So I’m hoping to finally get my 20’ x 20’ basement finished. Just wondering what’s the general opinion on insulation? It’s cinder block walls, mostly below grade. I’m getting 2 schools of thought from contractors. Some say it’s not needed. What do you guys think? Is it needed and if so what type? Foam board, spray, fiberglass? I don’t have any water issues but I do have one area that has some chalky looking appearance along the bottom of the cinder blocks. Any opinions welcomed please.

Thanks guys. I think the only reason the basement gets cold in the winter now is because of the lousy window in the crawl space. The crawl space connects into the basement. It’s a little better now that I’ve taped up the drafty window.

    Quoted from TheLaw:

I did foam board in mine. Its too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, I wouldn't do it again

That’s interesting. Any idea why it’s like that?
