I am from the US originally but left 12 years ago. Costs sure have kept going up. As a contrast, we have universal care in New Zealand. I pay $60 to visit my GP (kids are free) which is expensive by NZ standards but I can usually get a same day appointment and they are really close. Anything beyond a GP visit I don't need to pay for. We buy insurance that lets us go private if needed, that comes up for elective things like a knee replacement or something not essential. That insurance is ~100 a month for a family of four. Almost anything essential (the serious stuff) is done with the public system so no direct cost, just taxes. Drugs are purchased at the national level and we don't always have the latest and greatest, particularity the 100k per year wonder drug sorts of things. $5 per prescription to a max I think of $60 a year.
I know people like to talk about how horrible 'socialised' medicine is but as someone that was in the US system with good insurance for 35 years what we have in NZ is quite acceptable. I just wonder who pockets all the cash in the US.
