When vari-target is hit, relay "AX" is energized, motor turns, but NO score is added to score reels. Scoring works correctly for everything else. This issue is same regardless of number of players.
Where should I be looking?

So it doesn't score ANY of the point values, or advance the bonus when pegged?
I don't have a schematic for Big Indian, but would start by looking for a motor switch (possibly at position 2) that feeds through a normally closed switch on the Vari-target reset relay and checking continuity and adjustment of those 2 switches and also inspect for broken off wires at the tab-end solder joints.

If the 1000 Point (L) relay doesn't activate when this happens,
Starting with this switch on the Vari-Target Reset (BX) relay, then the indicated motor switches, and then this switch on the Vari-Target Score Control (AX) relay,
