I just use Elmer’s glue. Butter the back side of the paper and where the paper is going, let the glue sit for about a minute, then put the paper on where you want it. Use your finger to roll out the air bubbles or a very small roller to get them out.
Quoted from phlamingo:Hi all,
We're working on our recently acquired 1948 United's Star Dust. It still has a lot of the original paper labels, but many are falling or have fallen off. What is the best method to reattach them to both wood and metal?[quoted image]
Super glue for me. Paper will stick to wood with wood glue, but not so well on slightly rusted/dirty/greasy metal. In my experience.
You can experiment with different types of double sided tape. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0856246YY/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_7YGS5GVDPWF1XDF9Q1F0
I only recently started using it the past few years and so can't attest to long term durability, but I've found that a glue stick (Staples glue stick (applies purple, dries clear) in particular) works well for attaching paper to metal (for example, a paper label on a relay or stepper like in your photo). I apply like Billc479 does with elmer's and then immediately position the label as needed. Seems to dry quickly.
Good luck and have fun with the Star Dust--looks like an interesting machine!
I use double sided tape that is supposedly photo archival quality. I figure it has to be as good as the 40+ year old rubber cement that they used originally
I do like to put any labels back into a machine that I can.

Glue stick works great, fast and easy with no mess. Been using it for many years and it has held up just fine. Wood or metal.

Thanks for Glue Stick tip. Easy to use and worked great for a Sea Shore restoration that needs all new labels.
