There are too many to list but one of my favorites is the very, very soulful cover of The Stones' "Connection" by Montrose
Guns and Roses cover of 'Hair of the dog' (Nazareth)
Bowie cover of 'See Emily play' (Floyd)
Jonny Cash cover 'Hurt' (NIN)
I was bit amused how Judas Priest got sued over this song for that kid's suicide when they didn't even write it. Originally performed by Spooky Tooth.
TOOL's cover of Ted Nugent's 'Stranglehold'.
I also like Seether's cover of 'Careless Whisper' by George Michael.
thecoversproject is a great site, not all inclusive but i learned of some GREAT covers...

Quoted from SteveO:Van Halen- "You Really Got Me" (Originally The Kinks)
Oingo Boingo's cover of that song is a classic.
Quoted from DCFAN:R.E.M. "Superman"
Almost 30 years and I never knew this was a cover! Thanks, I had to go to YouTube to find the original

Yes. R.E.M. mainly stuck to writing their own music but Superman was one exception in their regular album releases.
If you are going to do a remake might as well improve on the original, especially an obscure original.
R.E.M. did do a few more covers such as "Toys in the Attic" in their outtake albums but never emphasized those.
Technically not a cover, but better than the original is Van Halen's version of there's only one way to rock. The dueling guitar work is awesome!
Quoted from Darcy:Manfred Mann - Blinded by the Light (B. Springsteen).
Absolutely agree with that, better than the original - sorry Bruce.
Not a rock song, but 'I will survive' Gloria Gaynor by Cake.
I know I'm going to get a lot of "hair band" hate on this, but White Lion does a great cover on Radar Love. Also, the Lions covered Dylan's Girl from North Country. It was used on the first episode of Sons of Anarchy Season 2. Isn't Priest's Green Metalishi (sp?) a Fleetwood Mac cover?
Symphony for the devil by Guns N Roses (originally by Rolling Stones)
Believe in Nothing by All That Remains (originally by Nevermore)
Bang a Drum by Chris Ledoux (originally by Jon Bon Jovi)
Cars by Fear Factory (original by Gary Numan)
Single Father by Kid Rock (original by David Allen Coe)
