Those that have seen some of my post recently probably will notice that I've been debating on restoring my playfield. I failed in finding someone to do this for me so I've turned my thought to trying to create an overlay. I think someone else may be working on something like this as well but I wanted to see if I could do it. I've got a lot of clean-up work to do and (hopefully) it will line up correctly but I wanted to share what I have so far.

Figured worst case scenario is I fail with making an overlay but at least I could share it with a co-builder for use in a VP table update.

I've never tired this before so I could be way off. I also have no clue what to print it on (if I get it finished) or how to get it printed. If I get that far I'll try to find a trashed playfied to test things with (if you have one let me know please).

Let me know what you think. I'm amateur at best with photoshop so you wont hurt my feelings.

Have you tried using a company like Gameongrafix? I don't know if they can do overlays, but I have used them for large scale printing for MAME marquees, front of the machine art, and even custom art for pinball machines body/head.The biggest problem I see would be all the clear parts needed for the lights. I know they do have a custom artist on hand, he should be able to answer your questions better than I can. Their company link is http://www.gameongrafix.com/index.php if you are interested.

My company can do the overlay printing, whether that be vinyl or mylar. Send me a PM if interested.

Thanks for the info.

PinsideMike - My thought is to leave the places where the insert will be seen blank. This means I'll have to either find someone that can print white (I don't think that's a huge problem with a pro print shop) or I would have to cut out the parts around the inserts (major PITA). My thought is to have one sheet for the playfield and then another separate one for the insert lettering. If I can get this right I'll actually make two different one of the lettering as I'm debating on doing the stock inserts or maybe going with insert lettering that matches BOP 2.0.

JK2171 - I'll be in touch assuming I can get this to work artistically. I'm really concerned about getting it to line up correctly. My thought for install would be to sand the playfield smooth, clear coat it, apply the first overlay, clear it again, apply the insert letters and then clear over that. Since I want to clear coat over the overlay I'm guessing it will have to be vinyl but you would know best. I'm hoping that by doing it this way (following LTD's guide for waterslide decals) that it will help prevent bubbling and will allow it to play better.

I would suggest getting it printed on clear and have the text for the inserts. All one overlay. You don't want to be laying overlays on top of overlays.

Yes, I agree. We could print on clear vinyl, and put down white first where there are colored areas so the colors come out perfect. The clear areas would be for over inserts.

Repro playfields are well down the road - playfields routed, inserts, done, and artwork finished. Going to silkscreen soon.

I would agree about upcoming repros. The new 2.0 mod will give BOP some heat. Need plastics too!

Best news Ive heard in years. Last time I saw the project looked stalled indefinitely because of talks of copy-write issues and another company that had bought out the rights a few years ago or something...

With BoP 2.0 coming out just around the corner, looks like she is going to be getting a serious makeover in 2014!

That is great news! Is there a pre-order list we can get on, Rick?

#12 9 years ago

Total thread derailment time, but there just so happens to be a NoS BoP plastic set on Ebay at the moment as well. ebay.com link: Nos Bride Of Pinbot Pinball Machine Plastic Set Williams
One of the repro companies should totally buy this to speed up production on all the soon to be needed plastic sets *cough cough wink wink*.

#13 9 years ago

I will check with the supplier and get an update hopefully tonite or tomorrow. Additionally I'll put a pre-reserve item on our site and post here when I do that.

#14 9 years ago

BOP plastics are already in the queue ... two different suppliers but we try to coordinate getting plastics and playfields in similar timeframes ...

We'll heck. This just makes my day too and will put this project on hold. I gave up on repo BOP playfields too as it seemed like it's been stalled out for years now. What are the chances of these being ready by the end of Feb? My goal was to restore my BOP in time for the 2.0 kit to come in and take it to the Texas pinball festival to get some attention to the new rules and allow everyone to play it.

I'd very much like to be put on a pre-order list as well.

#16 9 years ago

Rick you just made my day with that news! I've been in need of a new BOP playfield for years now and I will place an order the minute you make it available! (Ditto for plastics too)

#17 9 years ago

Does PPS sell individual plastics or do you need to buy the full set? I just need 3 plastics.

Sets...

#19 9 years ago

Yes, I know I'm being impatient but Rick, did you hear anything about the BOP playfields

#20 9 years ago

yes I could use a new playfield too. I would like to get on a pre-order list. Hopefully full payment won't be till after the holidays cause I'm tapped.

Just bumping to see if Rick has had any luck getting a timeline from the vendor on the new playfields. I don't want to spend the couple hundred hours it will take to finish this unless those playfields wont happen.

Rick - Any news

Me too...been checking the Planetary site as well, and nothing so far. In the interim I tore down the top side of BOP yesterday, and giving my playfield a good cleaning, etc.

#24 9 years ago

I hope they aren't yanking our chain. Really surprised we haven't heard anything back so hoping that is not a sign that it may be on the backburner. With MMr I'm assuming anything other than that is low priority right now which is understandable.

I'm pretty sure CPR has the artwork as I thought I saw a thread a year or 2 ago where they got burnt on it. Something about the license getting pulled after they started work on it. I could be starting rumors though as I can't remember 100% but I thought it was on their roadmap long ago.

Would be really cool if whomever does this give an option to go with the proto inserts. I just saw some pics of one and I actually thought it was pretty neat looking.

With that all said.... I'm still slowly making progress on the overlay. I've got the base put together and am working on the detail work (cleaning up all the lines). It is a major PITA so I hope CPR or PP come to the rescue with a repo playfield sometime in the near future.

#25 9 years ago

85vett....let me know when you have that overlay done. I'd be happy to print a sample to see how it comes out for n/c. My playfield is missing some of the art around the pop bumpers so not a great candidate to try and scan.

#26 9 years ago

Just to let you guys know that this can be done and turn out very nice. I did this exact thing on a Strikes and Spares restoration: http://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/strikes-and-spares-restoration

Just a quick progress update on this. I've spent most of my time at her legs on the center section. I'm already seeing several things I'll have to redo as the lines are crappy. This is MUCH harder than I thought it would be BOP overlay update.jpg

This looks great, I need an overlay, or parts of an overlay to fix my BOP.
Whats the status?

If it's not going anywhere, would it be possible to share the above file uncompressed?

Thanks!

#31 8 years ago

i too need an overlay

#32 8 years ago

sorry, overlays of WMS games are not allowed per wms, and hence we cannot even do them (as well as we are required to notify wms of anyone who is), for some reason years ago the legal people at wms put their foot down on overlays and still maintain that position ...

#33 8 years ago

ok? so if I print one myself for my machine WMS is going to come after me?

#34 8 years ago

if you make the artwork yourself and print one yourself no issue. If you get the artwork from someone else or anyone makes copies for other people that is an issue.

Rick...can you provide us with an update on the BOP repro playfields? You had said that you were going to check, and possibly post a link on the Planetary website for pre-reserves/interest.

so if I right click that image above and click "save target as" I am going to jail?

make some playfields and it wont be an issue

Just got off the phone with Peter in Germany ... playfields are being milled in the next week or so, as they are waiting for diamond bits. All the inserts are made and waiting to be glued in, and then the films are done for the playfield. So, he is thinking they will be doing the wood starting this week, probably about 5 weeks before they can start screening the playfields.

If you print one for yourself and don't sell any, WMS is never going to even know.

Oh I hope this is true...I have been stalling putting my BoP back together in hopes of a repro playfield. This would be glorious!

#41 8 years ago

thats great news ! will order one asap ! rick... hearing that pps will carry 2.0 ? also ,great to hear about funhouse 2.0 and hoping youll have totan as well.

#42 8 years ago

we will carry some for sure ...

#43 8 years ago

Rick - You mentioned about being able to preorder. Any update on that?

#44 8 years ago

I actually put this on the back burner being all the talk about repo's coming. Needed to have a plan B for if they don't come so I still play around with it every now and then.

Would be nice if the PF's come about the same time as 2.0.

Can not wait. My bop resto has been on hold for a year plus. All done minus playfield

you have no idea how much I hope that's true... I emailed them a couple years ago to get on their list and had pretty much lost hope by now

How do you get on the list? I cannot miss this.

I've been on the waiting list too. I talked to him about a year ago and it seemed like it was getting close. I thought at the time he said that Bay Area Amusements would be selling them in the US, but maybe that's changed.

Giving up on the repo playfield since they were "going to silkscreaning" 9 months ago and apparently nothing is coming from it so far. Checked on some restoration possibilities and they just aren't cost effective for my current PF so am firing this back up. Hopefully a repo happens soon otherwise I'm just going to go with this and save some $$$.

Here's a low res version of what I've got now. Test printing my Batman PF so focusing on this. With some luck I may be able to redo both at the same time

Let me know what you think. I need to do some more clean up work (mainly the hearts), add the missing astronauts, and try to start making sure the inserts line up.
