When you vote, please make a quick post with your favorite game from your chosen year. It will help keep the poll alive with micro-bumps.

    1. What's your favorite year for pinball (year of release)?
    2. Why that year?
    3. Name your favorite title(s) from that year.

    thanks!

Years in the running so far are:

    1965, EM
    1976, EM
    1979
    1981
    1988
    1990
    1993
    1997
    2012

When we see 9 years with multiple thumbs up, we can start the votes... getting there.

    #3 6 years ago

    1981

My favorite games come from that year (Black Hole, Centaur). I think I'm more of a fan of orbit shots and spinners than ramps, and I love drop targets...
    -mof

Here are some top titles from 1981:

    Barracora
    Black Hole
    Centaur
    Eight Ball Deluxe
    Elektra
    Embryon
    Fathom
    Flash Gordon
    Iron Maiden
    Lightning
    Mars God of War
    Medusa

    Fathom...December 1980
    EBD September 1980
    Flash Gordon May 1980

....unless Pinside's production dates are wrong

    Fathom...December 1980
    EBD September 1980
    Flash Gordon May 1980
....unless Pinside's production dates are wrong

I was searching by "manufacture date" not "project date"

For Fathom, I see : Date Of Manufacture: August, 1981

I hope I'm using the tool correctly.

Surely we have some more strong years beyond 1993 and 1981, even if they aren't absolutely tops!
When were some best years for EMs?
    -mof

    #10 6 years ago

    1997
    MM
    NGG
    CV

    #11 6 years ago

This type of question shows the various ages of pinsiders
The children only know DMD, so they will pick a year in the 90's
The 40-50yo will pick late 70's early 80's as that is what wr played when we were kids
The old men will pick a year before 1974, and claim that those games were when pinball was a game of skill

    1980/1

    #12 6 years ago

I love dmd w/b widebodies so I agree with some that 1993 is the zenith of the last golden age of pinball

    #13 6 years ago

    1932. Over 300 different games.

    #16 6 years ago

    1964-1965 was pretty good.

    #17 6 years ago

For EM's you can take your pick of any year from 1963 - 67, each year has multiple classic Wedgeheads , but if you had to pick the one outstanding year it might be 1965:

    Bank A Ball/Flipper Pool
    Buckaroo/Cowpoke
    Ice Revue
    Kings and Queens
    Paradise/Pleasure Isle
    Skyline

1976 was also a vintage year:

    Capt Fantastic
    Nightrider
    Old Chicago
    Bank Shot/Sure Shot
    Buccanneer
    Canada Dry
    Royal Flush/Card Whiz
    Surfer/Surf Champ
    Aztec
    Grand Prix
    Space Mission/Space Odyssey

    #18 6 years ago

1972 thru 1981. The new games with their time wasting DMDs and silly toys are for the children.

    #19 6 years ago

1981 is the best year hands-down and will never be repeated.

    #1 Bally Eight Ball Deluxe

    #2 Bally Eight Ball Deluxe

    #3 Bally Eight Ball Deluxe

    Nuff said!!!!!

As far as us kids were concerned back then there was no other machine.

It was the peak of the golden age and we used to drive miles out of our way to find an Eight Ball Deluxe.

I remember the other pins of 1981 like Fathom and Centaur and while they were good too, they never came close to the popularity or outright addictiveness of Eight Ball Deluxe.

Of course nowdays it's nice to have all of them because 1981 was such a great year but some things never change.

There is only one title that I have two of in my collection:

    IMG_2781.JPG

    #20 6 years ago

    '88
    Taxi
    Banzai run
    swords of fury
    cyclone

    #21 6 years ago

If I could only have machines from 1981 and 1993, I would be perfectly content.

For EM's, I would agree that 63-67 have some of the most iconic wedgeheads.

2013 was admittedly pretty sweet with Metallica, Star Trek, and WOZ. All really stellar games.

If I had to pick one winner: 1981 with a bullet.

    Black Hole
    Flash Gordon
    Centaur
    Fathom
    EBD

That's a lineup to covet right there.

    #22 6 years ago
    Quoted from mof:

What's your favorite year for pinball?

For Neil Nicastro, without a doubt, 1999

    #23 6 years ago

    1981

    Barracora
    Black Hole
    Centaur
    Eight Ball Deluxe
    Elektra
    Embryon
    Fathom
    Flash Gordon
    Iron Maiden
    Mars God of War
    Medusa

Plus I would add the Stern titles from 1980 81

    Seawitch (1980)
    Cheetah (1980)
    Quicksilver (1980)
    Star Gazer (1980)
    Flight 2000 (1980)
    Nine Ball (1980)
    Lightning (1981)
    Catacomb (1981)

    #24 6 years ago

It's funny that now we are concerned how we will have enough cash to buy all the new releases recently. It must have been brutal to be a home collector back then and have to buy, TZ, IJ, STTNG, WH2O, BSD, JD, TFTC, JP, and LAH all NIB. And that is just one year!

    #25 6 years ago

    76, 81, 92, 93, 94 and 13.

    To pick only one year.......93

    #26 6 years ago

    '93 then '92.

    #27 6 years ago

2014. Was 2013, but lately with all the new manufacturers and new games. It seems like each year is better than the last.

    Exciting times for pinball.

Not so in my case. I am 44 and my favorites are 90's dmd games...funnest original themes and a lot of thought went into each game.

    #30 6 years ago

    1947 humpty dumpty

    invention of the flipper

    #32 6 years ago

MM and CV are both in my top 3. 1997 is quality over quantity - excellent~

    #33 6 years ago

Coast2coat podcast has a few episodes that track great years in pinball.
    1993 all the way.

    #34 6 years ago

    Only one answer... 1981!

    1981-02 Flash Gordon
    1981-04 Eight Ball Deluxe
    1981-06 Embryon
    1981-06 Fireball II
    1981-08 Fathom
    1981-09 Medusa
    1981-10 Centaur
    1981-12 Elektra

    and that's only Bally!

1993 could be the best DMD year

    #35 6 years ago

    1979 wasn't too shabby...

    Flash
    Genie
    Gorgar
    Kiss
    Mystic
    Paragon
    Star Trek
    Space Invaders
    Xenon

    #36 6 years ago

I love those two years as well, but you gotta pick one sir...
    What do you decide?
    -mof

    #37 6 years ago

If I can only pick one and I'm lumping Fathom , EBD and Flash Gordon into this year because that's when they were played...

    1981

I'm personally a bit EM-curious. Wondering if there any other sweet spots besides 1965, 1972 and 1976 ?

The last few years of the 80s have my favorites.. but you do have to give props to 80/81 5 machines produced in numbers over 10k!!
