Wonka! But, practically speaking, there is a $2000 difference between the Knight Premium and the Willy LE. Tough decisions ahead! Playing both at MGC should give me some answers.

You should read that again.

I’m in on a BK LE and will purchase Wonka as well if I like what I see.

Tough to make a call between two games no one has played, but I love the BK play field art so that makes it a buy for me.

#106 4 years ago

I am sorry but Wonka as a theme will never do it for me, even if the game is good the theme would drive me crazy after a while.

I always read how people say this the next big theme whether it is Balck Knight or Wonka this too will pass. The next must have is already being developed- it will never be Wonka for me.

I don’t need JJP family friendly themes either.

#107 4 years ago

I've always liked the Wonka movie but not sure how well it will translate into a pinball game. The music isn't really pinball music.

Black Knight should be great S.Ritchie action, and will be faster and more aggressive. Wonka will be more toy/gadget based I would presume.

But if given unlimited space and money I bet I'd want both.

#108 4 years ago

Watched Willy Wonka last night and couldn't help but to think throughout "This theme is perfect for pinball". It's timeless, funny, wacky and most of all has a ton of cool intricate details that can be incorporated into a pinball machine. JJP will actually put the time into the games code to implement a ton of detail from the movie into the game, a majority of competitor products don't do that.

Several of the music tracks are perfect for pinball and there will likely be multiple custom tracks created for the game that have a pinball twist to them. JJP will also likely create several variants of tracks based on the songs they have licensed. Since David Thiel is now over at Deep Root I wouldn't be surprised if its announced Friday at MGC that Chris Granner (LOTR, WOZ) came back to work on Wonk's audio.

Tons of cool possibilities for toys from the the chocolate factory itself, to the boat, the Wonkavator, Wonka Vision, etc. Most of all the theme has a ton of unique detais relating to the theme that can be incorporated into a pinball machine. Implementing reward systems for collecting say Wonka letters, everlasting gobstoppers, and or golden tickets for attempting as well as beating modes sounds like a ton of fun.

Not timeless - seriously - it will not relate to many people, it is not a contemporary movie to many people. Unlicensed themes like BW games created their own appeal by gameplay mostly and the following came later. A strong theme helps sales only for a while but just like WOZ a classic movie it is not a must have for many. It would be like saying Gone with the Wind would make a great pinball theme / game. Or a Christmas Story all old movies that some people relate to but many do not.

It’s a family friendly theme right for JJP but that does not make for a HUGE market necessarily, I hope it is a good game and fun. But, people pushing that everyone will want this and it is a great theme is opinion and if it appeals to you buy it after you play it yourself.

I think we can all agree on one thing. Hyping your game up by involving people that are fans of pinball and active in the pinball community is a much better marketing strategy then announcing a game on IGN! Know your audience.

I released my spot for Black Knight LE, the more I thought about it the more I thought the value was not there and it was not going to hold it’s value so I knocked it down to a premium putting that extra saved money toward Wonka.

#118 4 years ago

I was considering either a BKSR prem or a Wonka. After watching the BKSR stream I’m likely going Wonka LE. Still need to see the JJP Wonka stream, but found BKSR a bit underwhelming and repetitive... I have limited space, so it’s important that my first nib have some staying power.

Yeah after watching the stream, I was left very underwhelmed. The shots and modes look boring and repetitive and I'm not a big fan of metal but that's just me.

#120 4 years ago

I wish Pin2K was still a produced platform. A Firepower III on that could be something amazing . The playfield is a perfect size for a Firepower-themed game ... the video overlays would make it incredible . I'm sure its out there in some alternate universe .

I was leaning towards Wonka before the stream and now moreso. Still need to see what Wonka is like of course.

Quoted from Budman:

but if “ The Candy Man “ song is anywhere in that pin,it just might kill a purchase. That has to being the top five worst songs ever written.

It's a bad song, but it certainly brings back good memories if you were a Pittsburgh Pirates fan back in the 70s and John Candalaria was pitching (I was 6 when they last won a World Series, but I equate that song (and others) with the last time the Pirates actually mattered ).

#124 4 years ago

I was leaning towards BK before and after the stream. I only wait for reports from people who played it and than I think I am in for a Prem.

#125 4 years ago

Have rewatched the BK promo and now think it needs to be a lot better than the BK 2000 I have to rush out and order.

Mate said if similar sell the BK 2000 buy the new one for the new factor and similar game, and go buy the Wonka or other new game out there.

O the pain of not having space or deep pockets.

#126 4 years ago

I was expecting an 8 for BK SoR but after watching stream I’d say a solid 7 maybe 6.5. The animations are cool, I love the retro late 90s graphical look, but the gameplay looks like it gets repetitive quickly. The music also got too repetitive but maybe it’s because I don’t care for metal much. Shots look tight as they get a lot of drains you can’t save from bricking shots.

BK3 looks fun based on the stream. Stern has improved their animation work and BK3 is offering some of Stern's best animation work to date. However, I'm just not seeing $7500 - $9k worth of game on the upper models and there's a severe lack of variety with its ruleset. There's 5 main modes and a final mode. That's just not enough in my opinion at today's prices. I think twice that number is where my expectations are at in 2019 as well as some type of hook to keep people playing like a reward system (Gift of the Elves, SIM cards, etc) as well as multiple wizard modes. Something about the gameplay also just feels off to me and I think it has to due with the lack of a return from a habit rail / ramp to the left flipper.

Hopefully Wonka has a Prominant mode for the weird chocolate river boat trip. Amazing.

There *has* to be. When I first heard rumors of the pin, my first thought was the light show in the chocolate river mode .

I'm trying to figure out how fizzy lifting drinks are going to be involved ... magnets would be too "easy"

This is basically the same criticism most people have for BK2K.....repetitive.

I'd say that's a given these days for just about any LE but yeah, especially the Black Knight.

The animations are great.

Wonka is going to put BK to shame.

You like the animations? I dunno Iceman, it doesn't look right, it looks like Final Fantasy to me. I think they got these young guys doing animation that probably got their chops designing video games. Pinball animation should look more like an expanded DMD graphics in my opinion. Did you see the way the knights move back and forth as if waiting for a joystick input like in a video game? It doesn't click with me.

I thought the Aristocrat video animators did this game too? I was trying to find something i liked about it.

I think that LCD is here to stay - even if MBr did an amazing job with the dots upgrade. I think Stern is getting better - and will continue to get better. But I think the LCD is just the evolution of the DMD. For better or worse.

What about black wonka or willie of rage??

#140 4 years ago

To be honest, I don't think little 19 inch TVs need to be standard going forward. Innovations on the playfield and even the elimination of the backbox will be true steps forward. Backbox: do we need it? I think they should move more towards that Carvin/Kiesel style of CNC basics with wide customization.

^^Agreed.

BK3's animations remind me of those of IMDN - and I didn't care for those, either. These could indeed be Stern's best LCD animations to date, but they still look cheap and generally lacking. I would take MET's or TWD's DMD animations over these any day, but I have never been a console gamer, so I don't really appreciate this style of animation. It doesn't help that the imagery we see is largely devoted to the monster modes. I mean, c'mon, Hell Hand? Sand Worm? Hydra? These are some hokey, Godzilla-movie charicatures of monsters and none has a place in any Black Knight mythology I know. For me, more Medieval imagery would have been better.

Absolutely, that's why I made the comment about them being video game designers, This animation could have been great if they designed it all to be like the ball lock animation, not the weird trippy hand and sand monsters. The problem is (I'm guessing) the programmers are coming up with the art design themselves, and that is never good. You need to get a creative supervisor that comes up with the look and then have the programmers design his vision. Also some of the stuff on the game just doesn't make sense...the Hydra monsters head gets cut off and there is an animation showing the heads flying off but then it cuts to the next screen that shows all of them are still flailing in the air...? Then there is the weird mechanical knights and robots...WTF? They must've been high when they designed that stuff.
I've said this before they need to take a page from Spooky's ACNC animation....it's very fitting for pinball.

Spooky killed it with ACNC animation, i totally agree.

This game is def IMDN ish on animation.

#145 4 years ago

After watching the BKSR stream wow couldn’t be anymore disappointed. Animations and characters are terrible really a hand monster and sand worm sorry IMDN is way better. Instead of the animations adding to the game and what’s on the play field Stern trys to tell the story only on the screen which creates sparse play fields. BKSR seemed more like a Star Wars remake than anything else. I am a big fan of the Black Knight pins my first pin was a Black Knight. On a scale of 1-10 before the stream I was looking forward to playing BKSR a 10 after the stream about a 6. Well we’ll see Friday at MGC.

#146 4 years ago

We’re in for a Wonka CE (which we *really* think of as one of our “dream” themes),but I really look forward to playing BKSoR on location. I don’t have any nostalgia for the previous BK games, otherwise we’d be in on this one for sure.

#147 4 years ago

My thoughts...

Good then a but....
Animations not what I was expecting. Very theme dark.
Gameplay, fast but better then black knight 2000, Im not so sure.
The music, liked for 5 minutes, then thought repetitive and sounds to alike.
Pro looked good and did not seem to miss much compared to the prem.

Will wait to play, and certainly waiting to see Jersey s pin.
The candyman can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good!

#148 4 years ago

I really wanted to like this game. Even contemplated ordering an LE at one stage. Glad I waited to watch the stream. Really dislike the direction the theme was taken with the sandworms and hand monsters. Black Knight to me was always a medieval theme, not a sci-fi theme.

The on-screen graphics killed it for me instantly. Not that you play the screen, but the theme shift just doesn't cut it. Was really looking forward to a modern BK, unfortunately this isn't for me. Shame as the team seem to have put in a huge effort. Perhaps a creative designer would have help steer this game a different way, maybe not, we will never know, it is what it is.

Let's see what JJP & Lawlor bring with Wonka later in the week.
