearby GI lug under the playfield. I’ve ran many strips and 8SMD pads through out the game and I just tap into nearby GI using alligator clips under the playfield (I used to solder, but the clips make removing for maintenance / cleaning SOOO much easier. I got my blue and purple bumper bodies and tops from pinball life.. they have them in translucent.. I found translucent skirts from Pinballmods.com Pinside user ZITT is the owner.. he is heavily invested in the STTNG club page and only carrier of translucent skirts anywhere. For lighting the speaker panel I used a 20 inch led strip (same size for lighting the back top of the playfield.. and tapped off one 555 socket in the back box.
