Quoted from Snailman:That makes no sense (city council not allowing them to open but for a few weekends per year). But then again… politics and people. Sigh. Such a shame. Glad I got to visit it once in 2020 for INDISC. I was hoping for many more.
I was under the impression that the place would be open, to the public, at least once
every two months and then with some special, yearly style, venue celebration.
This reminds me of a guy that is in the oil busyness, he opened a few arcades as a tax write off...
After a few years, the arcades made a profit so he closed them.
What is sad, is that there are many abandon units in malls that could house
parts of the collection. e.g. Sears unit; empty.
Quoted from bob_e:Why not sell off a bunch and get it down to a more manageable size like 400 +/-. Buy or lease space in a pinball friendly city?
That is what a lot of pin enthusiasts have been wanting.
Quoted from vicjw66:I might go to pick up an em or two, but the damn internet bidding and outrageous buyers premium rate increases on top of CA sales tax have ruined auctions for bargain hunters.
Ding,Ding,Ding!!!!
Quoted from vicjw66:I never understood why I should be paying sales tax on captains’ commission.
Many years ago I ordered a toy from Sears because they where out of stock.
They charged sales tax on the shipping... I never ordered a thing from them again.
Quoted from Reality_Studio:Honestly I feel the same way for most of the uber rare games. I tried many of them at the museum and while they were interesting, it's rare that I'd ever want to actually own one. Like I played Cyclopes, Spirit, Varkon, etc and was like ok, cool but I don't need to own them. There's always exceptions of course like the Defender pin was great, and one other one I won't mention since I intend to bid on it
I operated those games back in the day... The patrons would play for about a week and that was it.
The games never made any money.
Quoted from Aurich:Varkon is the most boring "pinball" I've ever played in my life. I didn't even bother finishing my one game I've ever put on it. What a dog.
If you want to own it because it's a rare conversation piece okay, your money. If you think it's engaging, in the slightest, I boo your bad taste in games!
Quoted from bob_e:Varkon was made to for the footprint of an arcade/video game. Yes the smaller playfield had a lot less to offer.
The few survived ended up with museums of serious collectors.
I have play Varkon at the Ann Arbor Pinball Museum several times.
Had one; made very little money...Aurich is correct... people played the game a few times and that is it.
Quoted from JWE:Joust, Just insane.
I'll take one green screen for $5,000.
It's time to play Video Jeopardy.
Quoted from Azmodeus:Saw that and said. Hmm. Never seen that before.
The best part was trying to get the game to produce swear words.
I have come to realize that game auctions, at highly recognizable vendors, get over inflated prices.
G.A.M.E.S. auction in LA was no different.
Gene once said to the tone of
"Play Meter wanted the column to be lighter and nicer or else it may be canceled".
I think he was giving his honest opinion on stuff that got too negative.
Quoted from Knxwledge:If all the noobs and whales with no concept of what things are worth bid on the games, maybe the parts will go cheap... or maybe the east coast guys who rented trucks will bid them up because they're pissed they didnt get any games lol
That is what I am fearing.
Quoted from Knxwledge:Hmm something I just realized though... if they rented trucks and drove out here, are they gonna risk waiting 2 weeks (paying for a hotel/Airbnb) for the next round? Sunk cost fallacy might come into play
Ones might have connections here.
I guy does custom shows...
has friends that let him sleep on the couch in the area the shows are at...
cuts a lot of costs.
Quoted from Knxwledge:Still, jerking around for 2 weeks in the hopes that they can snag parts/games to justify a weekend + gas + truck rental + time getting there? Dunno, we will have to wait and see
True.
Quoted from RobT:It's worse than that Bob.
What about all the pins that were either donated to MoP for free, or at greatly reduced rates by people who thought they were doing a good deed for the pinball community?
What a racket.
I remember the "Go Fund Me" that was used to get the MOP stated.
I think there should be a complete refund.
Quoted from Knxwledge:OOF got a link??
No... The video has John and some guy go and find a Bally Dixieland.
Quoted from flynnibus:Not GoFundMe... kickerstarter... that didn't fund
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/museumofpinball/worlds-largest-museum-of-pinball-help-us-launch
O.K. thank you... the joys of being dyslexic...
Quoted from xsvtoys:Nice, desirable machines, but those prices seem a bit extreme.
That is why there's California Extreme.
Quoted from alexmogil:I just wanted to say U-Boat 65 in this thread so it would be mentioned in searches.
Also worth mentioning is there's probably no possible way you'll get this one running again so happy $2700 spent!
It looks like it was made with Premier/Gottlieb parts.
Quoted from pinwiztom:Again did anyone ever find out whose collection these games came from?
This is what I am curious about.
Quoted from D-Gottlieb:I would not be surprised if a lot of these were Banning machines being unloaded by the previous purchasers trying to recoup.
Good point.
Quoted from Heretic_9:I wonder what became of Morphy ?
I also wonder what happened to Super Auctions... They did a lot of coin op games
many years ago.
