I'm in! Got tipped off this game was in the back of a bar down the street. Over the course of 6 MONTHS I managed to get a hold of the owner who happened to be interested in selling it! A German reimport but very nice example - clean boards, clean cabinet, very decent playfield. Excited to shop this out!

My cannon has no wear, what's the best way to keep it that way? Mylar? Or just keeping it waxed?

#740 5 years ago

I'm serial number 1965716 with no diamond plate. It's a German reimport if that matters.

#741 5 years ago

Taking apart my game tonight for transport into the basement. Really pleased with how clean it is. I could eat off of the surfaces. Matching serials all around!

My Davey Jones locker rubs against the side. Sometimes it only goes 75% of the way up, other times it will fly up real quick. Guessing a switch isn't registering and maybe the mechanism is messed up. Is this common? My next step is going to disassemble/inspect/clean the whole mech.

#748 5 years ago
Quoted from Puffdanny:

I'm having trouble with my ramp that lifts up over Davey Jones locker.when it goes to raise it's not catching and it repeats a few times then gives up. If I hold the ramp up the mech will catch then hold the ramp or if I put a little pressure at the top or hold my finger above it anywhere so when it kicks up it hits my finger it will catch every time.has anyone else had this problem?I've been fiddling with it for a bit and at my wits end.it happened once before and I couldn't figure it out then it just started working again for 6 months but this time it's being an asshole lol.

I had this issue also.
Take apart the whole thing and clean everything.
There should be no lubricant anywhere.
Replace the coil sleeve.
The arm at the top that does the ramp lifting, I had to stick it towards the outer edge of the groove, not seated all the way in.
All good now!

#752 5 years ago
Quoted from Puffdanny:

I'm assuming you did this from under the playfield?

Yes, I removed the whole assembly from underneath. If you have some small wrenches you may be able to adjust the lifter arm from the top without removing anything.

Quoted from Ericpinballfan:

I know, almost 2 years of promises for a cannon shell and still nothing.

What happened to the guy 3D printing them?

Any tricks to reinforce my currently good one to make sure it lasts?

Marco has one listed here for reference. Definitely has a spring. I don't see why a one way gate with roughly the same dimensions wouldn't work.

Quoted from lanfeust:

After 2 years of search, I finally joined the club!
As I wanted to keep this one, I fully restored it from head to toes. Touched up playfield and clearcoated, not the perfection but much more better than before.

Beautiful! I want to clear coat my game but I have the giant factory mylar installed (also not diamond plate). Does anyone have any success in removing the mylar without any paint?

1 month later
#864 5 years ago

Realized that I only have mylar above the flippers and in the pops. In planning for my teardown and shopout this fall, I'm thinking of clearcoating the playfield.
Mine's not a diamondplate and the mylar is perfect now.
Anyone have luck with BR?

I'm going to convert to LED's.
Who stuck with the red/white double GI style?
It seems like a cool feature, but not sure how it'll look...

1 month later
#887 5 years ago

I also find it strange there's no posts at the top of the ball guide wireform. I do get a fair amount of drains.

#890 5 years ago

Does anyone have a playfield scan?
I'm looking to laser cut my own playfield protector and can reward you with a free one

Quoted from Jon9508:

The canon bodies are pretty rare. There is a nos one on the pinside shops for 250 pounds. I am really surprised no one hasn't 3d printed it yet with all of this talent that people have these days.

I just got access to a very nice 3D printer and am thinking about reproducing it as my next project.

1 week later
#915 5 years ago

This may be a silly question - but do you guys have foam behind your targets?
Every single one of my targets has the foam missing with no evidence it was ever there.
I kinda like it because it makes them super sensitive!

EDIT: Searched this thread to find that there is no foam!

#920 5 years ago
Quoted from TurnedWoods:

3D printing of the Cannon. Two of my mechanical engineers are pinheads and have done some work with 3D printing.

Great to hear. Have you considered making a die and doing injection molding? I don't know much about that but my local hackerspace has a bad ass 5 axis cnc.

Had some extra blue plexi so whipped up a replacement for the top of the Whirlpool ramp. Engraved the whirlpool text on top. I've added a blue LED strip hooked up to the associated flasher. I'm currently shopping mine out, excited to see how it looks lit up. Thoughts?

Looks pretty cool! Are you offering them up for sale?

If I get enough interest I'll do a run.

Here's another photo with that same thin blue LED strip on the side.

#937 5 years ago

Well that's enough interest for me!
I'll be doing a run of my whirpool ramp plastic.
I also created these slingshot protectors if you'd like one or both of these.
I plan to suspend my hackerspace subscription where this laser cutter is at the end of the month, so please PM me if you'd like one. Thanks!

The correct parts are: 12-6971 Gate, 10-434 torsion Spring

Quoted from Ericpinballfan:

Perfect, the ball will move it. Overtime it will loosen up a little. The idea is to grab that ball amd prevent a bounce out.

True! Installed it and did a few tests. Not gonna get super lucky anymore but it's pretty generous.

I also put some dampening foam at the back of the ball guide.

#944 5 years ago

Finished shopping out my game! Totally rebuilt the cannon mechanism. The 2 tone (red/white) GI is VERY cool! The Tilt Graphics blades look great.
My new Whirlpool ramp cover plastic is very cool. Wired a very thin LED strip with the ramp flasher so it lights up everytime you hit the ramp.

Quoted from Pinballerchef:

Mine never makes it up that ramp off the plunge....my flap lifts up on the left side of it so I’m wondering if that’s the cause.
The consensus is that it’s supposed to make the ramp and go up and around.

My Davy Jones ramp wasn't going down all the way. I adjusted the ball guides best I could. Rebuilt and cleaned the mech. Adjusted the post that lifts the ramp. Ended up having to chop off part of the post rubber with a razor blade and haven't had any issues since.

#960 5 years ago
Quoted from Pinballerchef:

What did slicing part of the post rubber off help with ??

I had this problem when i first got this game, and after my shop job. Assuming I bent the metal slightly. Took off the right ball guide on the Davey Jones ramp and bent it so it was straighter. Where the tab to mount to the playfield is, I slightly bent it away from the ramp. This metal bends fairly easy, so be slow and careful. I also gripped the Davey Jones ramp real good and twisted clockwise.
Had to skim off a bit of the post rubber, but now it fits perfectly!

My full power plunge no longer makes it up the Davey Jones ramp, I think I may have to carefully bend the 2 ball guides in the launcher lane.

#967 5 years ago
Quoted from Pinballerchef:

I didn’t say I couldn’t adjust it. It’s very easy. But they don’t give you enough room with the V shape hole to line up multiple positions. No amount of fiddling with it helped center my plunger with the ball....is what it is apparently.

I used to be able to hit the Davey Jones ramp on a full plunge. After shopping my game, it seems the top/right ball guide I bent a little bit and it biffs out. Going to adjust that a bit and dial it in.

#970 5 years ago

I just put my BR back together. I'm getting some air balls off of clean strong hits. Sometimes hits the wireforms and duds out.
Assuming my Whirlpool isn't level?
It feels pretty level, I run my finger along the edge. Still slightly adjusted it and no better.
What am I missing?

#972 5 years ago
Quoted from allsportdvd:

Can anyone photograph or explain how the Davey Jones Locker ramp is supposed to sit?
I reassembled mine and the ramp stays up even when the solenoid fires. I’m not sure how the metal guide underneath is supposed to sit

This switch in the lock section keeps getting pushed to the side causing balls to get stuck and a real pain in my ass.
Straightened it out when I shopped it out recently and it came back, what am I missing?

Imagine a mod where every led is RGB, so that they're all on normally, but turn red during cannon shots. Maybe feed in to pinstadium too...

The effect is very cool even without pinstadium. Stick to the red/white scheme!

Quoted from Ericpinballfan:

Is there a bulb map for the white and red GI?

There's a "R" screenprinted on the playfield next to the red bulb sockets

Quoted from gunstarhero:

Right. Super cool effect for a game of this era!
You can test the various GI strings in the TESTS menu. For the most part the red GI lamps are marked with an R on the PF.
Works fine with LEDs, my game has been converted over and it works like a champ.

+1 for red/white GI!

#1051 4 years ago
Quoted from transprtr4u:

What LEDs are you using? Tested the 2 red bulbs in the slings changing them to LED and I instantly blew fuse 109

Comet 2 smd. Perhaps you shorted something putting them in?

Since shopping my game out, I feel the cannon isn't the same. The cannon lid seems to hit the habitrail. The ball sometimes skips over it. Just re-level? Should I aim more for it being recessed in the playfield versus sticking above it?

How does the "target resets broadside bonus" standup work?
I've noticed that sometimes it helps open the locker.

3 months later
#1232 4 years ago
Quoted from Mancave:

Has anyone had their lift ramp not operate properly, as far as not raising high enough to allow the ball to go under the ramp flap? I've got my machine back together now and have a few teething issues, main one being the lift ramp. I've removed the mech to give it a good clean and it all seems ok visually so not quite sure what's the problem with it

Two things - the ball guide location, and the location of the rod under the lifter ramp.
For the ball guide, check my post here https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/black-rose-club-owners-and-fans-welcome/page/20#post-4806407

For the lifter ramp rod - Take apart the whole thing and clean everything.
There should be no lubricant anywhere.
Replace the coil sleeve.
The arm at the top that does the ramp lifting, I had to stick it towards the outer edge of the groove, not seated all the way in.

#1234 4 years ago
Quoted from antinea:

There's a Black Rose for sale not too far away from me. Since this pin has a couple of unique things, are there parts I should double check when I'll take a look at it?

Inspect the entire cannon mechanism, look for cracks in the housing and ensure it works well
Wear above where it launches is common
Check the Davy Jones ramp lifts by itself and stays up
Otherwise check for errors and do a switch/coil/lamp test

#1246 4 years ago

The horizontal bar that the ramp rests on needs to be higher up, closest to the end where you can secure it.
The arm that it's sitting in, it's currently too recessed.

Okay no need another photo from parrot plastic, just found that part already. Thank you so much again!
If Someone stitch out the machine can do high quality photos from the playfield all area too?

I've looked in the past across the internet and couldn't find it. Your best bet would be to go to VPforums and see if someone posted one as a table building resource, or extract one from a VP game file

Quoted from ElkGrovePinball:

Has anyone experienced the ball hitting the Broadside wireform return and bouncing over the top of the right flipper and draining? Recently, it started happening a lot on my BR. What is the likely cause and solution? Perhaps tweak the ball deflector at the bottom. Thanks.

Make sure game is level and wireform is well secured. After that I would put some dead bounce foam at the bottom where the ball hits.

#1501 3 years ago
Quoted from Riefepeters:

Technical issue needing help!
My game just started having a multiball issue, or I should say a lack of multiball. Here’s what happens:
-lock is enabled
-ball goes into pirates cove to start trigger multiball
-multiball mode and scoring starts, but only with the single ball getting kicked back from the cove
-a second ball is NOT ejected into shooter lane to start
Anyone ever run into this before or have ideas on where to start?!

Go to a switch test and test your trough switches

I'm planning to do this. I also don't like the lack of a rubber on a post either. Thinking of just cutting a small rubber and wrapping it around the wireform.

Quoted from jchybro:

Has anyone had the experience of a shot from a flipper hitting the bottom of the lower wire ramp (whirlpool)? I Can feel it hit and then kills the ball speed enough to not make it up the whirlpool ramp. I have the cliffy cannon protector in place.
I've tried:
moving the rubbers up on the flippers
verified the gap from the flipper bat to the playfield looks good
installed new flipper rubber
verified the overall machine pitch is correct
ensured the cannon is as level and flat as possible
the last thing i may try is to raise the lower wire form with a couple washers as long as it doesn't impact the play.
I'm about to record it in slow motion to see if i can identify where the ball begins to catch air. I was just curious if anyone else has experienced this before i attempt recording. It does not happen all the time but enough to be annoying. I really hope it's not the cliffy.
Thanks!

Make 100% sure that the cannon mech is level with the playfield and that the game is level. Mine was giving me weird random airballs like that that were hard to pin down, releveled everything and it still happens, but much less frequently.

Based on how dirty it is I'd also take apart all the mechs, clean, verify all the correct hardware is in place and redo the coil sleeves.

Just got these art blades and they look really cool online but the color scheme looks a little different did the colors look more muted. Has anyone put these on their machine? Quoted from Ericpinballfan:

You are correct on this information.
It also applies to Fish Tales and BSD.
The European importers wanted the games harder with smaller flipper bats to incourage sales. Thus implying they would make more money.

I confirmed with Barry at Expo a few years ago that BSD was designed with regular flippers in mind (hence the massive surplus of "blood red" flippers) and it was a management decision to go with lightning.

Does any one have an extra wire fourm for the center sword where the ball rolls back to the flippers.
