I just picked up a pretty beat up BK as a project and I need some boardfs. Anyone got any extra power supplies, driver boards and displays that work and want to sell them to me?

#112 5 years ago
Quoted from Patofnaud:

For the displays, you may be better off just buying new LED ones. Do you at least have the cables?
For the power supply, is your big transformer in the head (System 6 supply with no GI relay on it) or is it down in the cabinet (system 7 supply with GI relay)?

i gotta take a look to answer these questions. thanks man I will get back to you.

anyone have a rotisserie they want to sell?

Quoted from Patofnaud:

Ok then you need the top power supply pictured here. Same as my BK.
http://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Williams_System_3_-_7#Power_Supplies
You can buy an XPin or Rottendog replacement for about $110.
http://xpinpinball.com/products/xpin_power_supplies/XP-WMS8345
http://rottendog.us/WPS346.html
And a new replacement driver board that is pin compatible with that MPU for $199
http://www.pinballpcb.com/System3-7DriverBoard.html
Or a rebuilt original.
Let me look, I may have an original one and a driver board. ( I know I have them, just not sure if I have any rebuilt). I'll drop you a PM if I do.

awesome man. let me know on the boards. also in looking at my mpu would you take the chance that it might work and get the 199.00 board knowing that if the mpu doesnt work and I cant fix it it's gonna cost another 199 or would you buy the rottendog for 290 and be done with it?

Quoted from SilverUnicorn:

The Rottendog board certainly has some advantages, but please note:
1) Mine had messed up speech. In attract mode, it does not "laugh" after saying "The Black Knight will slay you!", and during game play, after ball 3 is over, you only get a bit of speech and then the background noise plays for like 5-6 seconds
2) On mine, and i have heard of others who had this issue, sometimes it does not register all the balls. This seems like a switch matrix issue, but the problem, at least for me, moves around. Sometimes in the ball lock trough, sometimes in the lower ball trough.
Not saying this will be an issue, just don't expect 100%, especially on the speech. That said, it is certainly more reliable then the factory 34 year old boards, at least mine is.
Chris

thats great feedback. I don't want to spend all this money and end up with something that will bug the sh_t out of me every time I fire it up. If I cant find original boards I will probably go with the discreet pinballpcb boards if necessary. i did email Jim at rottendog and will post his response here. p.s it's supposed to sh_tty out for the rest of the year...

Quoted from mof:

I just upgraded my Black Knight to Rottendog power supply and MPU.
I too don't have the laugh during attract mode. What a bummer !!! That goofy laugh really makes me smile while it's on an I'm working on machines...
Anyone know of "why" this would happen?
The laugh works during the game with the use of magna save after a drain.

Here's an exchange I had with Jim at Rottendog:
Jim thanks for the fast response. I will post your answer on the pinside forum where I got the response from. Are you on pinside? Here’s the link to the thread.

Interesting. Thanks for sending me the comments.

Item 1 was fixed about a year and a half ago (maybe 2 years).

Item 2 is new to me. Do you have the email of the person who posted that problem? If so, I could offer to test his board out and find out what is the problem.

Hi Jim,
On your site you reference some audio bugs on the combo mpu/driver board for the original black knight.

I just heard this: “The Rottendog board certainly has some advantages, but please note:
1) Mine had messed up speech. In attract mode, it does not "laugh" after saying "The Black Knight will slay you!", and during game play, after ball 3 is over, you only get a bit of speech and then the background noise plays for like 5-6 seconds

Not saying this will be an issue, just don't expect 100%, especially on the speech. That said, it is certainly more reliable then the factory 34 year old boards, at least mine is.“

I am weighing this vs the piball pcb products. Let me know if this is fixed.

Thanks!

RB

Quoted from Black_Knight:

I don't have displays, but I have a new Rottendog power board and a new Kohout sound/voice board combo if anyone is looking.

I'll keep that in mind as I star to re-assemble this disaster. I'll PM you

Got frankenstein-knight put together on sunday with power and solenoid boards off ebay. Did some basic boardwork etc. and I gotta say I was pretty pleased when it fired right up! It's in attract mode and the black knight sounds like Herman Munster laughing just after choking on a large bong-hit. Got the rottendog displays in today. They all work (after removing the keys on the old ribbon connectors). Nows where i begin to discover deeper problems. First one being scrolling numbers in audit/adjust mode. I need to spend more time with the manual open but I'm happy i now have a good starting point. These are all before pictures except for the last one which is after i got it cleaned up ( 6 hours worth) and semi-operational. What I cleaned off/out-of this thing was pretty gross. Sorry for the sideways pics.
