I recently bought a black hole from someone who said the game worked prior to moving it, but now it doesn't. I know this is the classic excuse, but I'm relatively handy with pins/arcades so I took the chance. This Black Hole has the PI80/x4 mod install. All connections appear to be good. However, when I turn it on, it says there's a slam switch error. So I soldered the slam switch together. It STILL says there's a slam switch error. Every time I try to start a game, it makes a noice and flashes "GAME OVER". The knocker goes off, but no balls are ever kicked out. I'm at a loss on this one. Does anyone have any ideas?

Can you enter switch test (18) to see if any other switches are reported closed? Whether this will help or not is just a guess.
The slam switch is not on the switch matrix unfortunately. On a stock MPU, it's an input to one of the RIOTs.

When I enter the switch test, none of the other switches show closed. This is why I'm so frustrated with it. Everything SEEMS to be fine...but obviously its not.

Just to be sure: does the game need credits to start or is it set to free play?

Does it behave differently with the switch connectors removed? This is connector 5 and 6 on the original MPU.

This may or may not tell us anything, as I don't know how these guys programmed their boards but I do think it's odd that they didn't defeat it on the hardware side with as many problems as they cause in these games.

What if you take the balls out first, then start a game, then drop the balls into the outhole... does it kick the balls, or it just sits there? Do the credits decrement by one when you push Start?

So after you start a game and it fails and makes a noise etc., is it just stuck there at that point, and no 'slam switch' error?

Ok. I took a video to upload, but it won't let me. Taking the balls out had no effect whatsoever. When I first got it, it would say "oh no" when I started it, which makes sense since it's throwing the slam switch error. However, now it doesn't say anything. It just won't start. The credits always display 99, which I'm assuming means it's set to free play? Also, it cycles through balls 1, 2, and 3 on the counter immediately, but the ball kicker never fires. I also tried dropping some of the drop targets because I remembered it showing that as an error when I first got it. However, it still seems to test all switches as fine. When I go to the switch test, it flashes three dashes, then tells me which switch I hit. Should I hit one. I tried resetting it to original settings and it went back to saying "oh no" when I try to start a game, so at least that makes sense. I have no idea how to fix this. Anyone else have this board and have this issue, or know a good number to call for support?

Does that board have dip switches or another way to set the game? Any chance it lost its memory and is using whatever default game? Have you tried emailing those guys?

Just because the switch is soldered closed does not mean the circuit is "closed" or not open someplace else. Trace the wires from the slam switch all the way back to the board and ensure proper continuity.
