Hiya, this is my first time posting here and my first time being a pinball owner. I recently came into possession of a bally circus queen pinball cabinet. I would like to fully restore this machine, at least restore its mechanical function. What are some of the first steps I should take with an EM machine? It does run, but has some weird quirks to it right now. The big problem is that the counter never moves up from zero and the game wont pay out any credits. Outside of cleaning I have not done anything to the machine. Any help is greatly appreicated!

Hope you like cleaning stepper units

Bingo's logic is crazy cool.

First: I would check all fuses for correct values.
Second: check to make sure all 8 balls are in the game and sitting in lower cabinet ball trough.
Third: insert coin for start up.
Fourth: make sure ball number one is raised to playfield shooter lane.
Fifth: shoot ball number one through top arch ball gate to close shutter board and lights up numbered hole.
Sixth: make sure ball number two is brought up in shooter lane.
Seventh: checked timer unit in back box to make sure it is operating correctly and stepping up.
Eighth: make sure balls shot and landing in holes are lighting up on back glass card.
Ninth:shoot third ball out and catch with your hand with playfield glass off game and place manually the third ball to line up with three numbers in the back glass card for payout.
Tenth: shoot ball four out into playfield and then check the large trip bank on the lower left of the back door to make sure selector lock (payout) relay pulls in for three in a line payoff of free replays.
Eleventh: shoot fifth ball out and and check timer unit for stepping up and shutting game off.

Alrighty, thanks for the advice. I have already got through steps 1-6 no problem. Step seven is kind of weird. I am not sure what "operating correctly" looks like. What exactly is the timer unit supposed to do and when? It does not seem to do much on our table, it somtimes indexes one spot over, but i'm not sure if it is doing it when it is supposed to or not.

For step 8, some of the lights on the back glass light up, about half of them. I'm pretty sure its just from dead bulbs (waiting on amazon to ship them currently).

For step 9, I have tried something similar, putting the game into a win state, but the score did not go up at all when pressing the R button, but the machine did make a bunch of noise.

Have not checked 10 or 11 yet

the timer unit steps up (rotates the wipers one rivet) every time a ball is raised for at least the first four balls. After that it may not step-up if a ball fell in the return hole.

if your playfield shutter is closing so the balls don't fall thru, then your timer unit is stepping up.

for step 8, often the lamp is ok but the socket is not so good. If you wiggle the lamp and it works, it's the socket. 'course, you need to figure out how to get to the lamps Bad unedited videos can be found here : https://bingo.cdyn.com/video/

if it is the socket, when the lamp is NOT supposed to be lit you can remove the lamp and "hook" the center tab in the socket with a small screwdriver and lever it to bend the tab toward you. Don't be timid, bend the thing at least 45 degrees ... it'll spring back when released. Swirl the lamp base on something hard to remove the divot in the tip and reinsert the lamp. Doing those two things should make the lamp sit pretty firmly in the socket and get rid of flakiness.

if pushing the R button releases the search wipers and you hear the search relays chattering as the wipers spin, then the before 4th selector lock trip relay tripped after you shot the 4th ball. Payout for an inline win is kinda three phases (ignore section wins until you get inline wins working):
1] win enable ... the before 4th selector lock trip relay trips
2] win detect ... the spinning search wipers cause 3+ adjacent search relays to power at the same time and the search index unit powers to stop the wipers on the winning rivets
3] replay cams release and add credits + step up the appropriate replay counter. When enough credits are added, the replay counter cuts off power to the search index unit and the search wipers are released to resume spinning. However, a win won't be detected until the replay cams lock into their home position.

you can release the search wipers from the back by pushing down the lock relay armature plate, then watch the search index unit to see if it's doing anything. Also watch the search relays to see if 3+ adjacent ones power. Easiest thing is set up a 5-in-line win and see if all search relays 1-5 power occasionally as the wipers spin.

Okay, thanks for all the info! I'll take a look at the timer unit when I get a chance. For the lamps, my machine actually has a litlle instruction sheet printed on the inside of it, but the bad unedited videos should still help. For scoring, It seems to make all the appropriate steps and sounds, but just doesnt tick up the counter. The counter kind of 'jiggles', the far right digit jumps half up from zero then jumps back down to zero. The same thing it does when you put a coin in. I will take a closer look at it soon.

P.S. is there a way to reply to someone on this forum? Like, how can I respond directly to a comment someone else made so they get notified?

if ya click on their name on the left side of their message, there's a contact button.

for the replay register that shows the number of credits (the replay counters are different things), manually operate the solenoid/coil plungers with the game power off and make sure the register steps up/down easily.

if you have a win and it seems to pay (the search relays chatter, stop, you hear some thunking and eventually the search relays chatter again), you can verify the replay counter unit in the head for the color win stepped up. If it did, then the issue is just the replay register not adding credits - either it's gunked up or control unit cam 13B switch needs clean/adjust.

even when the replay register is at 000, the game tries to decrement it when a coin/credit is played. In that case jerking of the reels without changing is normal. Incrementing the numbers should be snappy tho ... at least until you hit the stop that determines the max number of credits allowed. Typically 699 or 799 from the factory depending on the game. Sometimes it's possible to relocate the stop or modify it to get the full 999.

It will be best to get yourself a copy of the Manual & Schematic. You can get these from here. http://www.bingo.cdyn.com/machines/bally/circus_queen/
You need both to work on the machine. It will help massively.

This would be the best $40 you could spend. Highly recommended:
