I noticed that side rail nails are available in 3/4" and 1". The originals are 5/8" and I fear the 3/4" would be too tight. Does anyone know where to get 5/8" ones?

Nip off, say, an eighth?

Always possible but not ideal for new holes. I was hoping someone sold them in 5/8".

I used screws #4 size I think . Much easier.

Easier to remove in the future as well!

1/2 is available from McMaster-Carr.
An 1/8th smaller than 5/8.

Not sure if the same for Bally, but PBR sells the exact size twist nail for Gottliebs. I have never found them anywhere else.

Thanks Cash I will ask Steve if he thinks they are the same size...I need to place an order anyway!

I found that if you use 3/4 ones the tip will protrude out the other side. I use side cutters and snip a small amount off and they worked fine. When you cut them off hold your cutters at an angle and that will leave a point so they drive in easier if you are not going in existing holes.

I usually only use nails around the flipper button, the rest get screws.

Also, how do you hammer them in without indentations? What tool.

Vid I am not sure I would like the look of rails held on with screws...can someone please post a picture of it.

Thanks,
Dave

I don't think it looks bad...

The ones Steve had last time i ordered some were a little to long. I just held onto them by the shank with a set of needle nose pliers, Then just run it along a grinding wheel at an angle to shorten it up some. By Turning the nail with the pliers, you can still keep a point so that you can drive it in.

As for how I drive them into the cabinet. I fold up a napking a little and then place it over the head of the hammer and hold it on with electrical tape. That way i have the strength of the hammer, but a light cushion to not damage the head

Just make sure you get decorative head, low profile screws
