I am compiling a list of Pinball "scandals", I'll add a poll later to see which one Pinsiders feel has had the biggest impact on the hobby. In no particular order:

VonnieD Kickstarter campaign
Phil's reveal about Dutch Pinball
WOZ Ruby Red announcement
Homepin bans North American customers
Bumper Action (JJP's Australian distributor) fiasco
Dennis Nordman leaves Heighway Pinball
Long wait for Jpop's games (Expo cabinet-only reveal)
Kevin goes quiet on Predator
Wayne at Mr Pinball Australia's original Medieval Madness remake
Walking Dead premium version announced "late"
Cunningham IPB Bankruptcy and Liquidation Scandal
MMR coin-mech-gate
Nucore (Big Guys Pinball) and Pinbox dispute

I'm sure there are many I'm forgetting, what have I missed?

*P.S. I hope this doesn't offend, I know there are real people involved in these happenings, its just a way for us all to process the many recent ups and downs of this hobby.

Yikes...VonnieD pinball

Let's not forget W. Gillard's Mr. Pinball Australia and the mess that was the original MMR

#3 9 years ago
Quoted from Underspin:

Good one, i'll add it to the list.

#4 9 years ago

DaveH draining this topic. Scandalous.

Walking dead premium version announced "late"

Quoted from Nightstick:

Walking Dead premium version announced "late"

OK, got it.

#7 9 years ago
Quoted from DaveH:

DaveH draining this topic. Scandalous.

Dave, don't go!

#8 9 years ago
Quoted from solarvalue:

Williams closes pinball division

How was this a scandal?

#9 9 years ago

i think the VonnieD thing would have had to have been taken seriously for more than 5 minutes for it to register as a scandal. it was more of a farce.

#10 9 years ago
Quoted from Magic_Mike:

How was this a scandal?

Maybe it wasn't, I seem to recall there were all kinds of conspiracy theories about it.

#11 9 years ago

Must have missed it ...
What was Phil's reveal about dutch pinball?
I know he left the company, but what did he reveal?

What about the Cunningham IPB Bankruptcy and Liquidation Scandal?

#14 9 years ago

Pinball was made illegal because of gambling.

#15 9 years ago
Quoted from solarvalue:

Maybe it wasn't, I seem to recall there were all kinds of conspiracy theories about it.

WMS closed the unprofitable side of their company, in order to dedicate their company strictly to the slot machine gaming industry.

No conspiracy.

#16 9 years ago

I think this thread title should be changed to Tomfoolery or Shenanigans.

#17 9 years ago
Quoted from Nevus:

Pinball was made illegal because of gambling.

I think its overshadows everything else listed from a historical standpoint. Maybe you want to compile a list from just 2014?

#18 9 years ago
Quoted from Join_The_Cirqus:

What about the Cunningham IPB Bankruptcy and Liquidation Scandal?

Added.

#19 9 years ago
Quoted from underlord:

I agree, many of those I wouldn't really call scandals.

#20 9 years ago
Quoted from Magic_Mike:

OK, removed.

OK, I put "scandal" in quotation marks, how's that?

#22 9 years ago
Quoted from Nevus:

Pinball was made illegal because of gambling.

Can you be more specific?

#24 9 years ago

original skepticism of BBB.
Croc Hunter

#25 9 years ago
Quoted from solarvalue:

OK, I put "scandal" in quotation marks, how's that?

I'm just jivin' ya. This thread is educational if not entertaining.

#26 9 years ago
Quoted from Glarrownage:

Yeah, I think I'm going to leave this off, doesn't really fit with the rest of the list.

Mad Mike's (Mad Amusements) abuse of overseas customers, and locking out many USA customers for trying to help those who were being stolen from.

#28 9 years ago
Quoted from dsuperbee:

original skepticism of BBB
Croc Hunter

I guess "long wait for BBB" should be on there but doesn't really seem relevant now that they have been delivered.

Was any money taken for Croc Hunter?

#29 9 years ago
Quoted from solarvalue:

OK, I put "scandal" in quotation marks, how's that?

Yeah that works much better.

#30 9 years ago
Quoted from Pintucky:

Mad Mike's (Mad Amusements) abuse of overseas customers.

I think I'll leave vendors, private sellers out of this. I'll restrict it to pinball machine company/manufacturer related "scandals", I guess that justifies leaving the US pinball ban out of it too.

The Pre-Order model in general.

lol

Nothing to be sorry for. It's not like I'm taking this thread particularly serious.

labnip scoops Stern on the next Tron themed pin... Tron Prequel
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/tron-prequel-pinball
Stern throws massive fit basically destroying current office and has to move to new location as a result.
In a continued fit of madness, Stern unleashes an additional hoard of zombies on the market.
Endless threads ensue seeking to understand how all this zombie girth could have happened, all along not realizing it originated from the mind blowing Tron Prequel pin. Entire pinside abandons hatred of pre-orders and immediately pours billions into Tron Prequel pre-order making full payment in advance.
Significant exodus of liquid capital from individual savings accounts causes Wall Street to sell in shocking bear market.
As a result, oil prices collapse to reduce NAVL shipping costs for global wave of Tron Prequel pin shipments. Real Estate market booms as pinball owners so excited about getting their new Tron Prequel pin begin buying 2nd homes to store & play their new pin and house extra NIB Tron Prequel pins as their primary retirement assets for future sales, but continue to distribute propaganda that pins aren't investments. A few years later, labnip announces Tron Prequel Premium pin and the bleep hits the fan. Soon after PPS announces Tron Prequel R based on illegal Nucore technology.
Pinside servers collapse under weight of scandal threads.
Pinsiders go crazy and begin playing pinball more, mostly their Tron Prequel pin

Nice!

What happened with the trim?

There was a ton of behind the scenes crap with BBB as well.
No idea about croc hunter. I think all that was ever shown was an empty cab

#39 9 years ago

I still think jpop takes the cake. I feel bad for anyone who's still vested in his games.

It's your thread. Your call. No problem.

What about the guy who said he would "eat hair" if his Star Wars pin did not sell for big bucks. I don't think that that damn pin ever really sold and we all never got to see this guy eat hair.

That was a true "scandal" and I'm still pissed that this has never been resolved.

This is not strictly pinball related, but Fox canceling Arrested Development was a travesty.

Not quite the travesty that was canceling Firefly.

I would say that any one that's been in this hobby for more than 10 years will say the Wayne ( Mr. Pinball Australia ) Crock Hunter / MM remake takes the cake ! If you were around to see that you would never ever Pre-order a pin !

#46 9 years ago

I would say that pinball being illegal should definitely be on your list.

The Campaign to Destroy Pinball

In January 1942, New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia officially banned pinball machines in New York City and then executed Prohibition-style raids to round up all pinball machines and arrest their owners. The raid resulted in thousands of pinball machines being confiscated, smashed with sledgehammers by the Mayor and the NYPD, and dramatically dumped into the city's rivers.

I'd say the biggest scandal in pinball history has to be Centerflanks Tron apron saga!

#49 9 years ago

The whole crapstorm/lawsuit that is brewing between Nucore (Big Guys Pinball) and Pinbox is entertaining if not scandalous.

#50 9 years ago

Any kickstarter/pre-order model is a potential scandal.
