That's a heck of a list! I don't think the previous decade would have had as many.

I remember seeing WOZ for the first time at the Pinball HOF in Vegas - probably in 2013 - and I was completely blown away. It took me a few years, but I finally bought one (last year). 2013 was a time when it was very difficult to find a pinball machine in the wild. I'm very happy to see the resurgence of the craft of making the machines as well as seeing them in public places.

I have not played all of the newer titles, but I think WOZ was a big game changer.

I think having a listing for simply Multimorphic is probably better, since Multimorphic has been EXTREMELY influental, enabling a bunch of well-regarded pins, but Lexy Lightspeed specifically doesn't really rank.

    OK added

I was going to just pick 10-12 pins but didn't want to leave anything important off.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think these home-pin versions have any chance being voted "best pinball of the decade" - at least not in any real numbers!

    Uh, hello. Where's SUPREME?

It's a shame that there's not a way to pick a top 3 per voter and then consolidate the results into an actual top 3.

    #159 4 years ago

Well..if we base it on pricing alone...clearly it is Supreme

    Oh and that 65k TZ.

The decade of pins from 2010-2019 includes 66 different pins, with Stern accounting for 39 (60% of them). 37 of the total number are on the Top 100 - impressive and these pins have shaped the landscape. It would have been impossible to stay jazzed about pinball without having played these Golden Age pins. Only pin I couldn’t find listed was Predator. It was an unlicensed title that never made final production.

If we include all the LE's + Pro combos would be over 100 pins.

    #164 4 years ago

I read the title and voted DI. I've never had more fun playing a game non-stop.

Then I read the description of the poll and changed my vote to WOZ. I don't see how anyone can argue with that. That one game single-handedly changed the way that all pinball companies, specifically Stern, built their machines. Total game-changer in the pinball world.

I don't own it and I've barely played it. I don't particularly like it. But I can admit how influential it was.

Voted WOZ because it changed everything about modern pinball. Full rgb lights, LCD screen, assets, theme immersion, and mechs. It also opened the doors to other manufacturers. Without JJP having a successful game, would there be a Spooky, Chicago gaming, or American pinball. And it is a great game. You may disagree it is the best playing game if the decade, but I think WOZ defined the decade.

I agree with Woz, I also think it's great but can see why some people don't like it (same with DI).

I think WoZ (JJP) and CGC (to a lesser extent) put pressure on Stern and that Stern is still the king of the hill but maybe with 70-80% of the market instead of 100% at the start of the decade. I don't think the boutique and small batch pins matter all that much as likely Stern will sell more pins in one month than Spooky sold in 5 years.

I see CGC making a pin like AFM (one of the best pins ever) and selling in the pro/premium/LE price of a Stern (a little more than a pro but a little less than an LE). But the big problem with CGC is running out of pins they can sell for $8300. Sure there is another 5-10 expensive titles but will people spend $8300 for a CFTBL, White Water or TOM remake?

JJP has to be the biggest threat to Stern but they seem to have higher BOM and long time between titles (like CDC) so if they have a bad title they have to suffer for tens of months before the next whereas Stern can do one every 304 months like clockwork.

    I agree 100%

interesting in this poll, I left a bunch of titles on like X-Men and most of the Stern and all of the Spooky, CGC and AP pins. But 40% votes going to JJP pins (Woz, DI and PotC only no other votes for any other JJP title yet).

No game that is not from JJP or Stern got more than 4 votes (so far even the CGC remakes) and JP got the most of any Stern (although I think it's more of a flavor of the month). Houdini is the highest vote getter that is not Stern or JJP but I do think Stern votes are being split with all their great pins.

    #168 4 years ago

I had to vote WOZ, though Alien is my personal grail. WOZ was so different, first one I played in the wild was horrid... literally rebuilt several aspects of the game as it was the early version..Once everything was solid, there was nothing out there at the time that was so unique.

It also allowed me to develop a great pin relationship w Eric, who is just a really nice guy, and huge asset to the hobby. His passion and drive for the game to work correctly, along with the willingness to field my phone calls at any hour ( for quite some time) really created a great time for me to reflect upon in my pinball journey.

It goes down as " most important pin" of the decade for me, as for better or worse, cemented my addiction to the hobby.

    #169 4 years ago

If the question was-What is the most beautiful game of the last decade? I would answer WOZ

It is a work of art, and the most innovative for sure. When it first came out the color-changing RGB blew me away.

    -Then I played it

I feel it is so packed with stuff and it is so stop and go that it was not any fun for me. There is a reason I call it 'The rainbow show with no flow.' -no offense

Had Dialed In for a couple months in the home and at first I really enjoyed the layout, flow and objectives. Then over time it lost its magic quickly and the theme fell flat for me. After a couple weeks of selfie camera-it got annoying for me quickly.

Had a awesome session last night on Star Wars LE with a friend and I have to say it is the best in the last decade. Best theme-by a mile, awesome layout, fantastic rule set and objectives, great video clips/orchestrated sounds from the movie, the list goes on and on. Can anyone tell-I love Star Wars!

DI and POTC still ride the coat tails of WOZ, w a very loud ( voting) fanbase.

POTC was to be my next JJP, but logic overruled my heart ( for once), and my hardest "pass".

DI wins pretty most every poll, except head to head w MET, for reasons stated above.

Maybe JJP "wins" this poll, but in truth...Most people thrash ( and love) their Stern's exponentially more....Is what it is...Imho...

JJP POTC - Amazing Pin for the Win

I just bought SW premium comic art and has been all I've been playing lately, I have to force myself to play my other pins just so they are not sitting un-played. But to me SW premium/LE has the best theme (how can it not it's SW original trilogy with good asset use) and has the best toy (IMO) Hyper Loop.

Looks like JJP is an influential company and their games have shaped the industry for the better. JJP’s games are jam-packed and fun. Deeproot hopes to create a similar trajectory one day. JJP is walking the talk everyday.

Woz....certainly the most polarizing game. Was interesting to see all those that hated it, bought it or had extensive time on it, changed their thinking to being a great game. I watched it develop over many many updates to turn into a masterpiece. In the end, there are so many great pins but woz helped change the industry for the better.

    #177 4 years ago

Woz wins most innovative and most beautiful...hands down, but I voted for POTC as the BEST game.

While POTC stood on the shoulders of Woz innovation, it improved upon it and delivered an even better game.
DI or Wonka would probably be my 'honorable mention' best games.
    JJP had a helluva decade.

    #178 4 years ago

Another vote here for WOZ. I do think Dialed In and POTC play a bit better but JJP brought back loaded pinball with WOZ combined with modern tech. The technology, coding, mechanics, and quality that went into WOZ are extremely impressive. Also, WOZ was released in 2013 and is still receiving code updates!

I hated woz on location and at convention but was early code and not well maintained location. I actually thought it was bad. But I played one in a home with complete code and a changed my mind think it’s one of the best games of all time.

    #181 4 years ago

So many great titles it's almost impossible to narrow down to just one. But I had to vote Metallica. When I saw the teaser trailer from Stern I got goosebumps. Although certainly not the first rock/music pin, it was the first one that made me think "Holy crap, I never thought ANYONE would do that theme." It kinda opened up the doors to more exciting/risky themes like TWD, Rob Zombie, ACNC, R&M, etc. Also, Metallica is just a great playing game with an awesome Lyman Sheats rule set.

    #182 4 years ago

I wish I could play even 1/3 of these.

So many great games listed I have never been within 500 miles of...

    #183 4 years ago

My vote goes to WOZ. I remember the discussions both on pinside and within the relatively small pinball community back then. Integrating LCD screens into pinball just made sense, but Stern was far from going that route. Enter JJP with an idea to load a pinball machine with toys, LED’s, and a large LCD screen. WOZ changed pinball...period. That said, the theme and style of play doesn’t resonate with me, so chances of ever owning one is low. Yet, when looking back on the 2010’s, I’ll always remember that WOZ come to be and pinball machine innovation and design was better afterwards.

    #184 4 years ago

Voted TNA. Loved a lot of other games, but TNA is just a pure magic experience unlike angthing else out there. It’s deceptive from a glance, looks like nothing is going on - but when playing, it feels more featured and powerful than almost any other modern game I’ve played. Phenomenal features, layout, simple to understand rules with depth and nuance to dig into, unparalleled use of RGB lighting, and the most amazing music. Also there’s something wacky genius about having an LCD & A/N score displays.

Also love Tron, Iron Man, AC/DC, and Metallica.

    #185 4 years ago
    Quoted from altan:

    IMHO it's
    1) Dialed IN
    2) WoZ
These two games either or between themselves defined the decade of pinball in terms of toys, lighting, displays and rules. They are damn awesome fun games too.
With that said, fun is in the eye of the beholder. No wrong answers here.
    ... Altan

Want to add that DI pushed the tech barrier by adding Bluetooth integration with phones and photo mode to expand interactivity with the player. Can’t wait until all machines post live streams and scores to a central portal.

    The Big Lebowski.

    #187 4 years ago
    Quoted from PinMonk:

It's a hard game to love, in my experience.

From my experience it is extremely sensitive to balance. A bit higher on the right or the left and the magic disappears. I will say it has made me a better player, with focus on combos and breath of shots.

    #188 4 years ago

XM is definitely a top game for me; partially because I grew up watching the cartoon in the 90s and love the X-Men outside of pinball.

When you take into consideration ground breaking and changing the only choice can be WOZ. It is hard to grasp how the remakes can be on this list these are games that are 20+ years old and it is sad that 20+ year old games are even considered. WOZ brought innovation and pushed things forward. As great as a game like Metallica is or many others there is little that could not have been done 20 years ago. Maybe pinball is just what it is when the theme is great, the shots work, the code complete and easy to understand and the world under glass tells the story. Without one of those a game can’t be great.

They’re better games. WOZ had different and new tech, but fundamentally a game isn’t tech...it’s a game. Games will be judged on fun and gameplay. Outside of the nice service menus, lighting and LCD, there’s nothing that innovative. Games have had up/down toys, spinning things, and doors that open forever.

    #191 4 years ago

My vote went to WoZ for the most influential pin LCD, color changing inserts and influential because it led to JJP being a serious competitor for the home collectors and might have led Stern to step up their game bring back old designers as well as new designers like Keith.

I think AFM LE is better game and ST premium is (currently) my favorite of the decade but Woz is the more influential.

Looking at the poll ST and Iron Man are my favorite pins that have not got a single vote (yet).

Technology though opens up new gameplay and choreography options for programmers to take advantage of and that's exactly what Keith Johnson and the team at JJP did so well with WOZ. WOZ may have some similar moving mechs of past games but those games from 20 years ago don't have anywhere close to the same amount of programming applied in terms of mode choreography, depth, utilizing RGB GI + RGB insert lighting, integrating LCD animations with HD video clips, etc.

A games programming and mode choreography are what ends up bringing a layout alive and from that fun gameplay is born. Without the tech and the programming all of these games are just a box of lights. This is why a rather minimalistic game such as TNA is considered so good as the programming and mode choreography is excellent.

WOZ is not a great shooting game but it is visually stunning with the feel of the theme. Set it next to BKSOR and it is a joke. When WOZ was introduced you looked at it and your mind didn’t think of it as a normal pinball machine now it is taken as the norm. Other than theme and how much one likes a theme a Stern in the past 10 years is just another Stern. Before any Stern fan boys say I am just ripping on Stern I am not I own 2 Stern from the last 10 years not because the are great games but because of theme and they are solid games. I would own a WOZ or a Spooky in addition to but there is no reason for a third Stern just more of the same.

So, it’s kind of weird that you day this, yet say WOZ was the only choice people should make for game of the decade.

I was there when it was introduced. I pre-ordered it before we even knew what it was really going to be. Then, I saw and played the proto at a show. I cancelled my order.

It was a normal game. It had a big TV on it and multicolored lights...but still a pinball machine. It didn’t play as well as the B/W classics & Stern SAM games that I loved at the time.

So there you go. Solid games. So now you could understand why someone would prefer a solid game as their pinball of the decade over WOZ. Look, WOZ is a game I respect. I get why people like it. But, it’s just a game like any other. For me TNA, AC/DC, Iron Man, Metallica are far better games from the decade.

Anyway, WOZ is winning the poll so, yay?

(edited) Is "mode choreography" the new buzz word for 2020?
Only slightly lamer than "immersive" I guess.

or "buttery smooth" when people defend 100% plastic ramps being offered on $7.5k-$15k NIB games!

Yeah I would never say "battery smooth."
I've only spent more than 7.5k on a pinball machine once, and the main ramp is at least half plastic.
But then again I'm a pinball player and not a bean counter. Plus I dont get down with picking a" team" and defending them no matter what.

I sent a suggestion to the This Week in Pinball guys that their voting really should have something like this added - maybe two categories, Best Pin of the Decade and Most Influential Pin of the Decade. There's only a chance to do this once every 10 years, so it really seems like an oversight not to have this award category on the TWIPies this coming ceremony.
