I am not sure if this has ever been covered, but why aren't books seen as potential themes? If you go back about 100 years everything would be in the public domain. Even if it was just authors....

a few examples off the top of my head..

    Pit and the Pendulum
    King Solomon Mines
Treasure Island (although close to POTC)
    Sherlock Holmes
    The Odyssey
Journey to the Center of the Earth (or just about anything by Verne)

They would require music, callouts and animations... but these have to be better than just another 70s rock band.

    .....

    Library of Alexandria

*edit* Go steampunk with that, future post-apocalyptic, collect the great pieces of lost literature.

A steampunk theme, in general, would be pretty awesome.

Mad magazine themed pin could work

    #8 57 days ago

My thought was that it could be something in the public domain. Something that people already know, but wouldn’t require a license.

    #9 57 days ago

The Iliad and the Odyssey, technically a poem, but a lot of material there, Trojan war artwork

    #10 57 days ago

    The Bible

    Quoted from NC_Pin:

    Pit and the Pendulum

First thing I thought of. A good Poe work.

If you want a live action show to work from, the librarians and warehouse 13 were sprinkled with literary and historical references.

So many great Poe works to chose from. I'd think "The Conqueror Worm" too.

Someone could probably make an entire theme just based on the works of Poe.

    Tropic of Cancer

Great idea, though I'd lean towards the more obscure titles. Like "The Cask of Amontillado".

Though hitting the start button with no credits and the Raven quoting, "Never More". Would be great.

I would be in on a Poe pin! Or the Odyssey. Damn this is new territory!

    Soundtrack!

Data East started developing one but it never got past whitewood phase. It was going to have an Alfred E. Newman head like Rudy in Funhouse.

Poe is a great idea. Didn't Spinball make a Jules Verne pin?

    #22 57 days ago

Tough to think of a book that hasn't been made into a movie that would work. Poe stuff could be awesome though.

    Verne's World...

    Moby Dick.
Ball times would have to be long though.

    #24 57 days ago

A Dante's Inferno pin could be awesome. A mode for each of the 9 rings and then fight Satan in the wizard mode.

Or Dante's Peak, to stand alongside the likes of twister, whirlwind, and earthshaker

    I didn't know that existed!

I think they could have had a movie - the game would just be based on the book. That would keep all of the IP in the public domain

    #27 57 days ago

    Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde
War of the Worlds (although that is pretty much AFM)
    Adventures of Tom Sawyer
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe

    #28 57 days ago

Judge Dredd is actually based off of the comic books/graphic novels (not the movie).

Also many pinball themes that are movies originated as novels.
Examples Jurassic Park (Michael Crichton), Congo (also Michael Crichton), The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings (J. R. R. Tolkien) etc. etc.

    #29 57 days ago

Put all of Stephens Kings books into a pin and I would but it.

The difference is that all of those required a license.... and most were based of the movie and not the books (although JP2 is really not based off of either).

I think Lovecraft is largely/entirely in the public domain. Weren't there some renders of a very cool, but wildly impractical cabinet design for a Cthulhu pin floating around a few years back? What ever became of that project?

Wow. Lovecraft and Zappa in one post.. the mind reels! Awesome.

I was working on a pin based on the works of Poe , but it has been sidelined for a while . The Raven , Black Cat , pit and the pendulum, tell tale heart , masque of red death . Could be really cool if done right . Wish I had more time for this project.

    Robin Hood
    Peter Pan
    Tarzan
    Legend of Sleepy Hollow
    Grimm's Fairy Tales

Sounds cool. I always wanted Grimm Brothers and Dark Tower. Harry Potter also seems obvious.

Kind of crappy pictures , but I was going for the classic stenciled cabinet . Cabinet was basically done but playfield was/is in very early stage of development . And again I do want to get back to this at some point but I am completely buried in pinball work .

I definitely agree that Harry Potter and Stephen King are no brainers.

My original thought was that someone could have a killer theme, but have no licensing costs ( or approvals!) That is why I was originally attracted to Poe, Verne, and etc. However, there are tons of possibilities public domain or otherwise. Just a thought in how to add some variety.

    Amazing.

    #50 57 days ago

I believe Poe's work is public domain at this point and could be a great choice for theme . I really hope some company makes it so I don't have to . Making pinball is extremely difficult .
