Quoted from 30FathomDave:

Got my TAF delivered today! This one is MUCH nicer than my first one. I added the LED color DMD, and now that I've got one machine with an LED display and another (Monster Bash) with LCD, i've gotta say, I think LED looks better if you prefer dots. I'll be ordering an LED display for my Scared Stiff as soon as they're back in stock.
I also installed mirror blades, and some additional lighting. I can't decide if I like the blues in the back. I may tone that down with some cool whites.

welcome back to the club. did the vids go upstairs ?

Saw TAF on an antiques roadshow episode today!

Thanks! Yeah, the vids got moved to my upstairs game room (along with my Tron pin).

Quoted from Bronty:

Saw TAF on an antiques roadshow episode today!

How much did they quote for price?

#1305 7 years ago

I think they said 4-6 for player condition and up to 15 fully restored . Nice little segment where they showed a lot of the machine... a scripted/hosted segment like they have in the middle of the show as a break from the walk-in appraisals

#1306 7 years ago

I believe the segments can be looked up on the pbs site

#1307 7 years ago

Fantastic.

No matter how correct they are on the value of TAF's, everyone at home who's got one that knows absolutely nothing about pinball, now thinks that their beater with a worn mansion, magnet burn, and gutted chair hole is worth $6k, if not more.

I call it the "Barrett-Jackson effect".

As we all know, there are more TAF's out there than any other pin, and there are still tons of them in non-collector/mom and dad/average joe hands who now will look them up on eBay and see them even higher than "what the TV said" and will ask an arm and a leg for theirs, trying to put their 25 year old nephew who works at Taco Bell, through college.

…or does that only really happen where I live?

#1308 7 years ago

well that happens with everything. When something is worth 4k to 15k depending on blah blah all anyone hears is 15k. That's true whether its a pinball machine or anything else.

Doesn't mean it will sell for 15k, so no harm done really, just an overpriced BIN no one will pop.

I get that its annoying, but its not going away. For pinball machines, or anything else - there will always be sellers with unrealistic expectations.

#1309 7 years ago

And just to add on top of what Bronty just wrote.
A pin (or any other artifact) is only worth as much as the high-bidder says it´s worth.

So in all fairness, it is not the sellers that build on to the issue, it is us buyers. If we would
not buy a overrated (as many seem to claim) pinball machine from the early -90s.
A machine that was built in a series of 20k + machines for 15k.

There would be none to sell at that price. As a owner and seller of any artifact, including
pinball machines one would be pretty dumb an naive not wanting as much as the market
would pay for the artifact, when a decision to sell has been made.

With that said, I am one of those that buy, not sell so if I by margin help any
"25 year old nephew who works at Taco Bell, through college",
that would be pretty beneficial for all , wouldn't you say?

Cheers

Since I installed the ColorDMD in my TAF I was wondering what to do with the "thing" lights. You can't mount the PCB board for "thing" as there is no clearance to do so between the ColorDMD mounting, board, and plug. So I picked up some LED's and took them apart and soldered them to the circuit board. Made a jumper harness and now I should be able to mount this directly to the wood without the stand off's and they will work again! I did yellow LED's so the colors look vibrant. Pretty simple as long as you have a good iron and can solder!

FWIW (I know some prefer LED and some prefer LCD), LED fits with no need for modification. I know a lot of folks prefer LCD, so that's a sweet solution!

That is some awesome work sir.
I do believe there is a mod kit for this already.
But I'm sure your do it yourself way is much cheaper.

One of the plus sides of using the LED is they work but I believe they are not as bright even on the LED version of the DMD? Personally I love the look of the LCD over LED. Then again I keep watching the show on the LCD screen and missing shots! So it does have some downs unless your playing with others then you can watch!

Thanks yea this didn't cost much at all. 7 LED's, some wire, and a half hour of my time. I like to use original parts when I can that way it will stay with the machine for good and it's easy enough to convert back to original if one wanted to. Every time I have spare parts I loose them!

LED is much brighter. I have an LED (Scared Stiff) and an LCD (Monster Bash) right next to each other in my game room, and it's not even close.

#1317 7 years ago

Both Colordmd rock. But I prefer the LCD for Addams, the smoothing function just makes it look like a real cartoon. Very smooth.

I find if the DMD is too bright is glares down on the PF somewhere that's one of the several reasons I prefer the LCD over LED and the over all smoothness as stated.

Bent plastic is a MUST if you go the LED route, otherwise there's definitely a significant glare.

I'm personally not a fan of the smoothing effect, but for those who are, LCD is 100% the way to go.

You really can't go wrong with either display (it's like choosing between two awesome pizza places) - but I'm totally drinking the LED kool-aid right now. The blacks are nice and dark and the bright display really pops. My MB sitting next to Scared Stiff and across from TAF looks bland by comparison. I'm seriously considering installing an LED in it and selling my LCD display (if anyone wants to trade, let's talk).

#1320 7 years ago

I might be interested in your old LCD, if/when you decide to sell it.

Quoted from Miguel351:

It actually has the far left vertical line out on it. You almost can't tell in game play but for what used ones are going for I might just keep it for a test spare. It's amazing how the ColorDMD has killed used DMD prices.

#1322 7 years ago

And it works beautiful! I was so worried the LED's I used might be too bright but they are perfect. Super happy with the outcome of this project! Now to play a bunch of games!

Sorry, that was meant for 30FathomDave with regard to him possibly selling his old LCD ColorDMD, if he replaces it with the LED version.

I already have a DMD with a vertical line out.

It's on my TZ and it's the rightmost line.

#1325 7 years ago

Got your numbers backwards there it's $41 bucks! This cost me about $6 bucks and half hour of my time. I was able to use my own flavor of LED as well.

Well after two weeks of cleaning and polishing I finally got to turn it on for a bit.....

And here's a little before and after on that corrosion that was, oddly enough, only in the back corner of the cabinet. New ground wire cleaned up power box, some stainless bolts and she's good as new.

Two-week round up.... Cabinet cleaned up. Every bolt/screw/nut removed and thrown in the tumbler. Everything polished/painted and bolted back on. New ground braid, new buttons, a few new bolts, New battery holder, etc etc. Then the damned harbor freight tumbler died.... Sigh. Starting on the playfield tomorrow!

Agreed. Ive already ordered some. However my soldering skills suck. I'm hoping someone will be at pinfest who can install it for me.

#1334 7 years ago

I'm thinking about getting TAF as my next pin. I just played it for like 4 hours on saturday and really had alot of fun. Is there anything I should aware of when looking at them to buy one?

You do have to solder a socket in on these for installation only down side. If you take your time with a good iron it's not to bad of a job to do.

Yup!

Common issues are playfield wear around the mansion, the chair scoop, the swamp and somewhat less common is magnet burn under the power on the playfield. Look for discoloration/burn/yellowing of the playfield where the power is.

The good news is that most parts for TAF are available and there is a reproduction PF coming from CPR soon. It's a great game!

Hi All,

I'm looking for a $3,500-ish Addams Family.

It's a long shot I know, but this is what I have available to put towards a fixer-upper.

Please let me know if you know of one available. I'm in the SF Bay Area. I'll have shipped for the right deal.

Much appreciated!

Thx,
