IMHO, I think the LEDs should be used to accent the existing colors in the machine and help the original artwork to POP. Forcing color is a common mistake, as well as choosing incorrect bulbs for GI. I see a lot of people using 3/4 LED or ultra-brights to really light up plastics, but those bulbs do not do anything for the illumination for the playfield. I have been really liking the retro series from CT for GI lighting, as you get the proper light spread and plastics illumination.
I am also guilty of doing some of the above, but I am in process of changing it out soon. I did my SF2 (pics, pg.1) first and used the 3LED bulbs for the blue LEDs. I really liked them, but once I did the orange in the front of the playfield in the retros, I liked the light spread and felt it didn't take away from brightness LEDs offer.
My Gulfstream EM (pics, pg.1) used retros over the entire playfield area. Granted, as an EM, retros are an obvious choice. I used cool white behind my plastics (cool popped much nicer than warm), and only used a few choice colored bulbs for under the diverter plastics to help match them to the playfield colors, and add just a touch of color rather than force color into the machine.
