    Hello everyone,
First off I just want to let everyone know I am brand new to this. I picked up an EM machine and the thing is filthy. It looks and smells like a cigarette. It must have been in a bar at one point. Anyhow what is the best way of cleaning inside of the machine other than compressed air? What is the best way to clean switches, coils, wires, etc?

Firstly, welcome to Pinside! And firstly on your machine: don't go hog wild or you'll create more problems. Read Clay's famous guide carefully before starting: http://www.pinrepair.com/em/index1

I just happened to read through Clay's guides again the other night. I had read them before a few years back when I got my first machine, and they were great. Now I have spent some time fixing machines and understand them much better, but still it was worth every minute of time I spent to read them again. I learned even more by reading it all again as I now better understood some of the finer points. That writeup is truly brilliant in its structure and content. Supplement that by reading the various Vid guides and you will become a knowledgeable genius. But the real learning is when you start to work on it. When you get there, if you get hung up come here to Pinside and ask any questions you have. The support system here is also fantastic.

Congrats on your first machine. It will be a great learning experience.

After a good cleaning, the cigarette smell will probably still be there. I found scented dryer sheets can work wonders to eliminate the smell. When the machine is unplugged distribute a number of them inside the machine. The longer you leave them the better. Remove the sheets when you play the machine unless you have been very careful to put them where there are no mechanical or electrical connection. Don't forget to clean the green patina of tobacco off the cabinet; that will reduce the smell too.

Owning a machine is a hobby, playing it is an activity.
