That's how I understand things: if it's just numeric scores on the display, there's no "alpha" involved.
I figure Alphanumerics can provide more clarity and information to the player, and whether such was the intent or not, gameplay enhancements resulted leading to a different class of game. Otherwise the displays themselves would be unnecessary overkill...
