Quoted from Pin-up:

I have one, and I still left my original in the machine.

Is it the new mirrored version they sold only with the last run of playfields?

#52 5 years ago
Quoted from tomdrum:

Has anyone gotten the new mirrored backglass from CPR to compare to the OE version?

i received one and send it back, that's how bad it looks, way too dark, no definition.

good if you have a machine with no backglass and can't find one.

#53 5 years ago

Sent my glass back also. Very bad reproduction. I believe Shay arcade will be remaking this glass, go with Shay.

#54 5 years ago

So beatmaster & Lmjdad, you both bought new playfields from the 2019 run and got the new digitally printed mirrored back glass and then returned them? I'm not talking about the inaccurate silkscreened version that been for sale for years. The 2019 version was only available to playfield buyers.

is there any other options for caps and drop targets besides classic arcades? I bought a set of each for the play boy restore that I have in the works and they were horrible!! almost as yellow as my originals!!

#60 5 years ago

Don’t know about the pop caps but the classic arcades drop targets are horrible

#61 5 years ago

Yeah so are the caps. The ones I received were just as yellow was the original ones

#62 5 years ago

I thought the best bet for targets/caps would be Steve Young but those are some of the very few he isn’t allowed to reproduce.

Quoted from tomdrum:

No, but I did purchase it within the last year or less, but it was purchased before the play fields were released.

Quoted from Pin-up:

I PM'd Kevin if the quality has improved in the backglass with digital printing because I thought the previous was poor. His response:

No offense at all... at the time, it was as good as anybody was going to muster, under silkscreening. But we knew it was off from original looking in the end, just barely acceptable. There were no original artwork films at PPS, and thus we had our own built off an NOS donor glass. Yes, the previous silkscreen version had all the typical oversaturation and deep contrast appearances when unlit. It was due to the gamma calculations the lab put in when making the films for the CMYK "dots" layers. Each to be screened down one at a time. It was a necessary evil, because the glass had to glow without looking washed out. So unlit areas suffered. We sold out of those many months ago.

The "new 2019 print" is a digital print (with screened mirror as before). The reason it's wayyyy better is because a) it's no longer at 73 lines per inch (146 dpi in digital terms), which is the feasible limit of dot size for openings in a screen, thus on our films from the lab. The new print is 900dpi, straight up. b) The digital glasses are multi-layered... meaning there is a front layer you see when you look at the glass, then another identical layer behind it, behind white. So when the glass is unlit, you see the NOS glass imagery, at color level/match... when the lights come on, the hidden layer is also illuminated in tandem, and the backglass glows at perfect saturation, without washing out. So it's the best of both worlds. It's how "real" movie posters are done, for example. There is a mirror image of the same poster, exactly positioned, on the backside of the poster. So when unlit on a wall, they look normal. When backlit in a theater lightbox, they glow without washing out, and don't look like a cheap backlit poster.

The ONLY thing I can critique about our Playboy glasses now, is that the NOS perfect specimen that Stu took years to find and have donated for the Cruze scanner, is slightly "soft" in focus. The factory ever-so-slightly misregistered the individual pigment layers. It's something Stu and I can recognise, but nothing I think the general public could identify. Not at 2 feet away or more, anyway. But again, this was "NOS perfect" that we were duplicating for repro It was a $600 glass we barely got the guy to loan us (he was scared shitless to ship it), but we talked him into it.

Screened mirror is only 92%, while real silver bath mirror (as on the originals) is 100%. So there is a slight difference there.

So does anyone have one of these?

Ministry of Pinball sells nice bumper caps, I bought a set last year. However they are out of stock now.

Well,I just received a playboy backglass from them about 2 weeks ago - but have not opened it yet - I guess I should do do that!
I am not sure if I will know if I have an old style or new style.. But I will report back!

If it looks all washed out, old style. Did you get it with a PF?

Yes I got it with a playfield...
and yes it looks a little different side by side

That was the 2017 silkscreened run. See post #64 above. Sold out. That is not what has been shipping since the playfields came out.

Quoted from DougZ3:

[quoted image]

Great comparison. I see a completely different result.
The new 2019 print is not washed out at all. It's a perfect match to the NOS one we were loaned. An exact copy, really.

Again, everybody forgets there were 18,250 original Playboy backglasses printed, across several vendors. Yours, nor anybody's, is the holy grail.

Not that any of us could, but set 10 randomly selected Playboy original glasses next to each other and do the same comparison.

Now that said, in this particular side-by-side, one could say the original's bushes and grotto water are "washed out" - as the repro has more color. As well as the swimsuits, blue jeans, etc. Seems like eyes are just going to only the skintones. Which is natural I guess. But I can tell you that the difference in fleshtone levels, between these two glasses, is in the mere 2-3% range. Which is easily possible across different original glasses.

You haven't unwrapped your repro yet, so you haven't found out about it's hidden layering. It's a 6-layer print. Light it up, and those fleshtones will deepen down some into balanced perfection. Possibly even more tone than your original when lit. That goes for all the colors holding up.

All that said... I propose a fun challenge. Put each one in the backbox, light it up, and take a picture. Post both pictures. *Don't say which is which* Let the commenting begin on differences. Folks can comment on which one looks better/same/worse than the other, and why, and which they think is which.

Quoted from tomdrum:

No. If it looks oversaturated, and dark - it's the old style. (old web site photos added below - unlit and backlit).

SHOWN BELOW was the previous 2017-2018 silkscreened version, and had to be backlit to hit final intended colors. It was not the optimal outcome (obviously) and was caveated and shown clearly in photos at the site at the time. It served the lost-glass or trashed-glass niche at the time.

Just to be clear, this is NOT the 2019 glass DougZ3 got, and NOT what has shipped since January 2019.

[quoted image]

Just to be clear - I am very happy with it! My "original" was peeling and triple thick coated,

If I did not look at them side by side, I would not have noticed a difference. Are there any other differences? I have no idea as I am not comparing each square inch.

I am sure that it will look great once backlight - I don't have the channel/lift etc to install it to look right now.

I don't want to inadvertently start a bashing thread (I hate those). So I edited my post and changed the wording (and noted it).

CRP - This was my first experience ordering from you. My experience was great. I ordered, I sent a follow up email a few days later, which was responded to the same day, The shipping was quick, the packaging was solid (glass shipments scare me), the playfield is beautiful. the back glass is beautiful, I would absolutely order from you again.

#72 5 years ago

I received my playfield from the latest run. The nicest one so far that I have received from CPR. Really nice plywood and the clear coat is the best I have seen from many CPR titles over the years. Good job all around.

Anyone know a source for the Bally logo lane guides?

I have the brochure for playboy signed by Patti who was working the Bally booth at the '78 AMOA show. Sondra was not there when I was.

Tom Nieman is a marketing genius.

Thanks!

I have an original in the crate playfield for one of my games.

Picked up my 2nd PB and located a backglass for it since the original was missing. I bought one that came out of a vandalized game in 1979 and was sitting in a box in climate controlled storage since. It's near mint. The other was an original that came with my 1st game. Side by side, the differences are obvious although hard to show in the pics. The one on left has pink film on the credit and match windows, never saw another like it. I assume someone added it. The mint one from storage is on the right. The teal bikini on right is a much darker green and overall colors are darker. Thought I share these.
