long time listener first time caller.....

My super sweet Big Guns table has been a warrior. A champion if you will. Until just before thanksgiving! Turned her on, and got ball waiting. ball waiting. ball waiting. uggggghhhhhhh. so i pulled the glass and drained the balls one by one down the middle. they loaded in to the trough and still; BALL WAITING! Went in to test mode/ switch edges and tested the switches. boom. Left trough switch not working. went down and scooped 2 from the game exchange for like $4 each. Time to solder! took my parts home, turned off and unplugged the machine, took a picture, de-soldered the old switch, soldered in the new switch, compared pic to verify establishment and connection accuracy.... had a beer...... plugged in and turned on machine! and.... BALL WAITING! All the other trough switches work! I'm bummed. any ideas?

#2 6 years ago

Can you take a picture of the wiring?

Do the other switches in that row all work?

#3 6 years ago

Bummer. You're on the right track for sure. trace the wiring of the switch back to the backbox to see if you can find some other break in the wire, or a connector, or something. You didn't say if you tested it again after you installed the new switch. Might want to do that again as well.

#4 6 years ago

Thanks for the replies!

So, I did test the switch after install in test mode switch edges- no go. I’ll trace again even harder all the wires from switch back the top but everything appears to be solid. All the other switches in the row work...
unlucky #13 I guess?
Really would love to get this going again, my kids are begging to play.

Attached a couple pics for reference and can provide more if that’s helpful or needed! The switch in question is the white one in the pic and #13 in the diagram.

Thanks again!!!

Some switches have different pin outs. Did you compare the COM, NO, NC for each switch.

To be honest I did not compare! I was under the impression that an exact replacement would need to be re installed mirroring the previous installation.

I’ll check the layout in an hour or so!

#7 6 years ago

Ok just verified that the new switch is soldered to the same locations as the old switch. The diode is soldered to the no port and the solid yellow wires are soldered to the com port on the old switch and the new switch respectively...

Still not working in test mode and still ball waiting displayed..

Wondering what to do next. Trying to not get discouraged as I’m new to pinball repair but yea.. Thanks for everyone’s help thus far and I truly look forward to more replies.

Maybe together we can learn me some repairing skills

This only leaves 2 options, the new switch is bad or out of adjustment or the diode is open.
So put game in switch test and take a jumper wire and jumper the two switch terminals, does it show up now? No, then jumper the diode and then press the switch. Does it show up now? Replace whichever item that's bad and play some pinball.

Or the wire from it to the next switch in the row is broken

#10 6 years ago

Man I am such a noob, could ya more explain the jumper scenario, please? I took a wire and bypassed the diode, switch still doesn’t appear I’m switch test... I took a wire and put the switch terminals together and it doesn’t appear in switch test. I ran a new wire from the previous switch and that didn’t work either. What baffles me is the switch before and after #13 work great. Wondering if it’s the diode but when I bypas it, that doesn’t help either. Ugh. Going to de solder this one and try that other one I got at the same time..... could it be a ground issue? How do I check that?

I’m trying guys
Thanks! Seriously

#11 6 years ago

De soldered #13, soldered in another new switch, still no go. Does not appear in switch test, and both before and after switches still do. I guess I’ll try and source this diode, as to solder in a new one and see if that fixes it.

De soldered Diode and posted pics. Diode sheath looks as if it’s seen some heat, and the diode itself had a white dust on it. Cleaned the dust off as to make the letters and numbers legible. Looks like |N400| ?

1N4004. Do you have a multimeter you could test it with?

#13 6 years ago

Take your jumper and jump from the white/green to the 2 yellows on the switch, does it show now. If not then you need to check the other end of the white/green wire.

#14 6 years ago

If you buy 1n4007 diodes you can use them any time a 1n400x diode is called for.

#15 6 years ago
Quoted from Jayson_Sumpter:

I took a wire and bypassed the diode

But did you also push on the switch at the same time?

#16 6 years ago

Well I followed the white/green with my finger and eye balls and guess what. Broken wire. Going to solder it now and see if that fixes it!!!

Maybe you guys can help me fix a problem that has existed for a while now.. doesn’t prevent game play but sure is frustrating on many levels and for several reasons...

Whenever I turn the game on it says adjust switches 52-55. The don’t work on switch edge test.. i pics of all the points of termination across that path. Maybe you guys see something I don’t?????

Looks like pics work from the left flipper to the backboard connector, in order as listed in the wiring diagram..

Thanks in advance!!

All in the same column sounds like you've got another broken wire somewhere... Start checking continuity

#21 6 years ago

Could someone please tell me where switch 59 tower is. I do not see it in the layout or maybe im blind.

#22 6 years ago

I don’t see it on my playfield schematic.... my uneducated amateur thought is that it might be in the backboard?

Im sure someone with more insight will chime in!

I’m still diagnosing my “adjust switch” issue for 52-56......

#23 6 years ago

IL be with my old guns tonight. IL take a look.
In game play if you don't hit that switch for 20 games or so I belive it will say that. Game thinks it's broken .

#24 6 years ago

The tower 59 is the skill shot. Mine gave error when I got it only because it had been so long since it had been triggered the machine thought it was broken. Just hit the switch mid game and the error should go away

#25 6 years ago

Ohhhh the skill shot!!!
