Does anyone know what the self test positions 20-22 are for on 80's Bally games. For example, on Spy Hunter, after the usual 01-19 documented settings using the diagnostic button inside the coin door, there is a setting #20, with settable values from 00-15.

Elektra, Fathom, Centaur, Medusa also have settings in #20-22 range (some only go to #20, while some go as far as #22), all with settable values 00-15.

None of the manuals for these games document any settings above self test #19.

Bump...still wondering about these strange settings on some Bally games.

Quoted from vid1900:

Could be nothing.

Its doing something. I'm just not sure what. I've been looking at the coding on Spy Hunter. When disassembled, there are 3 areas of code in the game ROM that call the setting for audit 20.

So, for example, audits 16-19 are stored in battery backed RAM at $2FA-$2FD. Audit 20 (the undocumented one) is stored at $2FE. When I search the code for $02FE, I get 3 hits...all in the game ROM, and they are fairly large routines.

Quoted from cody_chunn:

Just play it safe and set them to "03"

Normally that's the best way to get all the features turned on, but these settings (settings greater than #19) cycle from 00-15.

#10 8 years ago
Quoted from cody_chunn:

Doesn't settings 18 & 19 allow values higher than "03"

No. Settings #16-19 cycle 00-03. 16, 17, and 19 refer to score/award settings, and 18 refers to sound settings.

#11 8 years ago
Quoted from MrBally:

Remote volume control depending on sound board IIRC.

Was that optional hardware you could get from Bally, or a setting that affected the stock sound board (if you can remember)?
