The cap was probably installed backwards, reversed polarity. When this happens, everything seems normal, then you begin to hear a sizzle, then the cap explodes spewing insulator and electrolyte. Clean off the board with iso alcohol or Castrol super clean to make sure the electrolyte is removed. It is conductive and can cause other issues.

How long does it take an electrolytic cap to explode? That is dependent on the voltage applied, capacitance and size of the cap.

No it was a brand new capacitor I replaced. Not sure what happened??? Hoping I can find another one today?

Quoted from RocketFromTombs:

That's a normal failure mode for tantalum capacitors. When they get old, they tend to explode. You SHOULD be good to just replace the cap and go on with life.
EDIT: Oh wait, now I see that it wasn't one of the tantalums that exploded... i guess you can disregard my advice, heh...

Put a new capacitor in and it works, but still gets super scratchy. Do I just pull and replace all related caps at this point?

Sure, spend the money at this point.
