Hi gang I really need your help! I am working on a Williams System 7 Barracora game for my friend. Lots of stuff it needed to get back to life and so far so good except the flippers. I can’t get flippers to work no matter what I do. Here is where I’ve been:

Completely working power supply board. All voltages are correct.
New Swemmer mpu. Boots up with the . And everything now works on the game except flippers
New cabinet switches
Cleaned EOS switches on flippers
Coils were fried before I got to this game. Replaced both sides with new SFL19-400/30 750 coils.
I have 35.2 VDC on both flippers (and all coils)
Flipper relay on driver board DOES click when I start up test mode.
Re-flowed solder joints in flipper coil on driver board

I tried to ground the 1 and 2 pin on 2J12 with the connector off. Coils will not fire
Coils will not fire when trying to ground with alligator clip wire connected to cabinet ground
I Installed an extra ground braid connected to the driver board to make sure I had complete ground

I am attaching pics of coil and EOS switch wiring to make sure I have that correct.

I’m stumped. Any ideas?

Thanks! Ed

A question I just thought of: could it possibly be my flipper roms need to be replaced?

Quoted from ezed123:

A question I just thought of: could it possibly be my flipper roms need to be replaced?

Nope.

Flipper rom does not refer to anything flipper related other than that it's a pinball rom ie intended for a game that happens to have flippers.
Your game wouldn't boot if the rom was bad.

If they aren't firing with voltage at the lugs you have it either wired wrong or the coil is defective when you manually ground it. You sure your end of stroke switches are clean new ones sometimes aren't.

EOS switches are not new. I cleaned and adjusted both but neither flipper works. I would think that they both wouldn’t need to be replaced? Especially if cleaned and adjusted? anything else I can try?

Can you tell by my pics if I have the coils wired correctly? The only thing I can say is:

The F4 flipper fuse does not blow with the wiring in my pics
When I press the flipper buttons, the lights all slightly dim but the flippers do not fire

Can someone please post a few good pics of the correct flipper wiring so I can make sure I have my connections correct? Actually any Williams game from that era that has 2 flippers with FL19-400/30 750 flipper coils. Maybe a Blackout

In order to verify your wiring, we'll need to see the other side of the coils, where the diodes are located.

Here are 2 pics of the left flipper coil wiring. Top and underside views. Please let me know if this is correct.
I have also included a pic of the cabinet switch for the left flipper to make sure that is correct.

Thanks! Ed

I think the wiring looks correct.

You can try using an alligator jumper to briefly ground the middle lug of either flipper coil and it should fire. Grounding the non-banded lug on the flipper coils should also fire them. *Don't ground the banded/power side of the coil, it will blow the fuse for the flipper circuit*

That may help us narrow things down further.

Thanks so much for the help frunch I just read through the entire “Flipper Diagnostics” section. I will plod through the progressions and report back what is happening.

Ok I’ve cleared every situation on the attached. I’ve tried 3 different driver boards. Nothing…..
I don’t know how what else to do

I've been down the same road, and if you've tried everything on that list--what fixed a similar issue on another system 7 game i was working on: replace connector 3J3 on the power supply, male pins and female connector. Fingers crossed, that'll get you back in business. Good luck, keep us posted!

#13 1 year ago

SOLVED! Ok frunch you were right on the money! I repinned the connector 3J3 and hoped that would be good. No dice. Then I took the PSB off and inspected the 3J3 header. Nothing looked obvious but I re flowed the solder on all the pins and shazzzzam! Flippers work and I’m back in business.

Thanks so much for all your help. This is a great group!

Nice!! I was hoping that would fix it, because I was out of ideas after that, lol! In my experience I found replacing the header pins to be the best course of action long-term. In fact, I found a noticeable amount more power from the flippers after replacing the headers. Might be worth considering, though it sounds like you might be good to go with a simple reflow.

Good work!

#15 1 year ago

I think I will do that @frunch. And YES I did notice my DVC went up to 36.8 after the reflow

#16 1 year ago

I'm curious to see if you notice any further improvement with new headers.

It's funny, you went down pretty much the exact same diagnostic path I had taken a few years back helping my buddy out with the flippers on his newly-acquired Black Knight. After trying everything on that list and coming up empty-handed, I finally tried replacing 3J3 and that fixed it. I had been focused completely on the ground side of the equation because I was getting proper voltage readings on my meter and could get the coils to fire by grounding them directly.

When I got home that day, I pulled the power supply board from my own Black Knight and discovered 3J3 had dull looking pins at positions 4+5 (voltage supplies to the left and right flippers) ...after re-pinning that connector I finally feel the game has the flipper power it was supposed to have all along. Previously, I'd messed with EOS adjustments, new cabinet and EOS switches, flipper rebuilds, and anything I could do to improve the flipper power...but once I replaced the headers at 3J3 it was all finally working properly.
