Documenting a deep cleaning and top side tear down of a Transporter the Rescue It will get stripped down completely on the top and rebuilt on the bottom side.

This is a very nice Mylar’d example. It will get the usual parts to rebuild all the mechs with new ramps and plastics. I’ll polish up the Mylar and clean up the non-Mylar’d area.

I’ll note some of the post and rubber sizes as this is a low production title.

Was always curious about this game, love to play one some day. Looks like lots of ball guides! Have the ramps been reproduced?

I’m with ya. I never played one and don’t remember seeing one in person. Yes the ramps are out there which is a miracle consider the under 900 machines made.

Huge thanks to Pinsider Freeplay40 for that. Made the time for it before several other more popular ramps.

Nice looking TTR!

After a good cleanup and going over, the reveal should be well worth the effort!

Cabinet looks really good! Can you confirm that cabinet and backbox were painted and not decaled? (I'm assuming painted from the factory like my TTR.) Just curious if this was the last painted machine by Bally. My Atlantis, the very next game manufactured, has factory decals on both cab and backbox.

Yes! It should clean up nice. Most of the rubbers were so hard they just broke apart but the game looks like it has been taken care of it’s entire life and not abused. There’s a few wire cut hacks on playfield and the GI connector on the interconnect but pretty typical stuff. We will fix them.

The cabinet certainly looks painted. I’ll get some close up pics shortly.

I’m retracting my painted comment. Pretty sure it’s decals. What say you?

Well, I'm wondering about that too now!

Hard to say from pictures but wherever there is a scuff or scrape on mine, it shows layers of colour underneath. I don't know if decals were made that way or whether it was painted? I know that Williams was mix and matching painted/decaled cabinet/backboxes around the time of the Bally merger, ~1989, as with Bad Cats. Maybe it's the same with other Bally/Williams games of that era?

Yes I know what you mean. I had a decaled bad cats and it was badly faded decals. This looks like decals with the layers to me.

This game will look sweet after you work through it. Looks like it has collected its share of dust over the years.

I've only played it a few times, but I was surprised it had such a low production run. I thought it was allot of fun and very unique.

The shooter rod was rebuilt using new springs, washers, tip, clip and sleeve.

Cleaning in process. You can already see what some Novus 1 will do in the last picture.

Funny things you see when you spend a lot of time in front of a bare playfield. It wasn’t so obvious at first.

Finished polishing and mylar’d areas that needed preserved. Playfield is waxed and ready for parts to dry/tumbling so they can be installed. I broke about 8-9 post studs and screws…! I heated them up but they still broke.

Still moving forward. I replaced the clutch in the Shelby so was trying to get it broken in as much as possible for our club show today. Was able to park inside the dealership showroom

Anyway, on with more tear down of the drop bank assemblies. All but 1 of the 6 drop targets are cracked. Note the degraded rubber band that was to make up for a missing rubber grommet.

Great job so far, man. I like how deep you went on the restore while keeping the playfield itself 100% original.

You mentioned some of the post studs broke. Did they have loctite on them? Having worked on a few System 11-era games, I feel your pain…. Some posts just seem destined to break no matter how much care is involved.

Thanks! Yes the thought is to preserve it especially as it’s in really nice shape other than a few wear areas near the pop bumpers.

Yep! I heated them up but you’re right. They still like to break. I always keep a stock of t nuts and studs/screws so it’s just an inconvenience. And most times you strip out the screw head anyway if it’s not a stud.

First off, this is a super cool game. Love these tear down pictures if not only to see awesome closeups of a playfield I’ll probably never get to see that close otherwise.

Second, are those plastic pop bumpers brackets? Was that a Bally thing, or just something that was being tested at the time? I’ve never noticed them on other System 11s

It’s Bally’s Thumper Bumper thing that was used on some Sys11. EATPM was my first run in with them and they make working on so much easier. I love the design.

Flipper parts (other than coil wrappers) are ready so they’re mostly assembled. This machine clearly wasn’t used hard. All parts came out really clean. Also note they were converted to WPC return spring style. The rebuild kit didn’t have the tabs or springs but I keep them on hand. Make sure to check if you’re going to convert. Usually Marco has these and the EOS screws and clip.

Supervisor was sleeping on the job.

While waiting for some parts I took care of some coin door and cabinet stuff. Coin switch covers were with machine but not installed. Also the coin mech clips were “custom” so installed the correct ones. Put on a rubber cover on the lock down bar lever while at it.

The smaller upper playfield is stripped. There’s very little here but it gets the bulk of the visible action.

These harnesses have also been ultrasonic’d and the one will get repaired. I unpinned to make the removal easier. If I had the soldering station powered up but had the depinning tool handy.

This one got a sheet of Mylar after cleaning and polishing to protect against future damage.

Two decals need freeze sprayed so they can be reinstalled.

The larger under ramp one came off perfectly. The other smaller one tore as it’s more fragile.

I use 3M 467MP and was able to get the torn one to look ok. That 3M stuff is awesome and I find uses for it all the time with and without pinball. I get it from Pinrestore.

Coil wrappers showed so the flippers are about ready to go along with the drop target assemblies and upper playfield kickers.

Hmmm, how will the freeze spray work on the drop target decals? No bueno.

So they went together decal-less while we see if anyone can make these. Add to that that I found one opto is loose after a cleaning so will need to get one and install.

The kickback and ball trough kicker assemblies are finished with their new wrappers. The kickback has new armature too.

The bulk of the parts showed too so I wrapped up the posts. All t nuts, posts, and studs have been replaced as needed.

The ramp, drops, spaceship, target X and more decals are available via Zona Arcade/Mikonos....we supplied the original decals for him to create the reproductions...

Thanks Matt. We're aware of them but was hoping to find a source for targets stateside. The other decals are all good or transferred over fine.
