Quoted from arolden:

Hi club,
I recently finished a restoration and repair job on a Playboy and recorded the process here: https://www.afpinball.com/restorations/bally-playboy. For your reading pleasure!

Wow, can't wait to dig more into your restoration process! My game is in remarkably good shape, but I'm still learning and about to tackle a cab restore, which terrifies me. LOL Trying to absorb it ALL before I dive in!

Quoted from GPS:

Hello All
Wondering if anyone out there that has done a cab re-paint can share the specifics of what colors they used. Seems like magenta, white and black. Satin or semi gloss seems to be the preferred sheen level. Looking specifically for color info on the white and magenta tones. Don’t have a machine yet but am actively searching. Please let me know if you have any leads. Thank you
George

I have everything I need for this winter's cabinet restore. I've done a lot with the playfield (on top, and under) and now it and the backglass are in terrific shape. The cab needs a facelift badly though. Structurally, it's in perfect condition, but the paint needs a refresh. I have a pretty comprehensive color wheel at my disposal, and have matched the white and magenta to what I've found under the legs when they're removed. I was hoping to stay away from the bright white and the hot pinks/purples that are often seen on restorations, and was relieved to learn the original magenta was a lot more subtle than I expected. The thought of tearing down the entire game for the cab restore terrifies me, since I'm still somewhat new, and have never tackled this before. So I'm immersing myself in threads like this, repair sites, and YouTube vids. So far, I've had no issues that I haven't gotten past this way, and I'm crossing my fingers this cabinet project keeps the momemtum alive.

Quoted from GPS: I just posted a method that I feel comfortable with to move the harness. You may wish to look at that as it gives me some peace in what I would normally consider a very tenuous part of the rehab.

How/where can I see it?

#283 2 years ago
Quoted from GPS:

This just gives me a little peace as I have not down this before. The pros can just take it off throw it in the dishwasher and place it back on the new playfield no big deal. I am not at that pay grade yet and this is what I came up with to calm my nerves while still being able to get the harness and related clean which I understand is a vital part of this process. Make sense?

Whatever works! Makes perfect sense!

Quench What device are you using to get such amazing clarity in these close-up photos??

Quoted from DougZ3:

GPS Did you use rattle paint cans for your cabinet repaint? Primer and then base white with rattle inside the cabinet and outside? And how long were you letting it dry between colors and coats?
It looks great! - I have one sitting for me to do and I just have to start

Just tore mine down and waiting for a nicer day to start the acetone/sanding/filling/sanding/filler/sanding....etc. etc... LOL

I'm wondering too about the rattle-can purple/magenta. There's a YouTube video of a guy doing a stencil repaint on a Fathom, and he uses liquid (rather than aerosol) with a small roller, with great results. I'm thinking I might go this route too, to get the white and magenta colors closest to original. The area under the side rails reveals a great reference point. I've never been a fan of the white-white and the Barbie pink I'm seeing on a lot of restos.

Thoughts???

Quoted from GPS:

I would be hesitant to use non-spray paint on the black and magenta simply because there may be issues when you goto remove the stencil. This is the tedious part. I used Rustoleum white on the base that I rolled with a small roller but then sprayed the black and magenta.
Using the white versus another color is definitely a personal preference but I do believe that the base color was white originally.
I just wrapped up my resto this eve. Had a small wiring problem that another pinsider Quench helped with big time. Game is done and worth the the effort for sure. Took about three months.
This was the first playfield swap that I did and it came out good. Don’t think I would venture into a complex playfield but would certainly do another Bally of this generation. What does your playfield look like?
[quoted image]

Oh, I’m definitely using white, but the original white was not a refrigerator white, but a slightly off-white. I’ll probably go with that. Curious though why you used a gloss white, then a satin magenta?

And my playfield and backglass are remarkably well-preserved given the age of the game, and compared to the cabinet. I dropped a playfield protector in, to help keep it that way. Just a tiny bit of ball trail wear near the grotto kickout.

Quoted from FantasticPinball:

More photos of the mysterious playfield. I am suspecting this playfield was touched up by someone very good at touch ups. I think the 2016 may be a water slide decal. Additional photos to show what I have here.[quoted image]

I wonder why someone decided to forego the black circles around the inserts in the bonus area and the grotto?? It seems clear that this was a conscious decision, since the paint was color matched to cover it. Very odd....

Quoted from FLNetMAn62:

Thanks and definitely looking to"modernize"without charging the game itself. Def need LED so all lights have same brightness and color. Than you for the advice.. Time to go shopping I guess

Playboy was my first machine a couple years ago, and I too went the LED route. A good rule of thumb: Cool white LED's behind white, warm whites behind fleshtones, and "sunlight" LED's (Comet is the only supplier of these, to my knowledge) everywhere else, including GI. I color match all the inserts.

It's all subjective for sure, but I think it really brought my game back to life.

Keep us posted!

Quoted from FLNetMAn62:

Which pics were your before and after?

I'm a little surprised you had to ask, but mmkay. Before is on the left, after on the right.

Quoted from FLNetMAn62:

Do you remember how many of each light you ordered?

I have no clue how many I ordered, as I have several games that use them. It's not difficult to just look at the playfield, the light board behind the backglass, and count.

Good luck. It's an easy game on which to learn.

Wondering if this occurs with others, and if I should make some adjustments or replacements.

Notice when the bank goes down Key 1 cute it does not hit the bumper cap often...missing scoring opportunities/ball action.

A ball going down the #1 key lane should always energize the upper-left pop bumper. You may have to adjust the switch where the spoon comes into contact with the bumper skirt peg to increase its sensitivity when ball touches it. It's always cool when the ball goes down the left lane, and the pop bumper kicks it into the grotto, the kicker shoots it back out, and down the #1 key lane again and again. Especially with that 25,000 bonus light lit up! Nudging skills help here. LOL
