“Condition Red!”
“Condition Green!”
“Condition Yellow!”
...“BLACKOUT!!!”

Very cool theme, fun callouts, good art package, great sound effects, good backglass, great light show integrated with the theme, good rule set. Fantastic layout with three spinners, two drop banks, and two 'side-lanes.'

I started up a Blackout Club so that proud Blackout owners can share their love for the machine as well as: repair help, restoration tips, part requests, requesting wiring photos, topper ideas, best LED usage, color matching tips, and upgrade ideas...

I'm looking forward to seeing a new examples of Blackout in action -- who can put together a new HD vid on youtube?

Who can post a movie of the gameplay this weekend? It would be nice to see the action on a well-cared for Blackout...

Quoted from Lysurgeon:

When I do make the shot, it drains SDTM about 50 percent of the time.

Bummer! I wonder what are some ways to get around this. Does the ball interact with the right wall at all? Can you fatten the final rubber so that the ball always pops off that wall like on Diner or, like what I did on my Sorcerer?

Curious, did you ever shoot top right spinner? If not why not? Trying to learn the rules, goals...

WTB- Looking for some displays for my machine. If you have any pm details. Looking for two score displays and credit displays.

You might also want to cross post in the bally club thread.

Quoted from swillie:

When you clear the yellow target bank twice, the right spinner lanes light (red arrows) and value increases to 1000 points per spin, makes a cool sound as it takes it's time adding those spinner points once you hit it.

Wait, you can light spinners in Blackout? Why don't we see you going for that in the video? I don't think you shot at either right spinner.

Quoted from swillie:

Hitting the yellow bank 3 times lights blackout and once collected it remains lit for multiple chances at it until the ball drains. Another reason why it is important to get that right flipper working strong.

multiple chances at what?
are you saying you can't earn "Blackout" until you earn yellow 3x? I thought you just had to earn green 1x, red 1x, yellow 1x, then hit the eject hole.

That was a really enjoyable vid. Really appreciate it.

Can I ask why you never shot for the near right side lane -- is there no specific rule for it? Is it the "appendix" of the game?

Quoted from Lysurgeon:

I, personally, never shoot for the right most spinner.

Oh. Snap. What a disappointment to hear. Sounds like Blackout needs a 2.0 rule set something awful!

Quoted from Schwaggs:

What are the correct flipper bat and flipper rubber colors? Mine has yellow bats with yellow rubber but the brochure shows white bats with red rubbers.

I'm gonna have some fun with your question:
"The correct color is the combination that looks best to you."

I have a LOT of fun changing things up to IMPROVE on original design.

I use about 5 considerations when making my choice: A few are:

1. Make sure the rubber color does NOT equal the playfield color nearby -- you want MAX contrast to help the brain improve confidence on trusting you can get a piece of the ball if you flip.
2. Never use the same color rubber as bat. Have some fun with this...
3. Experiment: Keep a lot of combinations on hand in your box, so you can mix and match until you get something you really like.

The other important question to ask about bats/rubbers is:

1. How many color combinations were typical in ~1981?

Two?

White or Yellow bats with red rubbers?

Now there are 100+ combinations possible.
Why on earth limit yourself to 2 from 100 when given the choice.
They limited their options back then due to market or technology reasons, no reason we have to today.

uncle_jose: Cool vid:

1. why no game sound?
2. why no lane change?

Has anyone succeeded in making the saucer output:

1. stronger
2. aim for right flipper better

Right now, mine hits the top of the right sling. I cleaned out the mechs 100% in the ultrasonic. That helped 10% but not enough to get ALL balls to the right flipper.

Still no luck on the saucer eject.

1. The plastic is perfect
2. Everything has been cleaned and adjusted.
3. The arm movement feels great. No resistance.

I suppose the next step is to swap out the coil with another coil. There's a chance the one on there (with no markings) is not the strength expected.

I'm about 15 hours into a shop job on Blackout. (I have not posted a shop job thread on it)

I love the shot geometry of this game.

What has made the biggest difference so far?

1. Adjusting all three of the upper right components to form a straight line for the orbit exit.
2. Adding Cliffy return frames
3. Polishing the mylar with treasure cove's products
4. Adding return springs to the flippers and removing the conical springs
5. Setting 6.5° and play testing to make sure the orbit is makeable on a clean shot

Quoted from gutz:

Wpc style return springs. You will have to change your base plates if stock.

Negative.

The only thing you "have" to do, is remove the old springs, have the component that allows you to connect a new spring to the plunger arm, buy a small spring, and attach it to a frame screw and plunger arm component (don't know the name of that little extension).

So simple.

You can attach it to the plate screw, or insert a shorter hex screw into the pf

I wasn't happy with the power of the blackout saucer, so I took it down from 850 to 750 windings. It's better. I may try 650 another day.
