I stumbled across the Bally "Theory of operation" pdf a while ago and had a great time reading it. Does anyone know of any similar writing for other boards or companies?

Gottlieb has something similiar for sys 1 and sys 80. There is some WPC documentation as well.
I just scanned and uploaded some documentation for allied leisure on IPDB (though I'm sure it will only apply to a very limited audience): http://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=750
Do you happen to have links or know the names of any of those? The only other thing I've found is the System 80 service manual (http://arcarc.xmission.com/Pinball/PDF%20Pinball%20Misc/System80%20Service%20Manual.pdf) but it doesn't go into nearly as much detail as the Bally one, and half of it is just explaining the schematic

It's interesting that the Bally document discusses charge current going to the batteries. Did machines from a certain period use rechargeable batteries?

Yep--1970s to early 1980s. Bally -17/-35,6803; Stern M-100/M-200, Gottlieb Sys 1/80.
Data east, Sega, Stern, WPC, pin2k, Gottlieb Sys 3 used non-rechargables.
