Why would people want to point out anything?
Anyone on PinSide who disagrees is clearly wrong.

#21 7 years ago

Scary isn't it?
People with knowledge (including development and industry professionals) and long time collectors stopped trying to answer.
Others simply never started because it seemed overly wasteful.

New hobbyists have the answers.
Old hobbyists that started "all the way back in 2010" have the answers.

The reality could be simple, but people already know guidance from others.

Tastes initially great, or less filling with each iteration...but sometimes there is an unpleasant bitterness afterwards.

Never forget the direct definition of a pinball machine:

A moderately expensive wood box with electronic components and wiring designed to provide entertainment and artwork based on a single theme using a metal ball.

If an owner expects a game to do "magic", that is up to the designer, and what a potential owner really believes can be accomplished based on experience, and not a requirement for a manufacturer to live up to those same expectations whatever they might be.

I will share that code will not fix recycled game designs that were moderately mediocre from 2008.

So let's look at this from the perspective of this direct thread for a moment.

I post a direct assessment of the unwillingness for experienced people to provide honest feedback on this website because they end up getting personally attacked and new owners have all the answers which is being echoed well beyond the walls of these forums, which is not just my opinion, and am pleasantly provided this return comment:

"Go back to RGP you crotchety old $#!@."

I really don't care, but as Bill Engvall would say, "Here's your sign."

Tell us what our motivation is again?

We want to help, but some don't want to listen.

Right now for example, DP is a history lesson being relearned in 2017 by new potential owners (and the manufacturer) that did not witness the financial and production problems that occurred with Retro Pinball LLC in 2010, long before the adventures of Zidware and Skit-B, or even first game of JJP (who unfortunately repeatedly some of the same mistakes as well). Not much mention, I can recall recently, but some did actual try in the past.

Wheels of the bus go round and round.

Quoted from Cheese_WizardPQ:

What are all these possibilities that Lyman is suppose to add with the huge mech?
These game changers?
It spins. Left or right.

Not revolutionary, not innovative, did not provide more options.

"Sit right back, and hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip..."

Gilligan's Island (BLY, 1991) used the same type of mech much better, 26 years ago.
SAME TYPE of nostalgic licensed theme.
Hand drawn artwork by John Youssi.
Outstanding sound from the original cast (no Jack Backus, ie Mr. Howell).
Very good music from the series, and designed by John Hey (BoP, Earthshaker, Funhouse, Doctor Who, etc).

Code is complete and solid, game is very fun, shots are smoother, everything works as it should.

Every BM66 enthusiast should try one, discover what you missed out on.
Search it out.
Used game costs under $3K.
Fully restored game is higher due to some hard to find NOS parts.

There is some beneficial pinball knowledge, whether "young" or "old", 5 or 50.

"Don't drive yourself insane, on the limited edition hype train."

Quoted from Mike_J:

I've never seen anything in a Stern game that looks as well built or polished.

Is this an evaluation 18 years at modern Stern (1999) and approaching 100 production titles (every single different version)? This does NOT mention a single game prior to this period either from Data East, or Sam Stern.

I must have seriously missed something when the ball kept getting stuck behind the rotating assembly when I played the the three LE versions locally, and they were well maintained on routes and I know two out of the three owners.

I give credit to Stern in this area to their production record.
There are quite a few nice LEs in the recent decade since 2010 with good to superb artwork, solid rulesets, added features, and mirrored backglasses to choose from overall.

Mr. Sheats, Jr is not responsible for the software programming for first two of the current "Top 5" modern Stern games since 1999, which seems to be overlooked.
Mr. Sheats has done less than half the games for Stern since return to pinball in 2005.

These specific titles are TSPP (2003) and LOTR (2004), both of which were software designed by Keith Johnson and Dwight Sullivan.

Mr. Sheats, Jr contributions are extremely notable, but he was taught by many people that no one seems to mention when he was signed on as an apprentice at WMS in the mid 1990s, and was very fortunate to do so, as he was suggested for employment by one of the people above, namely Dwight Sullivan. His "magic" did not come up out of thin air, in some cases was a multiple contribution effort for titles on the design teams, including code design.

For example much of the initially code efforts ideas for Medieval Madness can be credited to Mr. Eddy, not Mr. Sheats, Jr. For the most parts by the time the game was in full production, code was already completed in early 1997 by the design team.

One of the reasons Mr. Sheats, Jr has remained notable is not only for his contributions and success, but the fact that the industry does not support large volumes of programmers, companies do not employee them, and older program designers are not interested in returning for a number of reasons.
When Mr. Sheats, Jr develops designs for new games, he contacts his former WMS employees for advice, which adds significant benefit to games.
