Quoted from unigroove:

Having visited the MoP several times, and taken many photos of the games in the collection, it saddens me to see what is currently going on. Hoping for a solution.
Allow me to suggest something stupid: instead of buying an existing building, isn't it cheaper to buy some land somewhere, ramp up a building or two and store the whole collection there? That would take care of the first priorities. From there you can expand and get up and running again.

I agree, cheap land in the same area is plentiful, and do a tilt up construction building. The issue is the power grid. Thats why a weed farm is leasing the existing building it at such a high value, the infrastructure is there.
The building they wanted, the old newspaper plant, had the infrastructure and the sqftage.

Quoted from flynnibus:

There is more then is being said…. Sure sounds like John Weeks isn’t willing to fund the bridge funds needed (after floating all this for years?) or they are using a crisis as an opportunity to try to plead for a new sugar daddy.

I guess I must be the only person that thinks you're getting an inordinate amount of pleasure out of finding any and all fault here? It's really, really gross. I can't imagine you ever walking up to anyone who has any love for The Museum of Pinball and saying what I quoted you saying.

I guess like your good 'ol boy Frax said, it's all irrelevant, right? You get to talk your little shit on the internet, and maybe even get in some "I told you so!"s later? Disgusting. Yuck. You're spare parts.

I bought my first issue (of what ended up being many) of Pinball Magazine from you there!

No Jerkoff - I'm saying 'please tell us what's REALLY going on...' vs taking the tidbits blindly. It's not looking to finding blame and enjoy it - it's saying "that doesn't sound right..." and explaining WHY It doesn't sound right or smells funny.

I asked you if you ever visited TMoP, you didn't feel it was worth responding to.

I don't think you give three flying shits about the place; a cursory glance at your posting history shows how much you have to be right about every single thing. You want to be the one that says "see! I told you I was right!". Offer them solutions, offer them alternatives, instead of trying to be so damn clever. Everyone is so clever nowadays.

"Jerkoff", btw? Very aggressive. So angry.

I hope they survive and find a new location. I don't think any of us know the real story (nor is it any of our business). If their capital restrained than they certainly have plenty of assets to raise cash (if needed), and possibly scale back from the 2200 games and find a smaller more affordable location.

Quoted from museumofpinball:

Friends, staff and volunteers...stay tuned for an update coming in a few weeks...and please in the meantime, try and be nice to each other.
We all share the same interest and love of pinball, so let's try and be respectful of everyone.
I understand there are a lot of questions about the future of MOP, and truly appreciate all the support, ideas and concerns. Please stay tuned.
Regardless of what the future holds for the MOP, let's be thankful for the good times we have had over the last 5+ years. All of which was made possible by the staff, fantastic and dedicated volunteers, friends and visitors and of course my father John Weeks. He has graciously shared what is probably the most epic collection in the world of pins and arcade games with thousands of people.
P.S We have not painted ourselves into any corner We paint outside the lines, always have and always will.
Thanks again and hope everyone can stay happy and healthy,
Johnathon Weeks
MOP

Gentlemen, guys, guys, guys.
See post #89, please.
We we're all lucky in the first place the Weeks family brought us this amazing collection and let us play with it.
Thank You John and Johnathon, Chuck and all the techs on both sides.

It's kinda how I feel about all your posts... thanks for reminding me. I'll do better to avoid the bait going forward.

This coming from the guy who decided to attack me on your very first post ... when you didn't even understand wtf the post even was. You reap what you sow - you bash people they aren't going to kiss your ass in return.

flynnibus not really your style to take the high road, is it bud? Wish you weren't so damn awkward.

Damn, getting biblical on a Pinball Forum! Shit's serious!

But the question remains: have you, or have you not, ever stepped foot in TMoP?

#112 2 years ago

I'm just trying to find more info on this subject. Mostly all I'm getting is the NicerSoul/Flynnibus shit show. Can't you guys just drop it for a while. You can't change each others opinion so why not just chill?

Is it even about that? NS appears to have just registered an account to be a dick, nothing more. If it bothers you, block them or report them. Simple.

Quoted from NicerSoul:

Everyone is so clever nowadays.

Bro, you are LITERALLY dancing around the line between being a troll and just an outright prick seeing how far you can push things. Let me give you a clue...I don't have to have visited a pinball location to be interested in what's happening with them, especially given the size of this particular collection. Say, for example, if it all goes tits up, the guy just says "F IT, I'M OUT." and starts selling off 2200 games. What do you think that does to the overall market? Also, I was following the thread trying to understand the situation after the news article showed up in my local FB group that made it seem like the same guy that owns the pins was going to be growing the weed. They did a TERRIBLE job of differentiating that in that article. That's why it's entirely bloody irrelevant if I've been there or not. I'm allowed to take an interest in something that's directly related to my hobby. I mean, I guess I should never plan to go to HAAG or CAX or any other convention, and not pay any attention to them since I've never been there, right?

Just how much personal shit do you have invested in this, that you felt the need to register a new account and then start attacking people right off the bat? You may as well delete that account and start over while you still can. You're going to end up as much of a pariah as I am.

Frankly, after this, I could care less what happens with these pins or if they ever find another location. If I don't have to interact with you, it's worth it to take it off the list of places I might want to visit someday. Jesus. I'm done here.

Quoted from Frax:

You're going to end up as much of a pariah as I am.

Someone from Dallas needs to check up on this poor fella. I worry about his mental health.

You seem very angry, @frax. Relax, brah, it's only pinball.

So have you been to TMoP or not? It's a very simple question, and, despite your extremely compelling arguments to the contrary, it actually is relevant in a thread about TMoP. Oh! Or wait, you're done here (and ignoring me - that's some weird behavior, isn't it? Write multiple angry paragraphs about a stranger and then ignore them?), nevermind.

Jeez, for a guy that loves Pinside so much, you'd think he'd donate. I paid my five bux, and all I'm getting is shit on!

First the collapse of PAPA, now this. At least I got out to PAPA a couple of times. I've never got out to California. Hey Chuck, any possibility this collection will come closer to the midwest?

It may, piece by piece though...

So when we gonna be able to bulk buy some of these pins? Sounds like times running out

Still nothing listed on the Captain's Auction Warehouse site....

Auction is on August 7th which is about the 2 month mark. We will see what happens when the shit hits the fan... I'm very curious.

#120 2 years ago

Given this location and # of pieces - why wouldn't you try to bring the auction to you?

Certainly has enough product and name recognition to bring in buyers. Just hire the auction company to document, promote, and execute.

What excuse am I ever going to have to eat at Gramma's Country Kitchen again??!? Best cream pies in town![quoted image]

The best place that was nearby to eat.

Whatever happens, don't let this go the way of PAPA. There were many people who would have helped out to keep PAPA/pinburgh going, and instead it was closed down without even the opportunity given for the public to help.

There are many in the pinball hobby who don't want to see us lose another public collection of this magnitude.

The owner has already asked the general public (you!) for help, and made clear the help he needs, so nothing is stopping you from doing what he's asked to help save the collection within a month. The simple and easy ways you can help are:

Quoted from chuckcasey:

1. Finding a major sponsor to assist with relocation to the old Desert Sun Newspaper building (~77,000 usable sqft)
2. Find an alternate location for MOP to operate.
3. A location to store the games until the dust settles and things change.

Well there ya go! Make it happen. Don't take too long though please time is short.

Quoted from CrazyLevi:

I'm surprised none of that has happened already, since it's a totally realistic solution to the problem and not just wishful thinking. Sounds like you actually have it figured out, thanks

Yeah, unless you went there or Wings Garden Cafe you had to go to Beumont to find any descent places to eat.

I really liked that diner across the street from the Morongo gas station but on my last trip thru there I was bummed to see it closed.

It does not appear to be the August 7th auction at Captain's.

Captain's Auction does do that, Ive seen separate auctions that are held at other locations. Be on the lookout for something like that within a month or two

Not published yet. Coming soon.

Quoted from uncivil_engineer:

We've all been hoping for this not to happen.
But Alas, it has and auction will take place.
I have not heard numbers or quantity of sale, but i know it will be large.
I respect what the Week's family created and their decisions. As much as it sucks and saddens me, all good things come to an end.
We were lucky we had it in the first place for the time we did.
I Thank the Week's family for the good times we shared.

May I ask how you know for sure? Direct contact with them? Article?

I made this video of the museum back in 2017, amazing place, sad to see it go.

I gotcha, I wasnt insinuating anything, I was just wondering if that was for sure or not.

Thats sad, partly because it has to happen in the first place, and partly because Im not in a position to buy any more projects for a while!

Did he say what has changed that has lead them to the decision? In terms of no longer floating it all?

He did not disclose anything other than what was already reported in the published articles.

When you look at past admission prices, it appears that the museum was approaching break-even at best. The new machines aren't cheap nor are taxes and other fees.

The whole situation sucks for everyone.

Sad day brotha, sad day

#144 2 years ago

Sure sounds more and more like a manufactured failure vs making a huge effort to avoid it. Like, he reached a breaking point and just stopped trying. Now there is a clear dead end forcing everything to break up.

I don't buy the 'new machines aren't cheap' angle. A place like this didn't have to buy the latest game to be a draw - it's draw is everything else

Sad to hear that they are no longer driving the vision that brought the concept to reality. Looking back when he laid out the plan for the site it was so interesting, and his sheer volume of games has always been mindboggling. And with the work put in by the community over the years it really seemed like they were on an accelerated path to a great reputation for quality too.

^^^This^^^ If I'm in a location where there are classics that actually work and are operational, I'll take them any day over the newest, latest, greatest. This situation just plain sucks.

#146 2 years ago

I don't see why the family just get some storage spaces...
They could open a smaller venue...

#147 2 years ago

The VFW (Vintage Flipper World) plans to have their 2021 showcase event on October 2nd & 3rd which has a lot of classic machines in good working condition. Hope you can make it.

I'm sure there is more to it behind the scenes we don't know about, but I would agree with not needing modern games at the museum. You can go to a lot of different places like bars and arcades (what's left of them) to play the newest pin, but very few places have classics, and even a smaller number have the sheer volume of classics that the Museum of Pinball did

One of the main problems was the Banning city council would not allow John to open more than a few weekends a year.
I don't know exactly what the council's big objection was, but part of it was the Municipal Airport across the street.
An airport that I never saw a single cesna land or take off.
Lots of red tape small town BULLSHIT.

Its actually a small miracle it lasted this long, as said above, the museum was only starting to break even toward the end in 2019.
Then the world stopped.

Cheers to John and the crew, it was magical while it lasted.

That makes no sense (city council not allowing them to open but for a few weekends per year). But then again… politics and people. Sigh. Such a shame. Glad I got to visit it once in 2020 for INDISC. I was hoping for many more.
