Hi All,

Been lurking here a long time. Looking to buy my first machine early next year.

What do you think is the best DMD machine for less than 3k? Perhaps FishTales?

Thanks,
Jason

My vote is World Poker Tour.

You must like drop targets in your games, and like the classics.
If you do, this is the perfect DMD pin to grab.

Go to a show and play a bunch of games and decide for yourself. Judge Dredd or Terminator 3 would get my vote

Fish Tales is good. Flintstones is good.

Shadow if you can find one; they've crept up in price quite a bit.

High Roller Casino is good, can't recommend Shadow - playfield feels so tight on that game???

Black Rose is nice looking and playing pin for well under 3k...

Dont think Shadow is a great first game. hard to service and just a hard game in general...

It's really worth or selling for under 3K? I just played this for the first time last week and liked it a lot but thought "It'll be just like TOTAN, AFM, and MM. I like it and end up looking at the price and get shocked that it's way out of my price range"

Jason, instead of us throwing out a bunch of pins you can buy for under 3k, why don't you tell us what games you have played/enjoyed, and what you think you like in a machine when you play it?

Paid between 2000-2500 for mine.

Yeah, BR on a good day might hit 2k.

Where is Neo?

Too many to list.

Very subjective question. There are a lot of good options, you will just have to see what is available close to you. some that come to mind: The Shadow, World Cup Soccer, Judge Dredd, Fish Tales, Terminator 2, The Getaway: High Speed II, Road Show, Jurassic Park, Stargate just to name a few.

#17 5 years ago

I really like Judge Dredd, Demolition Man, Diner and Bram Stokers Dracula. Ripley's Believe it or Not is great if you can find one under 3k. You really have to play them though because they all have totally different feels to them.

Getaway is a fun Steve Richie pin that can be had for well below 3k, but condition is important in this game to play fun, diverter, ramp, locks must all work and PF should not be beat. Don't rule out Data East DMD games like Jurassic Park either. Lot of fun for the money.

There is a lot of great games already mentioned, many for much less or even half of your 3k budget. Get two for 3k

Shadow is an awesome first game. It was mine, and I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. Yes, it's a hard and challenging game, but not in a frustrating way, it just means that you've got to learn to play, and it doesn't get old quickly. In fact, if it gets old I have yet to discover it, I still come back to play it regularly.

I'd call Shadow the best game under $3k period.

I can only recommend the two sub $3000 pins that I have: Demolition Man and Apollo 13. Both are fun to play. Apollo 13 has the advantage of being a space theme, which apparently everyone likes. I found a STTNG a couple of years ago for $3100. If you can find one in that range, I think it will blow away most of the pins for under $3000.

All my shit was quite a bit less than 3 grand(actually 2 is the most Iv'e spent on any single game) and it really depends on your mood at the time your playing. Most times I go to BSD but really they are all great fun. Look at Sega and Gottlieb pins and play them, if you like them they are all priced under 3 and are a lot of fun. Dont worry about what others like buy what you like!

Do you like mode based games or just shoot em up games?

Personally, I can't recommend Batman Forever enough. Gorgeous playfield, widebody (really does add a wow factor), cool toys, and it will kick your butt but make you a better player. Also, very nice examples are less than $3K and if you're lucky, you might find one closer to $2K.

There's a plethora (El Juapo reference) of great games for under $3K so you need to try as many as you can find to see what you like.

For me personally, there are so many great games for under that price point, that I don't see myself in the future dropping more than that. Things may change, but there are so many and I want them all!!

Oh, ebay pricing is outrageous so don't overpay for your game. Also, remember that retailers are in it to make a profit and there is usually quite a bit of markup on their games as well.

No ones mentioned Starship Troopers? Awesome theme and can be had for around 2k or less. Not bad

I wish I lived up there, in the AZ market that possible 2K would be doubled here.

Tales from the Crypt is my favorite themed game for under 3K, liking the show and comics helps a lot. Its a Data East, but all that really means is that its a quality game that most collectors don't desire, hence its below 3K.

World Poker Tour is insanely fun and at the last show it was the game I fell in love with. I played all of the top titles there and I really feel like this one held its own with any of them. It helps if you know poker, if you don't, you should - it's a great game. But the flow is outstanding and the ruleset is deep. It reminds me of T2 with a brain. I just bought my first and it was a touch over $3k but as soon as I paid another one showed up in my backyard for $2500. I think the price is rising on this one as more people discover the gem that it is.

Well I wouldnt recommend it for a first pin for a new player. That is more where I was going with it. Still hard as hell to work on

#32 5 years ago

A lot of it does depend on what you can find in your area and what style you like. I agree with Jurassic Park since it was my first pin, and our family/friends also really enjoy Frankenstein, Stargate, RFM, and Flintstones too... all under $3K. If you can find one, I'd highly recommend No Good Gofers. I got mine for $2800, but it is in the same condition as one that just sold for over $4000, so I don't know what the current market is.

Ditto. I hadn't played a ton of pinball when I bought my Shadow (and remain a pretty bad player) yet 5 months in I continue to find it challenging in an enjoyable way, not frustrating.

Having said that, OP would need to consider his audience before buying The Shadow (or any game, really). If you hope to have lots of kids and non-pinball folks playing the game, you may want to buy a relatively easy game where beginners can routinely get long ball times, and that would not be The Shadow.

I'll throw junkyard into the mix too

#36 5 years ago

I know it doesn't get much love, but I think Jackbot is a great pin that can be had for < $2k.

#37 5 years ago

Doctor who is also a good choice

#38 5 years ago

I'll have to echo TS. It's a pretty freakin awesome game in the 3k range with a bunch of cool shots. It was the first game that I fully shopped out topside and it really wasn't all that difficult to figure out especially with youtube videos and pinside. I'm a long way from being bored with it.

apollo13 is good, but shots are tight and tough. not for a first pin imo.

Fish Tales
Road show
Getaway

Great games that could be under 3K if you can find them for that price anymore:
Shadow
Start Trek TNG
Wheel of Fortune

#43 5 years ago

The Shadow
Congo
Getaway
Terminator 2
Demolition Man
Fish Tales
Ripleys
Roadshow
World Cup Soccer
Tales from the Crypt
Tommy

Really, it's about the game you want to play. If you want to play it... +/- 3K, go play it.

Not a DMD deck, but if you can find a sweet Funhouse for under 3K, I'd go after it like there is no tomorrow.

Happy hunting!

#44 5 years ago

With 3k you got a lot of latitude, but for under 2k I'd pick DM, JD and for a little more JM. FT definitely is a good pick for sub 2.5k. Rbion is also a bargain if you can get it for 3k and under.
