I’m welding 3/8” rebar to 3/8” rebar. Standard 25/75 mix gas.

I’m holding the pieces to my welding table with magnets.

The welds get immediate oxidation. And I’m getting smoke in the air. There's plenty of gas flowing out of the nozzle. Turning it up doesn’t fix it.

Why am I getting the oxidation?

what kind of wire are you using? did you use flux core in the past and the spool is still in the machine? is the machine set reverse polarity for flux core? clean the rebar with acetone and try again.

How clean is the "rebar"
Is it galvanized by chance.
As above pictures can help alot.

Can you show us a picture of the part you welded. If it's galvanized you will see a lot of smoke and a white crust will form where you put the heat. If it is galvanized be sure to drink some milk before welding.

Metal fume fever from welding zinc is very real. Drinking milk to prevent/treat is an old wives tail.

I won't weld anything galvanized with out PAPR that stuff is nasty. Maybe flux core outdoors with a breeze.

Standard cheap rebar from Home Depot. No idea what's in it.

Spool wire is mig wire from harbor freight. Never have used flux wire.

Too late for pics, sorry. Already painted it. Was just making a rectangle as a base for a Halloween prop.

Now, rebar isn’t exactly flat. I was keeping it down on the table with those 45 degree angle magnets. Maybe the material wasn’t making good enough connection with the table / ground? Would that do it?

Also, it was brown / rusty looking around the weld, not white.

The rebar couldn’t be galvanized— it was rusty! I removed the rust with a wire brush on my bench grinder before welding.
