Curious about this, especially ones that somehow interact with the game: what's the best animated backglass in your opinion? I'm guessing the answer lies in the EM world, but there are some good SS backglasses like T3 and CV that did stuff.

Just remembered Flipper Cowboy is pretty cool

When it comes to backglass animation, Gottlieb EMs rule. That was the "attract mode" of the day.

The dropping cards on King of Diamonds is a good touch.

Among the classic modern games I´d put Catacomb and Banzai Run on split 1st place.

On the EM-field there are just too many great 60-70's Gottlieb to choose from. I agree with the vote on Central Park. Williams had a few really cool ones, Blast off comes to mind.

SI was simple but eye catching.

When animated bg is mentioned, for me, Cowpoke always comes to mind,
but here's a couple that might not be named. Maybe not the best, but those
balls on All-the-Way are not only popping, their the entire object of the games
scoring. Oh yes, and that arrow being the 2nd animation on this machine is
also a big factor in the games play..
Maybe a little off topic, but Time Trials is probably the best playfield animation
    in the collection..

Not saying its the best or even should be ranked up there.
But, I always thought Cosmos had a cool little orbit feature on the backglass. Not the coolest. Just thought worth mentioning.

I really like Rocky & Bullwinkle and Friends backglass though, because it has 3 different animals to pull out of the hat and they correspond to the DMD and so its a little bit of variation.
And of course Scared Stiff Spider Wheel is really awesome. Anything that gets you to stop what you are doing and be able to take in the amazing backglass art for Scared Stiff is alright with me.

Spirit and Star Trek 25th anniversary.

    #19 2 years ago

I’d have to go with Scared Stiff because you interact with it and really like the art.

Title Fight and Lights camera Action

Sadly I'd say the backglass is the best part of that game!

WOW! You have some rad games

    #24 2 years ago

    This is pretty cool.

    Gottlieb's 1950 Mermaid.

Animated backglass shown about 3/4 through video.

    Can't think of anything better?

This game has always sold for huge $$$!

I think the fun and excitement of Nags is hard to beat.

    No love for Circus Voltaire?

I also think scared stiff is the best

Kinda related....Automata. I used to collect some old clockwork French pieces, but related to Pinball, I met Paul Spooner in Covent Gardens, England in 1985, at his exhibit store. We had a spirited conversation, and I related Gottlieb Pinballs, and their animation. He loved pinball, and in playing as a youth, he stated,
"I never thought of Pinball as an early influence on my going into this career!"

Hes regarded as one of this generations best.
Today, with 3D printing of Gears in Place, Im a bit surprised we dont see more in general,
as well as in a game...

Heres a quick vid on him, there are many, and his home kits are a blast to build with the kids.

Space invaders and Xenon. Both eye catching and a great way to attract players on location.

Actually, not exactly a bowler, but something way different than any other game to really
compare it to. A while back I meant to take a video of it being played. Will have to before
long.. There's some rolling balls on World Series, but they don't pop as they do while playing
    All-the-Way..

Gottliebs Soccer has a great integrated bg and is fun to play to boot. Hayburners 2 is also another good one as far as the bg goes, play isn't great but full size zipper flippers are a fun gimmick.

    Title Fight
Williams Heat Wave (which had the thermometer way before C37 and is a way better game)

Ah you're just jealous that I have a C37 and won't sell it to you cheap!

Bank-a-Ball has both lights and physical pool balls that drop down in the backglass.

    #38 2 years ago

Ice Fever has a unique interactive backglass.

Once again stumbled upon this thread. Running out of machines that's set up with bg animation,
but Peppy itself I guess is animated. Thought I'd try bringing back this thread to see what other
different animation may be out there..

I always thought it would be fun to have a tournament with a number of the Animated backglass games...

    -Central Park
    -Catacomb
    -Black Hole
    -Title Fight
    -Pistol Poker
    -Lights Camera Action
    -Cyclone
    -Rocky and Bullwinkle
    -Banzai Run
    -Bad Cats
    -Scared Stiff
-The Pinball Circus (if you could find one)

I think it’s next to impossible to beat. Banzai Run IMO. How about The Pinball Circus, would that count?

I used to own a CV and I can’t tell you exactly how it worked from memory.

My votes are for Big Guns and Safe Cracker
