I recently re-assembled my Embryon machine after I fixed the cabinet and did a deep clean on parts. Everything is working well post-reassembly, with one exception...the speech is barely audible, even with the door volume all the way up and both sound and speech volume pots turned all the way up. The sound volume is fine. The speech volume is technically working, but barrrrely audible. It's very very quiet. It was not like this before I took it all apart, so perhaps something got jostled around and failed?

This is a relatively new machine to me, but it appears many capacitors have been replaced, and the volume pots look new. The soldering seemed ok. There is a jumper on the back of the TMS5200 chip on a pin that is missing a soldering pad...not sure if that would perhaps be fragile and causing an issue. I will consult the schematic and try to troubleshoot further.

Any other thoughts what it may be? As a new owner and first-time pinball tinkerer, would appreciate the help. Thanks!

The pots look replaced but worth a look anyway. Often this type of problem can be fixed by cleaning the board pots. Crank them back and forth a few times and see if that gets your sound going.

Will give it a closer look. Maybe if I flip-flop them it will shed some light on whether they are the problem or not.

Hmm, tried turning them back and forth a bit, no luck. In fact, now the main "heartbeat" sound that plays throughout the game isn't playing at all (even though the rest of the game sounds are normal). Speech still very quiet.

I tried swapping the pots, no change.

Any advice on what steps might be appropriate next would be welcome. Thanks!

Can you test the amplifier at U18?

Yeah, I should be able to. I've not done that before, but I will look into the proper way to test it and report back with results.

And by "look into the proper way to test it" I meant that I will successfully measure 14.2V coming off of the amp and then touch something bad as I was taking the lead off of the 5 pin, causing a dramatic "pop" and now I have no sound at all. There are no signs of visible damage, but clearly I messed up nicely. Would a blowed-up amp be the likely victim here? I'm currently hunting for replacements
