Quoted from Coindork:

No, not the exact machine I played when I was a kid.
The bowling alley by my house had a Depthcharge.
Effectively the same game, but in a SEGA Gremlin cabinet (same cabinet as Frogger but white).
Sub Hunter was the European version of this game licensed to Taito.
If you look at the coin door, the coin eject buttons are denominated in British Pence.
The American version was basically just a white Frogger cabinet with a little bit of graphics on it.
They went all out graphically on the Euro version, which is one of the things that makes it special
The second variation is that the Euro version uses a two way mirror that reflects a color background (Similar to Varkon, Space Invaders, EM shooting games etc.)
It looks like a color game, but is not.
The American version only had a blue gel overlay to make the black and white monitor "look like the ocean".
The Euro version took it to another level.
Anyhow, my main arcade collecting interest is pre golden era black and white game from the "bronze age of arcades".
I have about 40 different games from this era including things like Atari Pong, Sky Diver, Death Race etc.
This was a real gem to add to the collection and one where I friggin adore the gameplay to boot.
If ZapCon happens again you will see this machine at the show,
My buddy Paul (one of the show organizers) has asked my to do a black and white game exhibit when the show opens back up and I'm really looking forward to that.

Great insight CD.

Never played Depthcharge (least I recall) but played a Atari Destroyer (similar play) at our local roller rink bitd

This is like deja Vu with the classic car market. Rich dudes reliving their childhoods, come in and ruin the market for the average Joe. Wonder what's next?

Become a rich dude. Problem solved

Thanks for posting the hammer prices. Does anyone how much more to add for fees and taxes? For some of these probably a few thousand more in fees and taxes!

Add about 25% to hammer. Shipping extra.

That Domino Man price is absolutely mind blowing

#4057 2 years ago

So $17,000 for STTNG, $12000 for a T2 and $5,400 for a Hurricane, when adding 25% to the hammer price. Wow! I sure hope whoever bought these doesn't ever discover Pinside Market place, otherwise we are all doomed.

Let's see, Day 5...

Mark of the Day: Bidder 6464 Picks up Stern Indiana Jones for about $12,000 otd. Another case of referencing price of the wrong machine perhaps?

Big Cheese of the Day: Bidder 1953 spends a bundle on only 2 machines: picks up IJPA and MM for about $38,000 otd.

Deal of the Day (I didn't get fleeced too badly): Hobbit Black Arrow at about $10,000 otd? There's probably some others...

The other machine, besides Transporter, that I noticed was in unusually nice condition was the Stern NBA. $9,000 is a lot, but at least that one is what most are probably expecting of "museum quality."

Much like the news, better to just shut this off and do your weekend thing since it's going to cause more stress than not. Ain't helping the hobby (nor future purchases) if this does infect the reality of things. Realize it's a unique situation, but you can bank on most who do watch / read the news to point to this and the cost of their collection.

I'll be using the banning results as my basis for replacement insurance purposes.

Quoted from vicjw66:

You would have to divvy it up just to transport it. But really it’s just a bunch of mirrored balls that they sell at Michael’s arts and crafts for a few bucks a piece. I don’t see any value in it. If it had sentimental value, then Mr. Weeks would have taken it with him.

So, that's definitely a current off-the-shelf item at Michael's ?

That Transporter used to be mine. The PF had very minimal wear, was touched up and clearcoated. Played fast. One new ramp was installed and i believe there is another in the cab unless someone removed it.

$20k hammer so $25k for the wall of balls which is by far the craziest price of any thing that has sold there! If your handy you can easily make that for under $1000.

Yeah, Hercules went for less than that... Hmmm maybe it was the same buyer and they thought it was spare balls?

Does anyone who worked at MOP know: Was there any decent stock left on the gift shop items, like various T-shirts ? (I've got the hat, don't need another.) If so, are they to be sold off, and when ?

"it needs some fine tuning!"

Only Captain can say "it's fucked" in a way that gets people hyped and spending more money!

I saw it there maybe a year ago. I immediately thought of the MOP. I was with my wife when she had to pick up some junk. That’s what Michael’s and Hobby Lobby sell, junk. I don’t frequent these stores, but I’m sure you can find these somewhere with a little Google search. I’m absolutely shocked someone paid over $20k for that thing. More shocked than the price that Spyhunter went for. I bought a Spyhunter at auction with power supply issue for $80 about 15 years ago.

6k for a computer space seems like a deal, how much more than "just a monitor" did it need?

As I remember they used TVs not monitors.

If i recall right, the TV has some custom wiring making a TV conversion not easy.. And the flybacks are all falling apart with age.

Correct.
There’s a specific model of Zenith that they use and it really needs to be correct to command the money.
I have a Red Computer Space.
It’s a trip because it’s legit an old TV with vaccine tubes etc.

Did it still have the coffee can inside for coin drop?

That’s the only thing mines missing is the coin bucket.
It’s actually not a coffee can.
The coin buckets were the paint/lacquer cans left over from gel coating the cabinet and they repurposed them as the coin bucket.

Atari Pong uses a bread pan for baking a loaf of bread.

Maneater $21,600, how rare are these?

#4077 2 years ago

Maneater got bid up between buyer 1660 and 118, before eventually being bought by 1660 (no surprise) at $21,600

#4078 2 years ago

Anyone know who or what entity is represented by bidder 1660?? Deeeeeeeep pockets……!!

I enjoyed that little bit of history, thanks for sharing

That Transporter used to be mine. The PF had very minimal wear, was touched up and clearcoated. Played fast. One new ramp was installed and i believe there is another in the cab unless someone removed it.

Nice, one of the few machines I thought went for a not unreasonable price. Did you sell it to John? For how much? I would have found that hard to let go!

Unlike how he is saying so many are rare, Maneater actually is, is it 21k+ rare, no, but we all know that these games are bringing far more than they should.

Not sure, but I remember one sitting on eBay at $600 for awhile in the early 2000s. I should have bought it. It’s actually uncomfortable to play because the teeth don’t allow you to rest your arms on the control panel.

This era of video games is fascinating.
Keep in mind that this is the very beginning and there weren’t things like commercial crt monitors and other standard parts like you had in the later years.
Atari and Nutting were legitimately going into department stores and hardware stores to buy parts to build these games.
It’s a trip.

That’s really cool! My Taito Japanese Space Invaders uses an old black & white TV set with the whole tubes and stuff. I took one look in there and decided that since it’s very bright and clean I’m not gonna mess with it.
Didn’t know it was an actually TV till an arcade collector friend told me.

In the age of live stream twitch, why does captain have such a crappy video stream?

Quoted from Asmig:

It’s pretty rare.
People like to lump it into the same category as Computer Space because of the unique fiberglass cabinet.
There’s really only a handful of games that used this method of cabinet manufacture (Computer Space, 2 player Computer Space, Space Race and Maneater).
Maneater was basically capitalizing of the Jaws craze and there were several shark themed games that came out when Jaws was big.

There was a Maneater up on eBay about a year or so ago and it basically just sat there at 10k OBO.
It worked and was in nice shape, but someone had painted blood all over the teeth and painted gills and eyes on it. There was some speculation as to if the paint could be removed without messing up the gel coating on the cabinet. In retrospect it was probably an ok deal.

LTG : )

Lol, yep.
I have a Death Race as well as the PG version Destruction Derby.
A lot of the metal parts on those games like the shifters and pedals were just raw steel that they cut and welded to make work.
At least the steering wheels on early game like that are easy to replace because they used legit steering wheels from the car hobby and you can still buy them.

Sort of.
Computer Space wars was the first video game ever made.
This is a version of it ported to an arcade game.

Pretty sure the first computerized game with a screen is Tennis for Two. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_for_Two

That Domino Man price is absolutely mind blowing

I bough my Domino Man from Captain 3 or 4 years ago.
I think I paid $3400 for it and people thought I was nuts.
I bought it for my wife because Timber and Tapper are her favorite games and Domino man is the third game in that series.
It’s rare as hell and every known Domino Man is in a converted Lazarian cabinet. If you pull the dominos off the front, it has mint Lazarian artwork underneath. Also the side art is laid right over Lazarian art.
I guess Lazarian was a commercial failure and they converted them all at the factory. I’ve looked at 5 different Domino Mans and they are all like that.
It’s legit a rare game and impossible to fully restore because you can’t get the domino kick plate.

Anyhow, long story short my wife didn’t like the gameplay because its so different than Timber of Tapper.
My buddy Derek was interested in it, so I gave it to him and told him that he needs to come up to the property after summer and it cools off to help me build a chicken coup.
I called him last night and told him what the game sold for and reminded him he still owes me a chicken coup. Lol

I heard from family of a couple of bidders, or their proxy.
From Family, there is a bidder in UAE, with more than enough new money, newer money, but political and economic family position, was suppose to be filling a container.
I have heard of 2 in the Entertainment field. Grapevine talk from the "Hollywood scene" (They were into the licensed Pin Titles.
And One in the DC area, a friend of my nephew, he picked up a few vids.

That happens a lot. I had a Sega sit down enduro racer. The side art was decals stuck right over xevious art work.

Interesting.
Yeah, I guess that predates Space Wars by a couple years.
FWIW, there’s even a few documentaries that credit Space Wars as being the first video game.
Tennis definitely predates that.

Actually I took it to Captains a couple of years ago and John won the bid. I dont think it was too far off from what it sold for in this auction.

As far as being able to let it go, even after the work that was done to it, I just didnt think it had enough staying power for me. I didnt expect to ever own one but it popped up local for a nice price and had to have it. Love the theme and am proud to have owned it, but there were other games I wanted with limited space.
