Quoted from KevInBuffalo:

I swapped the DMD board with the one in my DW and the problem went away so there's definitely a problem somewhere on the board. (The issue appears when I put the TAF board in DW as well).
Off for repair!
While I'm in troubleshooting mode, any suggestions for a weak kickout on the chair scoop? It can get so bad that sometimes when I hit two balls in it during multiball it won't kick them all the way out.

I had this same problem with my CftBL and resolved it by just adjusting the kickout coil underneath the playfield. ... sometimes it just gets out of alignment and it does not hit the ball right in the middle!

It keeps the ball from hanging up in the swap. There can be a "dead" area in the swamp and the ball can get stuck there or move slowly through that area. This just sticks in place and prevents that from happening.

I've got Gold Roms on my standard TAF.... Are there any cons?

#319 8 years ago
Quoted from golfingdad1:

Nobody has a an answer for this. ........?

My TAF is currently "out of service", so I really lack the will of digging into it..... why don't you take the glass out and try and simulate that scenario? Later you can share your findings with us all!

Been through that same discussion on the TZ thread.... I used to be "mod addicted", but now I'm realizing that less is more.... some mods are of extremely bad taste and I hate any toy that get's in the way of seeing the pinBALL in action.... Anyway.... I do have some mods in my TAF!

Quoted from RussMyers:

No additional suggestion for just that area.
You may want to give the Thing Hand a good cleaning, but you don't have to remove the box to do that.
I like:
Bookcase Decals (several styles to choose from)
Uncle "Lester" for the electric chair
Swamp Lamp (I rolled my own) or from Leesparts
Bookcase Spotlight (I rolled my own) or from Leesparts
Swamp Accelerator from Leesparts
RussM

The Swamp Accelerator is not a MOD - it's a NECESSITY!

#340 8 years ago
Quoted from accidental:

I wonder about this swamp accelerator. Is it designed for people with troublesome swamps, or does it also meaningfully improve a correctly-functionall swamp?

Is your swamp 100% correctly-functional? The ball never got stuck or took quite a while to be ejected? You never almost "tilted" the machine so the ball could be spelled out? If so, good for you, I would not touch it.... Unfortunately that was not my case....

OH, ok, aftermarket stuff ! I'd like to ask anybody here about using those $18.00 gold balls?? Do they work well with the magnets??Do they last?? I've never seen a TAFG from nib,so i don't know what they look like! I'm asking cause mine has been upgraded to gold and i'd like to "make it so " Thanks!!

I used to have golden balls on my TotAN and NO, they don't last....

My TAF has the Gold ROM Version, but I kept mine BLUE/Original.... Much better looking (my humble opinion).

I highly doubt that, shipping charges have gone way up on stuff even within the US in the last few years. I used to be able to ship things, by standard mail, or UPS or FedEx really cheap. Something like an xmas ornament would cost me US $2-3 to ship, and now it costs me US $6-8, it is just crazy.

Dude, several led strips can be sent using a letter envelope.... Last month I bought some stuff from Marco Spec... they charged me US$ 9.00 to ship me a small box... USPS tracked....

Quoted from Jesterfunhouse:

Here are some pictures of a recent shop out of a TAF for a friend that I did using Titan competition rings. I also color matched the posts and flasher caps to the playfield/plastics. Curious if people think this looks good or takes away from the original colors. For example because it has the red pingraffix pin blades I changed the flasher cap on the red curtains to a red plastic cap instead of clear. I also changed the back right flasher cap to blue to match the plastics and I changed the clear cap over the swamp to green. I also changed the plastic posts to red to match the curtain areas...Thoughts?

I like it! I try to follow these same color matching ideas for posts, flashers, etc... with all my games, though I maintain the colors of the flipper rubbers the same!

#903 7 years ago
Quoted from Miguel351:

I haven't really looked it up yet, but I'll ask here in case anybody knows off the top of their head:
Is there a definite or factory correct color arrangement/order to the pop bumpers?
I know on other titles like TZ, they belong in a certain order, but since the pops have nothing to do with the skill shot on TAF, I don't have a reference point. I ask because when I go to rebuild the pops, I've got matching skirt colors to go with them that I'm thinking of using. I'd hate to have one or more colors out of order!

#1055 7 years ago
Quoted from Pinballgeek:

Been in the club for about 6 solid years now; it was a birthday present and a damn good one too The condition of the machine is what I would call a players machine ; it has the usual wear and tear on the playfield but it doesn't harm the gameplay because it plays like a dream. I would like a minty playfield one day but I can't afford to splash the cash on one. In my opinion LEDs don't suit the theme as much in comparison to star trek however I have put LEDs in the backbox to emphasise the lighting bolt.

Both great games.... There's an empty spot on my game-room, right beside my TAF, just to fit an STtNG (that I'm already waiting for over a year to finish restoration....)

#1102 7 years ago

Because it's only in the gold roms.
And if I remember correctly indeed at the start of the second multiball. It's also harder because you have to lock all the balls in the vault.

#1110 7 years ago

True.
Starting second multiball from the chair triggers this call out.

Ok, so coincidentally, tonight I got my best game ever... glass ON... 352B and had a 2nd multiball, but I had all my balls into the vault.... didn't hear the callout... well, gotta try again, this time trying to trigger it from the chair.....

Hi all! Joined the club a few weeks back and family is loving the machine. One easy question, how do you disable the option to continue the game after your last ball drains? I'd like to buy a TAF flyer... is anyone selling?

Due to the lamps positions, I have a super strong feeling that my BG backboard came from another machine... Can anyone please post a picture of yours so to compare?

Thanks - it really makes much more sense!!!! Now off to search for a backboard to replace mine...

Hey you all, I looked around and couldn't find a BG backboard anywhere... new, used or repro... can anyone help me?

#1402 6 years ago
Quoted from Miguel351:

If you have one you can trace, I think it's just a thick piece of fiberboard you could probably have made for you somewhere.
But don't quote me on that.

Yeah, you're right! Think I'll go that way!

Quoted from Miguel351:

Just started noticing an issue with mine recently. When Thing goes to drop the ball back into the saucer, or does the "No, no, no..." fake grab, the saucer kickout seems to fire early as it's launching the ball into Thing and it's rebounding back into the saucer, so it kick it out again while Thing is retracting and the ball is finally able to clear Thing.
Is this a common thing? Is it an opto situation? Do I just need to clean them or is one of them getting flaky?
What have been your experiences with this situation? I'm not entirely worried about it since it doesn't really affect gameplay, but it is definitely not normal operation and I'd like to fix it before things get worse as it may be a symptom of something else and I'd like to track it down early.

Never saw such "thing" happened with mine, but now that you're saying, it's been a really loooong time since I last heard the "no no no" fake grab... How do I trigger it to run a test?

#1419 6 years ago
Quoted from Miguel351:

In gameplay, just light up the yellow T-H-I-N-G letters. I'm not sure how to do it in test mode. I know you can run the thing hand to test for the optos and motor function, but I don't know if it also fires the magnet.
Sorry I can't tell you more. I've rarely gone into the test menus on my TAF since it hardly ever has something go wrong. I don't know it nearly as well as I know my TZ.

Well, tried and tried again during game-play with the glass off and just wasn't able to replicate the "no, no, no Thing" thing... I'm starting to guess there's sthg wrong with my TAF... Does anyone know how to exactly accomplish this event?

Hey Andrew, received your board today but it didn't come with installation guides. I wonder it may be pretty straight forwarding, but since I got no technical skills, could you please post a quick step-by-step here, if possible with pics? Thanks in advance!

Quoted from Jesterfunhouse:

I believe you have to have both balls already locked then have it land on thing. This is why you can't activate it just by hitting the switches a bunch of time. Lock up two balls and then try it.

Well, accomplished it yesterday... Not sure yet how or why it triggers... I didn't have any balls locked, but had just completed the THING lights on the speaker panel..

Quoted from mrgregb123:

Yes, the trick is to mount the LCD screen higher than normal. This allows clearance for the original THING light board. Then you just go into the ColorDMD settings and move the screen area down so it fits properly into the backbox screen opening. Good to go. This is how ColorDMD told me to do it. Works perfectly.

Wouldn't it be easier to use the LED colordmd version?

#1550 6 years ago
Quoted from mrgregb123:

Easier? Maybe you'll save 3 mins doing it that way but the THING lights are much dimmer using the LCD to light them than the original light board. I've had it both ways and much prefer using the real deal.

I'm just saying that as the LED version fits exactly like the original dmd, you don't need to go through all that mounting hassle, or did I miss something here?

#1553 6 years ago
Quoted from mrgregb123:

It's not a hassle. Instead of mounting it in one set of holes, you use another set. The installation is exactly the same. If you're buying an LED aftermarket solution, sure you can do that, but you're spending money you don't have to spend.

In other news, I just finished testing on Mantis' brand new stainless steel swamp replacement with the built in accelerator ramp. The small lift prevents the ball from hanging behind the kickout and the stainless steel construction means it won't get dented over time.
Pretty sure the official announcement and pricing will be on Mantis' facebook page as soon as it's ready for sale - https://www.facebook.com/mantispinball/

Hey guys my taf is finally working . An awesome pinball tech came and found a couple wires that weren’t connected. Other than some static from right speaker everything is running great. Hey, how about posting a video?

So I just ordered a new speaker panel, since mine was a little scratched, and I'm about to install this:
» YouTube video
I found one on http://www.pinballspareparts.com.au. With shipping, it was only $87, because of the exchange rate. Best price I've found, by far. I also ordered a clear ramp, since that was only $111 shipped... With our recent group purchase, it seems I'm down under pinball's best customer... Hmmm... What else do I "need" that takes advantage of the great exchange rate??

Curious about the sound on this video.... it seems clearer, with a better eq than mine... does anyone know if it's a new pinsound mix, or maybe I need to have sthg adjusted on my speakers?

I actually turned the brightness down to level 2 (it has 5 levels), and imo LED is the way to go on TAF because it doesn't need to mess with the THING lights board.... you basically take the old dmd out and plug the new dmd in with minimum effort!

Do any of you know the history of the production of this game? I recently took possession of my father's game, he bought it in 92 or 93, not exactly sure when. There was always this notion from him that it was a "prototype" addams family. I had sort of dismissed the idea, and he is no longer around to tell the story. I have been working on fixing and cleaning the game, and started playing it tonight. I realized that one of my gripes as a kid was that the mansion rooms didn't make any sense. I went online to look at pictures of other mansions, and realized my inserts are different! I have been confused for years and it wasn't my fault. None of my rooms are labeled "mamushka", thing is in the wrong place, and one insert just says "open book case". The sticker inside the coin door says date of manufacture December 5 1991. Anyone have any knowledge?

Post some more pics!!!

I got to thinking about this and the super high scores you see. You can change so much on when you get an extra ball that 100,000,000 on one TAF might be a low score and might be a high score on another. If you set the Extra Ball to every 10,000,000 (default is 300,000,000) for example and gave that repeat value of 5+ (just a hypothetical number) you could have scores in the billions all the time.
FWIW I have mine set to extra ball at 60,000,000 with a repeat of 3. My highest game is 1,290,000,000. I'm sure that's nothing compared to most.

If I do remember I get an extra-ball at 100k... Factory settings I guess...
