The lights in the backbox of my Bally "Sea Ray" go dark every time both sets of score reels are at zero. This includes all lights: GI, player 1/2, ball number, etc. Both score reels are at zero during and after the reset sequence, of course -- once the ball hits a scoring element on the playfield, the lights come back on. Or, you can manually increment any score reel and the lights come back on. If you go all the way around to zero, the lights go out again.

What on earth could be causing this? I don't even know where to begin looking. I've cleaned two of four jones plugs, and plan to clean the other two, but an issue as predictable as this isn't likely to be a dirty contact.

If anyone has the schematic, that could maybe help... unfortunately the only copy I have cuts off just above all the circuits for the lights.

Thanks for any and all help!

That sounds like a short to me of some kind.

clean the backbox jones plugs and look for wires loose or extra screws and such.

I would manually try each reel at 0 with the others at 5 and see if you can narrow it down to a single reel or if its all of them together that cause your issue

I'll look carefully at the jones plugs, but the backbox ones were the two that I cleaned. We'll see...as for manually moving the score reels:

Any other ideas? Anybody have a schematic (or even a schematic from a Bally of the same vintage)?

Look for a loose/broken solder wire on the female side of the Backbox Jones Plugs as well. Give them all a good tug or two.

My Gulfstream had a broken wire that went to the Backbox GI lights and the last person just shoved it next to the female prong so it was just barely touching. All I did was desolder the joint, then resolder the wire back on, done.

Sea Ray's backglass is real pretty all lit up. Good luck with the fix.

Heartbreak! The backglass on mine is in pretty bad shape. I'm planning to make a replacement, after I scare the gremlins out of there.

Check the lights above each of the score reels for frame shorts. I ran into this with my Bally On Beam. I "straightened out" the sockets to line up better above the score reels because I didn't like how they were coming in at an angle. I ended up creating a short with the frame of one of the socket bases. Good luck!

Not that anybody needed an update four months later, but just in case: it was a dirty jones plug making bad contact. Finally fixed!!

glad you did update... even 4 months later... it's always good to see what made it work, adds to the knowledge base...
