RESOLVED!!!!i installed the driver/MPU combo board I got from rottendog and it works great!! I decided not to hook up the knocker as I don’t want to chance another $245 mistake. I am curious as to what went wrong. The pic below is what it looked like when I hooked it up. It’s also possible that I created a bridge on accident when I was soldering the t120 or 2N4401 transistors. I’d appreciate any feedback though.

Otherwise thanks everyone!! I learned a lot from this experience. my first pin

Which side of that coil has the banded side of the diode? The dual wire connector should be on that side.

Is the banded side the side in the right in the pic? The end of the diode with the metal?

Thanks!

Yes, but it's probably just marked on the end with a band of ink rather than a metal band.

Thanks! Given I blew up my old transistor board by hooking it up wrong, I’m worried I might have damaged the diode or coil during that process. I’m tempted to replace the SG-23 850 and diode with a new one. There only 10.99 online. I’ll grab a new one and post back with an update.

Damaging the coil is unlikely (they can pretty much only be damaged by heat from locking on for extended periods), the diode is very likely. Just clip it off and put a new one on.

Thanks, I just ordered the 1N4004 transistor linked above. I’ll pop it in and post back with an update.

I linked to a diode, not a transistor. And it's a random diode so you could compare the "band" to the one you have. It may not be the correct one for your coil, I haven't checked.

It'll work, they should work for pretty much all coils and switches. Only come across one machine (Gamatron) that doesn't use them

Thanks!

Based on those 2 pictures, you had the wires reversed on that coil. Connecting it up that way basically makes the diode a dead short to the driver transistor which will blow a transistor in a heartbeat.

The diode could have survived but no way to tell without testing it. Better just to replace it like the others have suggested.

Also, if you haven't ordered already, get 10 or 20 of them. They are used all over pinball machines.

Why is your coil sleeve sticking out so far in post 51?

Thanks I ordered a bunch.

I think it’s because I had it upside down. I’ll make sure it fits back into place.

Thanks and I’ll post with update after I get the parts in the mail and put them in.
