I recently bought a space invaders in ok condition. Needed to replace the J3 connector (in the backbox) as there were issues starting a game (after transport), but I knew about this before, when I bought it. It seems the gentleman I bought it from had a friend get it running. His friend was , how do I say politely, a butcher, haha. In my excitement to buy this machine and get it home, I neglected to give it a huge look over. In any case, the issue that I am having now is that the knocker is not functioning (coil tests good), it won't register a free game credit, special not working, extra ball wont register and it appears dip switches are not working. I notice that the MPU is a Stern as well. The transformer assembly board in the cabinet looks kinda rough as well. My question to you is should I start with replacing all the connectors on the transformer assembly board and go from there or start with the MPU? Im leaning toward a connector issue but its still early on. I added some pics of both boards for your consideration. Thanks!

If you plan on keeping it awhile, replace all the connectors on the MPU, SDB and replace the transformer rectifier board. Plenty of options out there and they aren't expensive.

have you checked the dip switch settings in the manual to what has been set on the mpu board?

Thanks for the sound advice. Do you figure that would solve all the issues? I hear this machine has a major issue with connectors and I can see evidence of quick connector repairs all over the place, including liberal usage of hot glue to permanently affix the connectors..

Yes. It appears that the dip switches wont release from some sort of default setting.

is the external battery connected to the mpu board?

sorry, not sure on your reply of the dip switches not releasing?

seeing as you just got it, I'd personally start with replacing the rectifier board.

The battery pack, yes, with really long leads so it sits on the ledge.

Dip switches wont respond at all, regardless of settings. For example, to change it from 3 balls to 5 balls, score for replay, match settings, sounds, etc. It is like they are permanently locked. Game plays , but you cant get an extra ball or free game or match.

looking in the manual dip switches 6 & 7 should be on to reward a replay which would result in the credit knocker being used and an extra ball awarded when you go in the side lanes when extra ball is lit.

looking at your mpu both these switches are off.

to check the credit knocker try the solenoid test via the red button switch on the inside of the front door.

Thank you, I appreciate it. Im going to try right now and get back to you, haha

could also be that the game is a Bally, one that uses a -35 mpu and the game has an early Stern mpu board in it and the jumpers may not be correct?

I kind of feel like an idiot....Mistook off position for on. Your solution worked and I have all functions now. Thank you very much, I owe you one!

glad it worked out for you, always learning

Glad you have it working. Here is what I would do.
As a former Bally guy I would never tolerate a Stern board in my Bally game. Replace the offending MPU with a new board, either B&I or Alltech.
Replace or repair the rectifier board. The originals integrity is compromised by the hacking. Pinball resource has replacement bridges that will install properly and alleviate the hacks or B&I sells an updated clean replacement rectifier. The connectors look to be good so avoid replacing them unless there are issues or evidence of extensive burning.
Finally, although others will recommend it, avoid repining for the sake of repining. Besides the shells becoming harder to get, the original .100 crimps were tinned at the factory and will for the most part run well for a lifetime. By all means reflow the solder connections to the pins but repining opens up a whole other rabbit hole you do not want to go down unless you have to.
