Are there any JJP pins coming up?
The very sad part for me about all this is simply what it means for the likely further death of this arcade resurgence. I knew it was coming anyway, sooner or later, but when you have a choice between losing money because not enough people come thru your door, and auctioning off the assets at 3X what you paid, the choice is fairly easy.
My arcade is lucky if it surpasses $2K revenue a week. That’s basically no profit after the rent, utilities, labor, insurance, and game upkeep. Fast Draw that we paid $400 for and one of our volunteers put 60 hours into refurbishing sold for $3500 at Banning and no doubt ours is nicer than theirs. I keep the arcade not because it pays anything financially to do so but because it is my attempt to try to create nice things for people to partake in in my city.
People will tell you what they think they want, but their behavior is something else entirely. They’ll say we want more open space, we want more kids activities, we want some aspect of nostalgia (arcade being one of those). Instead we mostly shop at Walmart and Amazon and whatever pre fab mall comes next. And instead of frequenting a local arcade, we overpay for nice shiny in our home that many of these Banning buyers will have sit unplayed.
Arcades are not financially viable except for those for whom it’s ok to just stay head above water. I am not lamenting this, it’s just life. But I am disappointed in it all the same.
The very fact that MOP got more coverage in closing than it ever did in being open tells you everything you need to know about what is wrong with this industry.
Well, hopes crushed on Doctor Who. I don't remember seeing the "potential prototype" in the description. To me, that doesn't add value to me, but I see color display as well since I know those had monochrome. Do they all have diamond plate on them too? This is just a game I want in the collection, but the price it went for was 8k and they didn't even give the $500 increments to drop down to +$100 before they sold it. They could have milked a few hundred more out of it or get people +100 on it back and forth.

Arcades are stronger than ever and there are more of them with more classic titles than there have ever been.
Quoted from Ericpinballfan:PHEW, we made it gang. We will see Monday.
For a moment thought this auction might be one of the signs of the apocalypse.
Quoted from lifefloat:Under 8K
the sun will rise tomorrow
Quoted from Ericpinballfan:I just want to let everyone know....
If Popeye sells for more than 8 Thousand.
The End Of The World Is Near.
If my math is right, Popeye after taxes and fees (NOT including freight) was
$7,670.75
Factoring in shipping costs... definitely final price above $8k
Quoted from Code_Blue:Arcades are stronger than ever and there are more of them with more classic titles than there have ever been.
Right? The key to success is to also sell high profit margin items like drinks, snacks, or other products like T-Shirts.

The moving topper is something you should research. It was not the same as a common Dr. Who.
Quoted from mtpbr57:What's the record for most games sold in a row for over $10K - I think that record is going to get broken coming up here?
Here we go...

Watch "The Lost Arcade" on Amazon streaming. It at least goes through the cycle of how old school coin ops lose profit but the new things is moving more towards those ticket/gambling based games that just get people pumping hundreds of dollars to get a $12 stuffed animal. Then you can off-set by putting in some coin op games and pinball that get whales paying the way with the cash cow games.

This is debatable.
My arcade is doing rather well.
But, I guess it can depend on what you call an "arcade". If it has to be all classic, then I don't know that those work any more.

Cranes and coin pushers

Yep, games that are designed even more so for making profit for the operator vs entertainment for the player and rely on the dopamine effect for that gambling hook.
Watching the high prices roll out, I have two potential theories to share.
First: Market efficiency. It’s probably true that the world lacks a market where folks can pick and choose a pinball to buy at will. eBay and Pinside and CL are worthy markets, but they all require patience, restraint, and discretion. Say what you will about the Captain, but this auction is like a Carmax for pinball buyers- you might overpay, but everything is available for a price. (Indeed, I’ve watched Captains’ auctions in the past and been shocked by the prices)
Second: I have to believe there were parties interested in buying the entire collection. Used car prices, COVID collectible prices, and pinball’s hipster renaissance all suggest that pinball prices will rise. So, the high prices on individual machines (22.5k for Addams, the most common moon of all time!!) might reflect a desire by some buyers to own significant portions of *this* collection. Imagine if a major car museum liquidated- the prices would be boosted by the cache of the museum.
All that said, sheesh…I’m just trying to rationalize this madness any way I can.
Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:Cranes and coin pushers
I have none of that stuff. Just 60 some video games and 7 pinballs. But it's a mix of newer games too
Quoted from NPO:For $22.5K, I will deliver my TAF to your door and take your money as well as a swift kick to the nuts cause I deserve it for robbing anyone like that.
Take 20k and skip the kick to nuts.
Ooooh Captain is mad one of his employees split the bid between $10k and $10.5k without his approval
Quoted from Ericpinballfan:Take 20k and skip the kick to nuts.
I'm good with that. SOLD!
Just need an address and some pain killers before I deliver to your place.
Maybe someone is looking to open a new museum here and paying stupid prices?
Problem is I hate their tastes.
Quoted from NPO:My AFM has red ramps, eyes on the martians, pinbits strobe, ColorDMD, cliffys, and a new non-Micro PF. Mine just went to like..I don't know...$15K ?
Your fault for buying such a crappy game when you should have bought the highly desired BTTF!
Quoted from Knxwledge:Ooooh Captain is mad one of his employees split the bid between $10k and $10.5k without his approval
He had to go beat that employee's ass before they could start bidding again. How DARE he make him $250 more
Quoted from Knxwledge:Ooooh Captain is mad one of his employees split the bid between $10k and $10.5k without his approval
I was wondering how the bids go from a $100 up to only $500 a pop. Who choose that. I know at some auctions you just yell out what you want to pay for it, not really what the auctioneer is trying to get for the next bid?
Because bids going $500 increments, but why not let it just inch out at $100. But Captain had a big complaint about some game last night that went to $9000 with $100 bid increments.

I can understand not wanting to start at 100 increments, but if no one goes for a 500 increment and bidding slows down, why wouldn't he start doing 100 increments? Maybe he doesn't care and just needs to speed it up
these games do look pretty minty. I mean they look well kept as opposed to the arcade games we saw yesterday.

I'm sure he's trying to speed things up. We're still working on pins that were supposed to have been sold last night.

True, they are behind schedule but they also go off on a tangent on a game trying to inch out a few hundred more on it because they likely don't like the price it's at. I'm wondering if they just have their own list of what they want games to go for, if it's above that try to end it soon but if it's not there give me the game's history in a 30 minute mini-series special.
The consistency of small talking pins for boosting a few hundred vs just stopping bids at $500 bits is where they should lower down the increments at least to $250.
It just occured to me that I know have a base price to adjust my collection for insurance purposes..Calling insurance company tomorrow.

I am really bummed I completely missed out on Super Auction. That shit sounds like the GOAT "blah blah blah SOLD", move onto the next one.
This is late dawning on me, but I'd have to plead lack of sleep:
All that prep work I did on bidding spreadsheets was just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic !
Quoted from Agent_Hero:No mention of ColorDMD on TotAN
At 14k would it even make a difference?
Quoted from Agent_Hero:No mention of ColorDMD on TotAN
Boo, colordmd adds value at this auction.
What's Captain thinking?
For $1 per game at 10 games per day, it will take 7.7 years, playing every single day, to get your $28,125 out of that Addams Family.

My first SuperAuctions here the local collectors were all buddies and let me win an Arkanoid for $80 since they knew I was trying to get started in the hobby. You think that shit would fly with all of the greed today?

100% me. I had a sheet put up, had ranges of bids, based on conditions/desire and past sales and a little "bonus" bid reserve if I was in a bid war with someone. Literally every single of of the stuff I wanted went above my absolute max prices, and most times before I could even click a bid button. I think I only got enough time to bid on a few games and that was just spamming bid at the start.
Quoted from Asmig:At 14k would it even make a difference?
Don't hate me. I see my collection today and would love some of this action.

LOL fuck no, I distinctly remember being a noob asking if I should buy some random $100 arcade game off CL and some asshole bought it, and told me he was "teaching me a lesson about the hobby". This was probably 5 years ago
