I have a very strict budget.

I have a very strict budget.
A lot of games are great from that era...really too many good ones to crown 'the best'. But the one I have that I think is very difficult and that I don't think I'll ever complete is Cyclopes. Designed by Roger Sharpe, he did an interview about the game saying that he designed it to be very hard to reach the end.

Double rows of drops!
Quoted from wdennie:What? "no lion man" Swords of fury!!!
Pinball history lesson.
SoF was 1988, not 1986.
Design started in early 1987.
Knowledge is power.

This is a good game, looking for better example.
Hard to find.
Quoted from jgentry:Thinking about adding something different to my collection. I've always been a DmD guy and my oldest game is a 1992. I've been thinking about adding something from an older era with a completely different feel. I have looked at the top rated list and some games like Fathom jump out at me. What games would you recommend that would be a good change up from todays fast games but still has a decent rule set and will not get old to fast?
There is no right answer. I own about 50 games that fall into this category. Everyone of them unique and great. Fathom is not a long term keep though I have had a few of them. I want to sell the one I have ....I think...
Maybe Frontier but Geez, ...I have 6 of the 80's Bally in a Row and we play them all cause they are great. Frontier, Mystic, Viking, NGS, Stones, Skateball, but then I can say Paragon. Mata Hari, Eight Ball... on and on.... It will never stop. they all have something.
I would buy 1 and plan on buying 20. Then the classic stern's. Fist, Stargazer, Nineball, Meteor, Ray, Witch, Big Game, My god stop...Quicksilver My fav.).... Then Williams, have to own like 10 of those. Gottlieb...JP, Genie....
Stop the insanity...Stop...
I'm going to have to get an old school stern at some point. They look really cool and they play crazy fast.
Besides the awesome EBD I like Farfalla (Zaccaria), Seawitch and Joker Poker. Yes, I am a fan of drop targets.
They are hard to find but typically reasonably priced if you do.
Quoted from littlecammi:That's a pretty narrow price range. Can't you spend more than $1986 (or less than $1975)?
badda boom
Xenon, Firepower, EBD, Paragon, Sinbad, Wizard, Capt. Fantastic, Elektra. Have them all and waiting for a Space Invaders.
Flip flop is cool and can be had for less than $500. I finally got me a Frontier which is a great game. ebd, silverball mania, viking is on my radar.

That's because the rules state you have to always play it with one eye shut.
Quoted from jgentry:So what is the go to for early stern games?
Every single one of them are great..even the EMs. You get a bit better sounds and rules with the M-200 games, but they are all a blast to play if you like drops and spinners.
Quoted from jgentry:So what is the go to for early stern games?
Tons of good ones...but the "biggest" names are probably Meteor, Nine Ball, Quicksilver (give or take)
Quoted from jgentry:So what is the go to for early stern games?
Meteor and Big Game for me.
I have Meteor, Galaxy, Cheetah and Star Gazer. My son had a Hot Hand and I didn't care too much for that one.
May be a bit biased here, but I've owned it twice, and played it to the wood in the 80's in the arcades, but Eight Ball Deluxe with a bullet. Just is a perfect pin.
Early Sterns are great players - most of them, but not all of them. Star Gazer, Seawitch, Galaxy and Ali may be the best of them.
But the best game 1975-1986 is...
single ball Flash Gordon
multi ball Fathom
Eight Ball Deluxe, Harlem Globetrotters, Paragon or Frontier are also awesome!
And if you want something special - take a look at Defender.
I played Cyclopes at PAPA... really a shame it is impossible to get one... great fun!
Quoted from CactusJack:Meteor and Big Game for me.
Dang, when someone with 124 classic games speaks you had better listen!!
Quoted from jgentry:So what is the go to for early stern games?
I really like seawitch. Nineball, meteor, stargazer, and quicksilver are all great.
Another vote for Fathom! I'm my opinion this one stands out far more than the rest. However Space Shuttle is pretty close second. Without Space Shuttle we all might not be playing pinball right now!
Quoted from jgentry:I'm going to have to get an old school stern at some point. They look really cool and they play crazy fast.
Yes, you do. And yes, they do.
Try Lightning on for size. Great game that's flying a bit under the radar still. Hard to find in decent condition, though.
I'll second Protector's thoughts on Flash Gordon and Bally's Fathom, these two IMO are the best of the best! Out of the classic Stern's I'd have to rate Quicksilver, Seawitch and Stargazer at the top of the list.
Quoted from KHL:Out of the classic Stern's I'd have to rate Quicksilver, Seawitch and Stargazer at the top of the list.
These also fit with Fathom....highly sought after and not enough around
Quoted from Bay78:Another vote for Fathom! I'm my opinion this one stands out far more than the rest. However Space Shuttle is pretty close second. Without Space Shuttle we all might not be playing pinball right now!
Actually for 1 to 5 games I don't recommend Fathom. Maybe in a 15 to 20 game collection.
Quoted from jgentry:I like the look of Seawitch a lot. Just haven't had a chance to play one yet.
Seawitch rules!
Quoted from jgentry:I like the look of Seawitch a lot. Just haven't had a chance to play one yet.
Brutal fast! Lots of drop target and spinner fun.
The benefit of Seawitch is pretty reasonable to find. The production numbers don't represent population because of those made in Australia. Only game. probably not. Seawitch with a few others like Fathon and Stingray. Thats a great seaside line up right there. Have all 3 and they are fantastic.
Quoted from fireball2:Seawitch rules!
I second this....very fast and hitting that spinner is just the coolest. Was introduced to this game about 12 years ago On a trip out to Texas...thanks Bill if your on here.
Quoted from jgentry:So what is the go to for early stern games?
I like Seawitch the best.
Quoted from jgentry:I like the look of Seawitch a lot. Just haven't had a chance to play one yet.
I have one and love it. During pinball parties at my home it is one of the most played machines. Hard to find, not that many survived and those that did are often in poor condition.
Mine has a nice playfield but was a project otherwise.

No problem. glad you were able to get one yourself. Love those classic sterns!!......i.e STERN JUNK
Time to bring back some Bally love while everyone else squabbles about MG, stern playfields, tbl, etc.
FG is coming home with me from TPF, the others are in the house being enjoyed. Medusa has left the building but the others are still holding strong against modern games.
Quoted from jgentry:All of this EBD love makes me extra excited to get my back from restoration.
Congrats on the numerous quality game additions to your lineup jgentry!
EBD is the latest addition to my collection and my only early Bally solid state other than a Strikes & Spares awaiting restoration. I'm really enjoying all of EBD's classic distinctive features and it has ignited a new desire in me to acquire some other same year Ballys - primarily Fathom and Centaur.
