how rare the non matching bolt color cabinet/heads for these machines.

Never heard of these..

I thought you were saying the bolts not the lightning bolts on the decals.

Been working on converting TAF’s playfield pivot system to a Stern style playfield slide out system. Required quite a few minor modifications. It’s pretty tight in some spots. So far, so good.

Hi everyone,
I’ve had my TAF for about 8 years and recently acquired a new Wonka. And my 9 year old loves the new JJP. But can’t get into TAF. Since she is so into Wonka, I’m thinking of trading the Addams Family for a Dialed In since she just can’t get into TAF. The problem is I don’t know much about assessing the quality of the machine I have. I recently read about magnet burn on TAF and wondered if my machine had it. I looked at pics of machines that had the magnet burn but couldn’t really tell what it was. I am including pics of my machine and wondered if anyone could tell by the pics if this machine had any easily identifiable issues. Thanks for any input.

Your PF looks fine, the 2 magnets are near the roof of the mansion in the middle of your PF. If you had magnet burn it would go through the playfield, most often showing as planking (lines in the wood) or worse is actual burn mark.
If would be easier if you looked under the PF by lifting it up so you could say the magnet directly but your machine looks great.

i would say nowadays a nice TAF is worth more than a DI but like anything, it is very subjective

#4012 3 years ago
Quoted from Joeymonkey:

I don’t know much about assessing the quality of the machine I have.

That's a pretty nice TAF!
Pros:
No magnet burn.
Minimal playfield wear. Mansion looks ok, except for the top corner of 1 insert and maybe some wear at the inlane ball drop.
No cabinet damage.
No rust under the lockdown bar.
Coindoor, topper, legs, and translite look OK.

Cons:
You have a credit dot. What does the report say when you open the coin door? Maybe a switch or coil or motor not working?
Flipper is misadjusted, and maybe some other maintenance is needed.

Do the boards and wiring look OK, any hacks?

IMHO - in a big metro area like NY, NY, you can get 7K for it fairly quickly.

#4013 3 years ago

I just took a deposit on a nice DI for less than that TAF would sell for. You should have no problem doing what you want to do.

#4014 3 years ago

Thank you all for taking the time to assess the machine. I really appreciate it.

Quoted from hisokajp:

Thank you Hisokajp, I looked under it and it looks pretty good. Here is a shot from underneath. How does it look to you?

Thanks for letting me know about the credit dot, Neal W. I had no idea that the machine was even trying to tell me anything when it rang a few times and said Test Report each time I turned it on. Thought it was just the standard start up. I checked and it said that I hadn’t set my date and time yet. Funny to see the date being 1989 when I went to set it. Now it seems the credit dot is gone and all is well.

Quoted from Neal_W:

Do the boards and wiring look OK, any hacks?

I took pictures inside the cabinet and back box as I really don’t know all that much about what it should look like in there. Nothing seems hacked in there. I have very rarely gone inside the machine as I always worry about messing it up, although with the help of some pinsiders I did take apart a flipper assembly and change a coil stop when it had a weak small flipper a few months ago. I was watching some videos on how to solder in case my coils needed changing but never had the guts to do it. Because then it would probably look pretty messy down there. The only other problem I’ve experienced is the kick out to the shooter lane is occasionally weak and won’t get the ball in the lane. May take three of four attempts before the ball loads in the lane. I figured this was a coil problem but as I won’t attempt that myself, I didn’t do anything about it yet. Luckily it hasn’t been happening for the past few months.
Again thank you all so much for the help. And if you see anything strange in the cabinet or backbox, please let me know. (Ooh, I realize I have the wrong bulb in the cousin It window but wasn’t sure what I need so it only shows him some of the time)

Thanks so much
Joey

Quoted from Joeymonkey:

I checked and it said that I hadn’t set my date and time yet.

No magnet damage there. The playfield underside would look burned black around the magnets if there was.

If the clock is not keeping time, the batteries are dead. Replace the 3 AA batteries ASAP before they start to leak and damage the CPU board. The time, high scores, and free play setting should be backed up then. Everything else looks fine in the pics. Looks like there are some LEDs installed in the backbox, so that is a plus.

#4016 3 years ago
Quoted from Neal_W:

Better yet, get those batteries completely off the board with a remote holder, or go the cell battery or NVRAM route. BTW, beautiful game.

#4017 3 years ago

Thank you so much.

Quoted from Neal_W:

Replace the 3 AA batteries ASAP before they start to leak and damage the CPU board

I read about leaking batteries a month ago and I looked at the options. Easiest safe option seemed to be pick up some lithium batteries as they last a long time and aren’t known to leak. So that’s what I did. I never set the date and time after replacing.

Quoted from gac:

go the cell battery or NVRAM route.

I looked into those options but seemed a little more difficult, but I will revist and see if I am up to it.

Thanks again for the help in assessing the game.

Also, and this may sound dumb, but how do trades usually work? After finding someone willing to trade through an ad, do both parties ship their games at the same time? Does one ship and their shipper pick up the game when they deliver first game?
Just want to know how difficult the logistics will be. May be easier to sell TAF and then wait for a DILE to become available.
Thanks.

Yes, sell your TAF first, then look for a DI. Doing a "pin swap" is so much more hassle.

Does anyone have an extra nice used/new right sling plastic they are willing to part with? My Gomez is chipped

Also looking for new apron decals? Are they available?

Im looking to brighten up the playfield without going the pinstadium route. I was thinking about adding some LED spotlights. Im sure someone has done the leg work on this and was wondering if there was any info/pics that gave good results.

TAF is a really dark game and need more lights. I installed two extra spotlights with great results imo. One near the bookcase, lighting the whole upper area around bookcase/bear ramp/train and a second on the right slingshot illuminating the mansion area.

Will try post a picture tomorrow.

Here’s a pic of the back area lit up with a 15” 5v purple led strip. Sorry I don’t have a broader pic of the game.

Here is what I did. I changed out the playfield back board to plexiglass and had the art work done so you could back light it. To me this also helps light up the back of the game, but not too much to take away the rest of the playfield GI lighting.

I have 5 or so spotlights in mine to cover the lower and upper playfield, But I want to undo it. I’ve been looking into going the DIY pinstadium route instead.

Why is it called a bear kick? My guess... In the show, the bearskin rug growls and frightens guests when they step on it, and it lays at the bottom of the stairs (like on the playfield). I guess "kick" was just what they chose to call it. Also the bear growls when you hit the ramp and you see the bear animation.

Hello everyone!

While playing last night, a part of the game fell inside the cabinet. Does anyone knows where this part goes? It’s suppose to be use in two different locations but I don’t know where to start. It’s a pivot nut.

Thank you for your help!

It’s the playfield hinge pivot point. A nut should be holding it tight which likely fell in your cabinet too.

Thats the pivot nut that your playfield pivots on. Be careful raising your playfield without that in place.

Wait, there is a nut also? Isn't that thing both pivot point and "nut" all in one? I dont think I got an extra nut on any of my pins.

On some older titles it's just a tube with no threads and a nut. Newer titles like (at least my TAF) it's threaded as a nut.

Example on a System 11 pic I had of ones without the threads:

On yours there is no extra nut, thats why its called a pivot nut and not a pivot point. Just screw that pivot nut back in place.

Looking for beta testers for my reproduction part.

Quoted from Juicerc51:

That my Pinside store I've listed it as a work-in-progress / under development in my Bally/Williams reproduction parts page. https://pinside.com/pinball/market/shops/1167-gameroom-mods/04551-bally-williams-reproduction-pinball-parts

Quoted from hisokajp:

I've seen it as well. it's FDM printed which is probably fine. I may offer an FDM version but I will have a resin version as well which even pretty up close will look like it's been injection molded like the original.

I'm in the final phases of creating and selling the Thing box for TAF. It will be modified just a bit from the original since it needed to be optimized for 3D printing. I'm interested in 1 or 2 beta testers to try it out. As you know the box is hard to get in and out so I'm expecting the testers actually need a box and are willing to go through the effort to try 1 or 2 iterations of it and provide feedback including photos. The Beta testers that help me finalize it will get other versions of it as I develop them. The idea is to create a bunch of different looks and feels including accommodations for adornments like rivets and leather. PM me if you are interested.

Looking for beta testers for my reproduction part.

That my Pinside store I've listed it as a work-in-progress / under development in my Bally/Williams reproduction parts page. https://pinside.com/pinball/market/shops/1167-gameroom-mods/04551-bally-williams-reproduction-pinball-parts

Yep. I can make any color I can buy or mix the resin in.

My TAF arrived - beautiful new color DMD, new LEDs, new clear ramps. My stomach sank when I found screw laying in the bottom of the machine when I lifted the playfield. Then on my first game I realized the Thing Hand was not actuating. Hmm, must be related to the screw I found. Sure enough, talked to the pinball tech from where I bought the machine, a couple of pictures traded back and forth, a crash course in removing the Thing Hand, reattaching the linkage to the gearbox, aligning the up/down opto's and all is good.

Question - there is some wear around all the eject holes (chair, swamp) - do you recommend installing cliffys on them (and if so, the regular ones or the extended ones?). Overall, the game looks and plays great.

Putting in Pinstadiums and new speakers next...

Took the plunge, bought my dream pin today - not sure if I should scream “Showtime” or a subtle “Now you’ve done it.”

Cliffys is the way to go-keep away from any counterfeits. Normals vs extended depends on how much the holes are worn...

Cliff was super-helpful to me. I sent him photos of my playfield and he recommended the right sizes for the amount of wear I had.
