    MPU-Driver (resized).jpg

    #1 1 year ago

First, thanks for all the help, I've learned a ton. I have been slowly restoring my BK and it's been a blast. Well I had it playing 100% for several months untill....got done playing a few games and instead of turning it off, I left it running in attract mode. I was working on another project in the shop, I like the exrta noise. So all of a sudden the bell rings once and attract mode stops, just left with some GI lighting. After looking at it I figured out that the MPU locked up, (0 displayed on MPU board with both leds lit up). So I'm troubleshooting a few things and out of the corner of my eye I see something move. The power resistors on the bottom right corner of the driver board overheated and start to fall out. 4 of those 3watt 27 ohm resistors fell completely off the board. These are powered thru Lamp B+ on 2J4. I put everything back together and the machine will boot into attract mode and locks up after about 10 seconds. I have to unplug 2J4 after lockup or the resistors overheat quickly. One other thing, the flashers on the sword from 2 to 10 quit working at the same time. I upgraded to led's a while back with no problems. I'm guessing I have a thermal problem on MPU board. I have another complete driver board and it does exactly the same thing. Thanks for your help....

Have you replaced the 40 pin connector and ic sockets? This is often the cause of many issues.

    #3 1 year ago

I replaced both ends of the 40 pin interconnect but no sockets yet. Thats probably next. I think only 6 ICs are in sockets now, 4 game roms, 1MPU and 1cmos chip. I have swapped out the ROM with spares with no luck. I reseated the other two ICs.

Take out the driver board and unplug everything except the top left connector to the MPU. Boot up and see what you get, doing it this way will show you if it's a MPU problem or driver board problem

Without the driver board it goes strait to lockup. Pushing the cpu test button produces no blinks. It will boot with driver board connected for about 10 seconds before it locks up.

The mpu and driver board need to be connected to boot properly

But it's not, so isolate first. Once the MPU boots by itself, the driver board can then be tackled.

So it doesn't boot without the driver connected. That is normal. Somewhere I read with the isolated MPU in the lockup mode, if pressing the MPU test button causes the two LEDs to blink, the MPU board is ok. This doesn't happen. I can get it to boot into attract mode by disonnecting the +12vdc and just having the +5vdc applied.

Ok, I have it on my bench using Hans' test fixtures. It still boots without 12vdc and fails digit test. It skips 3's-5's-7's and throws in a few flashes instead of just rolling thru all the digits.
