I think we need a BG club. I just picked one up last week and I will soon have it in my basement. I have a few things I wonder if other BG owners have done.

Any one have any mods?

Any one using the latest ROM (L-8)? If so, whats different about it, is it worth it?

Ill throw pics of mine up by next weekend, but lets see those beautiful BIG GUNS!

Hope your ceilings are high, very tall pin. Great machine, love the art and backbox animation.

#3 9 years ago

No mods on mine except for some Led's which look pretty good on this machine. You will need a ceiling of 83 inches or so. It's pretty tall. No room for a topper for most people.
The one thing I did do to mine was to lay down a small piece of mylar underneath the drops from the two rails. The ball will start to damage that area if not protected. Have fun with your new pin, now go save the Queen!!!

I am fully measured and approved.

I plan to LED it out. I am going to copy the TNT youtube video for the LED's as their's looks VERY nice.

I will think about the mylar....isnt the playfield already covered in mylar from the factory?

#5 9 years ago

I enjoy BG. Very fast game.

I haven't added any mods, other than spot lights to help add light to some of the very dark areas of the pf.

Glad to be part of the club.

#6 9 years ago

No mods on mine either, I guess you can be the trail blazer on this one. The mylar is on the playfield but like a lot of games, where it could use it I.E the drop from the cannons there is no mylar.

I own one, couldnt pass on the deal i got, and i bought it anyways knowing it was never going into "my" gameroom, im short by an inch or so, but i also bought it so i could pull my nf off route and put that there.......

#8 9 years ago

I used to have one (my avatar might look familiar). I added some additional lighting, and always loved the quick save the queen idea, but man, I'm never seen a machine with so many targets that do so little. I always thought above BOP this was the next best game for proc.

Really really really love this game from the first time I ever played one down in Illinois at this guys house who I was buying a ton load of games off of at the time and he had one set up in his living room that he wanted me to play. Long story short and $500 later its in the back of my truck and heading home with me that same day. I couldn't wait to get home each day and play it and that music kept going through my head all day long. I shopped and sold it for $1000, this is back in 1997. I regretted selling it but it just didn't fit into the liscensed theme of games that I had going at that time, so it had to go. Fast forward to 1999 and we bought a bigger house and all of a sudden had a lot more room for more games and I decided to find another Big Guns. Fast forward again to Expo 2002 and Kerry Stair had one for sale in his booth for $400 shopped and working nicely. Needless to say I paid him on the spot and I've had it here ever since. No way that game is ever leaving. Love it !!

Any one ever take the head completely off theirs? Anything I should be extra cautious about?

#11 9 years ago

I bought a Big Guns about a month ago and got it working. Playfield is nice and the only issue was displays.

I was a little bit put off by the crowded playfield and didn't like it at first. Now I keep playing it some more and I am starting to like it more. Not sure if I will keep it but I should give it more time. It's tough to get multiball started and once it does it drains pretty quick. Challenging pin!

I posted a different thread here http://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/what-led-should-i-put-in-big-guns-center-post

about putting a bright LED in the Center post. It really seems to need this! I can barely tell the post is up. I want to be able to see it from my periphiral vision so need a super bright one in there.

This is an awesome idea. I agree that Williams should have done this. I had this same issue with Fire when I played it, I had no idea the post was up.

Hypothetical question here. If Big Guns were to be released by Stern today, how much would it cost?

Look at all the features included, we have 4 flippers, 6 drop targets, 13 standups, 2 Cannons, center post, 2 slings, 1 controlled gate, 1 kickback, and a mini bagatelle. They would have to remove the cannons of course for the Pro model. Also Pro wouldn't have the hand drawn art on the backglass, only photo shopped art.

So, a Big Guns LE should go for $9000 in today's marketplace.

#14 9 years ago

$9000! A mere 10X what I had mine listed for a few weeks ago...

Good thing I only paid $600....

Immediately fell in love with it, but just as quickly fell out of love with it. Too tall for my basement. Sits between T-2 and Operation Thunder. Get s very little play.

How does it get ANY play if its too tall for your basement?

Can any one tell me if BG is prone to ghosting with LEDs as well?

3 pins are in garage, 5 are in basement. operation thunder also too tall for basement. t-2 is close, but would fit. just don't want to take head off to move it. Can't move with head on, some tight turns.

Hated this game at my local joint in the late 80's. Compared to the Williams Cyclone it replaced, it was way too difficult to earn credits. I LOATHED IT... even boycotted it for days at a time... but always ended up trying again & again out of sheer frustration.
When the opportunity to buy one came up last year, I was hesitant. But I figured I could 'get even' with it by playing it for "free" & then kicking it to the curb. What can I say. It grew on me & I still have it.

Bought my Big Guns from the famous (or is it infamous?) B_R.

Played Big Guns in 1988 at 7 years old. It was in a resort in Steelville, MO that we used to vacation at. I picked one up that needed a shop out and display for $400 a mere half mile or so from my house in January 2012. It won't leave the collection. Awesome example of the 80s and a great childhood memory.

Good thing I placed mine at school and build a P-ROC in it, so students can (re)programm the game. It's only 40 minutes a week though, so though there're new rules coming, this project is not moving fast.

#28 9 years ago

Why does the backglass have a planet that looks like an eyeball? It looks cool. Someone needs to ask Python about that.

There's some sexual innuendo on the backglass if you look for it.

#29 9 years ago

My wife calls it "the dick machine"

#30 9 years ago

Here is what I am thinking for the backbox. (Coin Taker)

BACKBOX GI
44 RED SUPERS (18)
44 GREEN SUPERS (17)
44 BLUE SUPERS (10)
44 ORANGE SUPERS (2)
44 COOL SUPERS (5)

I based this off of this video from TNT. really like the look of their back box.

#31 9 years ago

Going with Coin Taker kit but I am going to customize the back box colors.

Any one have ghosting issues with LEDs in BG? Should I pay the $20 to upgrade GI and inserts to non-ghosting, or is it not a big deal?

#32 9 years ago

just sold mine, not sorry to see it go.

2 weeks later
#33 9 years ago

We have LED's that ghost but the plastics even clean are dark enough that the only place it's annoying is the multiplier (8 led's) in the middle of the PF.

1 week later
#34 9 years ago

Finally got BG in the basement. WOW, so many connectors in that backbox. Got it all back together, cleaned the Kings Chamber out, and installed LEDs in the backbox.

I think it looks GREAT.

Cant wait to do the playfield. Going to start this week some time.

#35 9 years ago

Buddy of mine has one that he picked up a New in Crate drop in PF for. I believe he paid more for the complete PF than he did the entire game.

Where did he get one of those?? That would be sweet to get for mine!

Wow.

Glad mine is in pristine condition. Barely any wear at all on the PF.

#38 9 years ago

These are usually in pretty great condition. I love mine. it's a fast game and those cannons are a GREAT toy. A lot of folks don't like the lack of pop bumpers. but the game flows nicerly without them. In my mind, the upeer playfield with the troll drops and targets takes the place of any pop action.

I am doing some minor restoration work on the bottom lip of the cabinet on mine, too much pushing it around unprotected without it's legs on in it's life. Some qwikwood will have to serve it's purpose in those places.

#39 9 years ago
Quoted from BigB:

I do not remember where he found it. But it was a while ago, maybe 5 years?

#40 9 years ago

I really like mine too, seems like the more I play it the more fun it gets..

Currently I have it here in the break room at work, it seems to get more play than my Radical that sits next to it. However, it seems like the more "advanced" players work their way over to Radical after getting pretty good at BG.

No mods really, just LED's in the back box and some in the play-field for good effects. Definitely a good solid machine that doesn't break down too often.

I kind of like those different colors behind each guy in the kings chamber. I have cool white behind each right now, doesnt look as nice. If you get a chance, take a pic with the lights off so I can see it in all its beauty!

#42 9 years ago

Dare I say, I may have a HUO Big Guns? LOOK at this shooter lane....never seen one this clean.
IMG_4560.JPGIMG_4560.JPG

Shopping isnt going too bad...although they made it pretty rough to get the back corner plastics off....I may forgo those for now since they arent TOO dirty.

Sweet looking Big Guns!!

#44 9 years ago

Thanks! I am pretty happy with how it turned out. The CT kit I customized looks sweet. I am going to color match the kings chamber though. Luckily I have a few colored 555 around so all I need to order is a blue one and a flasher I was missing. Does every ones BG have 2 flashers along the back wall behind the scroll?

Another question; How does every one have their rules set? I am thinking I am going to increase the time allowed to rescue the queen and then up the amount of guards to all 10 so you have to hit the 2 banks of 3 and the 2 banks of 2 as well. Might make it more difficult and more fun. Queens rescue seems to go really fast with default time and only 6 guard targets to hit. What do ya'll have your set at?

#45 9 years ago

Right now it's on the default settings. I've tried to adjust the length of time and # of targets for the Queen's Rescue but it becomes too easy and I end up scoring more than 10,000,000 points which doesn't register on the display. The display then lists the high score by the players initials in alphabetical order.

#46 9 years ago

we have ours set to hard and you have to strike each guard once in the standard amount of time, to save the queen. Yes, we have two flashers behind the back wall and 4 regular bulbs. here is a photo of ours

Nice.

Any one have an issue with the bagatelle always lighting the same lane for the extra ball shot at the end? Mine seemed to move around at first, but now it only seems to select the lane farthest to the right exclusively.

I THOUGHT I saw a thread on this a while ago, but I cant find it.

Any one?

#48 9 years ago

Mine will select lane 1 or 2 at random but never 3,4, or 5.

#49 9 years ago
Quoted from BigB:

Yes, I believe this is a malfunction. I think I read something about some diodes....I will continue to look.

#50 9 years ago

My bagatelle only lights lane #2 for that shot. Has done this consistently ever since I got it 18 months ago...
